My dad never plays. He might play once a year at a charity tournament for my family. He's not great, but if he played he could probably be decent. The only clubs he has are clubs that he found in a high school closet back when he was 18.

my dad was an incredibly good golfer (top 10 in state amateur several times) who never had time to practice because of work and family obligations.

My father was an avid golfer, playing much more than twice a month. I wouldn't however consider him a "rabid golf nut."

He certainly instilled in me the love for the game.

I guess I could have added another level: Mildy foamy at the mouth golf enthusiast. Next time: more poll options!

My Dad golfed but I wouldn't say he got me into the game. I took up the sport with a friend when I was 12. We would get a junior pass for the city courses and golf away our summer holidays. When we were not golfing we were walking through the bushes at a nearby private course looking for golf balls. We would then sell them back to the golfers for a $1 a piece.

In a way, my Dad got me out of the game so to speak. I was really starting to enjoy the rounds I spent with my dad when I was in my later teens. Except for the constant ribbing and trash talk (which he knew would rattle me) they are some very cherished memories. I say memories because I lost my dad when I was 18yrs old due to cancer and seemed to stop golfing. Through the years, I would only pick up the clubs once or twice and drifted away from the game until recently.

This year I realized that it is a game that absolutely love to play and wondered why I stopped playing. I am as excited to golf as I was when I was a teenager. I even went back to that private course and wandered the bushes which brought back a flood of great childhood memories.

I am heading to Phoenix for my 40th birthday in two weeks and I know that I will be thinking of my father, especially if I slice it hard in to the desert as he often did.

Don't know anyone in my family who played golf before I did. My brother and I both play, but neither of us have kids so the legacy was born with us and at the moment it looks like it dies with us. My brother has a couple of step grand children, so maybe he passes it on to them by association.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

This is an interesting poll. Neither my dad or my stepdad golfed really. My stepfather did have a 20 year old set of clubs in storage that I stole when I started playing. I played with the 20 year old golden bear blades until the head snapped off the four iron on a tee shot.

I always joke that I have two dads and I've never golfed with either one. Thats terrible!

dad was pretty good until he got sick and quit since he couldnt play to his standards... from what i hear from my uncles he was a high single digit to low teens hcp...
one brother is a longballing strong 3hcp and the other is a mid teens hcp who'd probably be much better if he played/practiced more... my nephew(3hcp's son) is in preschool and has a great looking swing

We still have the trophy he won with his Dad from the 50's from a father-son tournament at their club. So for me it goes back at least 2 generations. Once my Dad retired he played 8 days a week when the weather was good.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

My dad started playing in his 20's, became a goo player in his 30's and has been a 7-10 handicap as long as I can remember. He's 71 now, and still plays from the mens tees, and drives the ball about 230-250 pretty consistently. Plenty long with the irons as well.
His index today is 6.7. Lives on a course in the San Diego area. I wish I lived closer so we could play more often together, we really have fun and are good golf buddies now.....what a change from those teenage years.....

My grandmother (dad's mom) played a lot. She was good.

My dad played in high school, but was not as good as she was.

Without me dragging him out there a few times a year - my dad's in the once a year maybe group.

My mom's dad played a little - mostly late in his life.

My mom plays 20 times a year.

My dad picked up golf in his late twenties. He's a very avid golfer playing 2-3 times per weeks. He's also very good. All though I started playing at a very young age, I really didn't get into it until my early thirties. My grandfather on my mother's side was a very avid golfer and also very good.
