So the ones i'm considering purchasing are: Golflogix, and Greenfinder. I've also seen Intelligolf, but i'm not really considering because it doesn't seem as good as the other two.

So does anyone have either of these? and what can they tell me about them? Are there any other GPS apps I should consider as well?

For clarity, I have a Verizon Blackberry Tour 9630.

I have golflogix and intelligolf, I like some of both if intelligolf had more courses mapped I would probaly stick with them. Golf logix is good a buddy has a skycaddie and we compare a couple times in a round are within a couple yards. I like the desk top of intelligolf and there stats. golflogix has some things they need to improve, such as editting rounds, I like intelligolf spread sheet feel on comparing rounds. The on line looking at rounds is kind of weak as it does not have the break down for courses you played etc. It takes me several times to sync a round. They have some bugs but I am hopeful it will get better.

I have the green finder for my curve. It is lightweight, simple, and to the point. It does everything a range finder should do, and is easy, lightweight, and doesn't eat battery (like golf logix)

I would say demo both, but I much prefer greenfinder

I highly recommend freecaddie - you can download free off the net. The free version gives you distances to the front middle and back of the green. For like 30 bucks a year you get distances to sand traps, hazards, doglegs etc. The best part of it though is that if you play at a course is not mapped you can go onto google earth and map it yourself.

I have tried the following on my BlackBerry Storm:

Greenfinder : all year. This is my choice at this time. Does everything its supposed to well. However, it doesn't have some courses that I have played.

Golflogix : 1 round. The software looks nice but is still kind of clunky. I pulled my phone out of the holster several times to get a yardage and found I was a club off only to realize that the yardage updating is very slow. Buttons are too small to really make a single press do what your want. Scorekeeping looks like more of an afterthought than being well integrated. That said, I think this one is the one to watch as they make improvements.

nRange : several rounds. Very good customer support in adding courses. They even added courses that Greenfinder refused because their imagery was high quality enough. The google maps integration to look at the course imagery while playing is clunky and slow and of questionable use, IMO.

For me, battery drain was acceptable for each. YMMV.

My dilemna is that I love oobgolf for stat tracking. None of the above integrate so I carry two devices when I play (my Storm and my ipod touch). The ipod touch uses golfcard (excellent scorekeeper) and uploads to oobgolf.

Hope I have a better set of choices for next year...

I've downloaded a couple of the GPS range finders on my Storm with Verizon, but couldn't get the GPS to work. Anyone know how to get around it as Verizon likes to lock up the GPS setting?

If its like the Tour, go to options > advanced options > gps > and change gps services from e911 only to location on and location aiding to enabled.

Freecaddie looks interesting. Do the other apps let you map out a course yourself as well?

I used the free trial of Golf Logix & Green finder today during the same round.

Used mostly Golf Logix and found it easy to use. The display is very nice, but lacks some detail such as location of hazards (left or right), the same goes for the doglegs. It just tells you that it's out there, but to what side....You have to rely on the course card to prperly identify the locatin of these. I did like the fact that it provides additional information aside from just hazards. It shows 100 yd, 150 yd layoups, which can help when making up your strategy for the hole.

Score keeping could be better, as it asks to be entered after the holes is played, which is not a deal breaker, but it could be integrated into play. A benefit of this is that you don't have mess the unit until the end of the hole promoting timely play.

Few things that I think need to be improved are:
1) Ability to slect marker of play. This is vital for statistics and handicap.
2) When you get within 10 yrds from the green, it does not provide detail, it just states <30 Yrds.
3) Better description of location of hazards (left or right or center)
4) Possibly better integration of scorecard.

As for Green Finder, I think is nice and simple, but it does not keep any statistic or score, something I expect to have especially in smart phone unit. The user interface also needs to be improved....it looks like some thing out of a graphing calculator from the 80's, and not what you would expect today.

AS for accuracy, both were pretty close within 1 or maybe 2 yards from each other, except when you are on the green, it still continues to to provide the distance to the edges. Green Finder also provides the location og hazards (left, right, etc)

I did not use Intelly golf today, but I have played with the score capturing features, and it makes perfect sence, and its very simple to use. My experience is that the imagery take some time to load.

