Forged Irons Life Expectancy?

I just bought a set of beautiful brand new Mizuno MP57 irons. I am basically wondering how long they (forged) will last compared to a 'regular' club? I average about 36 holes a week and live in Maine so it's a shorter season. I'm not a club ho' and play an iron for a long time.....my last irons lasted me 12 years...and still have life left in them.....

Anybody have some thoughts on this?

If you take care of them, a long, long time.

But if you like shiny things, a couple of years.

Depends more on how many balls you hit on the range, my mizuno's are going fine and don't think they wear as badly as people say.

I bought an ex demo 6i that I use to hit balls with, it has hit alot of balls, easily over 2000 on a grass range that has really harsh dirt. The face is pretty worn and doesnt look good but I dont think there would be any problems with using it for a competition round.

Any slight extra wear on the clubface is worth the feeling of hitting a flush shot with a forged club, especially a mizuno.

damn i have a few sets of wilson forged blades from the 60's that i could still poke today. Not saying that they make clubs like they used to back then, but your clubs should last you a long time if you take care of them!

Cast vs. Forged: Two different clubsmiths told me that people who play forged should have the loft and lie checked at the end of each season. Being that forged clubs have somewhat softer metal, they are more likely to get bend slightly from bag wear or hits on hard ground.

More of a case of keeping calibration, not durability.

My 8-iron head is getting to the point where I'm contemplating replacing it, as is the 51° wedge. The wedges I should replace. I've had this set for about two years, but I hit a ton at the range, and I use my 8-iron above all others (with the gap wedge at second place) at the range. Maybe I should find a camera and post pictures so you can see what I mean.

Just depends. Like many have said, if you like shiny things, not too long. However, if you play on hard ground, have the lie and loft angle checked every so often. My S57's aren't forged, and some courses down here are pretty hard and I have no problems with them. However working at a golf course with access to the lie/loft machines is a personal plus.

I played forged wedges and notice the greatest wear when I practice chipping and the face has some dirt and you continue to hit balls and it leaves wear marks from ball to dirt contact on the face. If you also use the iron covers along with wiping the face after each shot, the irons should last you for many years, my guess would be at least 5 - 10 years of enjoyment and low scores.

just make SURE you use iron covers ... especially if you ride carts. all that bangin' around on bumps will bang up your clubs. if you clean your clubs after every round and keep covers on them, they'll last a long time.... also store them indoors, especially during winter if you're in a cold area.

+1 I too noticed the most wear when practicing my chipping and wedge shots. I played my old TA3's for a good solid 4 - 5 years before I really noticed any significant wear on the faces. I still played them for another 3+ years after that, so it wasn't that bad. The PW,9 and 8 irons were the first to go south. The rest of the irons were pretty well A-OK.

You folks either practice a helluva a lot, or you have really high standards. I've had 18 good years out of my Mizunos, and thanks to my new groove sharpener, I hope to get at least another decade out of them (keeping in mind that I do rotate them with a couple other sets).

PS. If you think you need iron covers to maintain the playability and appearance of your new set of forged irons, you probably shoulda bought the PINGs.

Thanks for the advice guys! I heard that using iron covers were actually bad for forged clubs as they trap moisture in and promote rust?

hehe .. that's silly. if you don't use covers on your forged irons and you ride in carts, your clubs will get beat up and look much older than the really are, real fast. my clubs, after 1 season or 5, still look brand new, minus a few scratches from the harder dirt, sticks or whatever else I may be swinging on.

my irons looks like i beat trees with them everyday..lol. As long as they work thats good enough for me. But as far as playabillity, i know guys that have used the same forged irons for over 10 years. My friend tommy has had to replace the PW and 9i but he has generally been using the same set of titliest 690's forever.

you can always have the clubs reconditioned...regrooved...chromed..etc after a few seasons...sucks that they're so soft..but they feel freakin unbelievable whenever you hit your shots...
DEFINITELY do the loft and lie adjustment at the end of the season...mine have shifted as much as 2 degrees in a single season... there's a bunch of places online that take about a month to recondition your clubs.....

I don't own forged irons personally, but my friend has some Mizuno MP67s. He doesn't take much care of them - he's a bit of a 'club ho' :D
They look really scrappy because he doesn't use iron covers , not because he hits loads of golf balls. The bag clatter that i see on his clubs puts me off ever getting a forged iron.

I see a lot of comments about bag clatter and how it makes forged irons look. I haven't used iron covers since about two months after getting my starter set SGIs, which includes the two years I've owned my MP-57s. I doubt the bag clatter affects playability, but I also suspect I'm one of few people who thinks bag clatter gives the irons character.
