I've done this for the past couple years with a group of buddies. It benefits the local Boys & Girls club and is a lot of fun. The format is fivesomes: better ball.

The first time I chose 5 wood and did pretty well. I had length off the tee, and I was able to chip and putt remarkably well with it. The second time, I went with a 3 hybrid and that wasn't so good for some reason... I'm thinking a 6 iron this time. I'll give up some distance off the tee, but will have more loft for shots closer to the green. I'll practice putting with it for the next few weeks.

Any of you done this format? What club did you choose? What was your strategy?

7 iron seems a popular choice in past years.

We used to play a 3 club scramble at a short course in high school. I would use my driver, 7 iron and Sand wedge, putting with the sand wedge. Funny how well you can actually play sometimes with limited options. If I had to use just one club, I'd probably go with a 6 iron. Can get plenty of distance with it and could probably hood the face enough to get somewhat of a straight roll going on the green. Probably ok practice for your touch too.

I played in one of these years ago and I used a 7 wood. It was played at a local course I'd played several times and I knew the yardages. It worked out well for me but no matter how well you play you always will get near impossible shots.
Driver: i15, 3 wood: G10, Hybrid: Nickent 4dx, Irons: Ping s57, Wedges: Mizuno MPT 52, 56, 60, Putter: XG #9

I played in a 2 club scramble about 15 years ago, and had a blast. The 2nd club had to be your putter though. Being a scramble, we each picked our clubs as a group, to make sure that we had most areas covered. I think we had a 3 wood, 5 iron, 7 iron, and a gap wedge in the group. It was one of the most fun rounds of golf I've ever had. Definately lots of laughs within the group, watching someone try to pitch over a sandtrap with a 3 wood.

As you said, 7-iron is a popular choice, and for a good reason. I can hit mine 170 yds. For long par 4's that is two shots plus a chip. For most par 5's, it is just 3 shots. And for par 3's, I can reach most without any problem. Also with 7 iron, it is better than 5 wood from a bunker.

Unless the course is long, I always pick a 7 iron for such a format.

3-Hybrid for me.
I can hit it far andI can putt better with it than my normal putter (but I get a lot of strange looks so don't use it)
Only prob would be shots from 60-100 yards out.

I have played 2 club tourneys with a driver and a 56* wedge... putting with the driver just using it like a long putter was pretty easy getting used to but I got beat like a drum that day

Seems like you would be pretty screwed if you put it in the trap and only had a 5 wood. Definitely sounds like the best idea is somewhere between 5-7 iron, depending on how far you hit them, and what the longest par 3 is on that course.

I'm playing Saturday in one; used a 7 iron years ago. I'll probably use a 5 this time but what should the strategy be for the other 3? Should we play for the drive, 2nd shot, chip and putt? That would mean one choose a long club, another middle iron, another a chipping/pitching club and the last a putter? With everyone trying to hit every shot, that would certainly limit their success as the clubs get shorter. The long guy might do well on the drive but won't be as effective on the putts. The putting guy would never get to drive and so on. Almost seems better for everyone to take a middle of the road club and just play the best we can.

Ive heard of 3 club tourneys, i instructor plays in one every year. But 1 club fivesomes sounds like a riot..lol.

      Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