Palyed a little with nRange, but my free trial expired prior to taking it to the course. They use google imagery for mapping the course, and nice but heavy and requires to have additional memorey otherwise it weighs down the phone.

Overall I liked both Green Finder and Golf Logix, but not sure which one to buy, both are not quite there (for me), but both are a great alternative to a $200 or $400 unit... These aps were the maine reaso fro getting a phone with GPS.

Correction, I realized that the left, right center location of hazards was due to the mapping and not the capabilities of the system. I just mapped a course close to my house (walking distance) and provided the right descriptions. not to mention that by scrolling own I could see more detail (who knew ???)
I believe that the GolfLogix is by far the best software (for me anyway) for the smartphones

UPDATE....

So I went ahead and bought GolfLogix GPS for BB. I was sold on the scorekeeping and statistics capability that others seem to lack. The user interface is great and easy to use. I found myself not hesitating on my club selection once I read the distance. I have to say that the markers on the course were off, but i paid attention to the Golf Logix distances and it paid off. I have certain clubs pretty much figured out... my 6i is 165yrds, my 7i is about 140...... And while the course was telling me 175 the green, the gps was telling me 142...took out my 7i, I got on green with about 3yds from center.

Pros:

-Easy to use
-Keeps score and trend statistics for every round
-Does not eat up your battery. (played 14 holes and only lost 20% batt..I took calls and messages...)
-interface is superior than others...
-All scores are avaialbe on line and on the device.

Cons:

-All scores are recoreded....you cannot delete a " round" from the tally. I have a single hole scored playing around, and cannot get rid of it.
- Had a snag with my distances...I recorded several distances with clud detail, but could not find it online.
- Cannot edit course, or atleast I have not found a way.
- BB "back or escape" button does not work.. Always tryies to exit app.

These are a few thoughts. will post more as I use it more.

Ok Update #2.....

I played again yesterday....and I can say that I am very pleased with the purchase. What I realized is that the system is very personalized, and intended for a single user at a time. It does not really allow you tell you buddies their distance to green if you are measuring your tee shot.....there is no way of "marking" the starting point. Nor does it allow you to track your buddy's score either.

Scorecard is very nice, and plenty of statistics at the end of the game.

At this point I have tried GolfLogix, Green Finder, nRange, AccelGolf Scorecard and here are my thoughts:

Green Finder : This would have been my other option. The biggest con is the lack of a scorecard. Actually this was what deterred me from purchasing. Cost $35 Screenshots

nRange : Nice enough...it provides front, center and back of green distances, but you have to google images for all other hazards. While this is nice enough it does slow down play. I ususaly use the scorecard form the course for these overviews. It also does not have a scorecard. Cost $30 Screenshots

AccelGolf : This has the best scorecard (allows up to 4 players and you can add them your address book), but it lacks in mapped courses. You can measure your own course, or map on the fly, similar to nRange, but i found that the accuracy was way off...it palced my 22 yards from my actual location 3 times in a row. There the biggest selling point (and it FREE ) is the scorecard and statistics it covers online....it really is pretty nice. Screenshots
It's the indian, not the arrow! But it sure is nice to have good arrows!!!!!

  • 1 year later...

Hi folks! New to this board, and have seen some good Q&A; topics in this forum. My question is for Blackberry phone users. I have a 9300 model, and have downloaded the GreenFinder trial version to it. It seems to be ok, but the overview of each hole leaves a little to be desired. I was just wondering if there were any other GPS apps that were better before I spend the money on this one.

Thanks

I have a Bold and have used a few freebies so far. BBGPS, Swing By Swing and currently using the iGolf free version. BBGPS is a low tech yardage app. it works and is simple to enter courses on their website. (they all use a google earth type interface) Swing by Swing is a bit more detailed with hole overview, etc, but the free app lacked the distance tracker part for getting tee shot distances- or at least was difficult to find if it had it. I also had trouble with it hanging up in the middle of a round requiring a full restart of the phone. the iGolf has an interface between the two others. It offers distances to hazards or carry distance, simple distance tracker and scorecard. Pretty well rounded for a free app. paid version has a stat tracker, club suggestions, etc...
