I've always wondered if the caddy would beat the golfer on his own game. The Golfer can play very well, but always seem to rely on a caddy for tips or advice on what iron to use or even reading the green which is the most important part of the game. Give me your input and lets see what you all say.

Pretty simple, if the caddy could shoot 5 under par at Pga events they would have their own caddy. Dig?

If the caddy could beat the golfer then they wouldn't be the caddy. Now I'm sure there are some really good playing caddies out there but there is a reason the players are the ones making the big bucks.

EDIT: Elsfan beat me too it

I thought caddies were there to take some of the thought process out of the players mind. They will let the player know (as an example), "its 130 to carry the bunker, 146 to the middle and the pin is 160". Now the player has the option to hit any shot that they feel suits the situation, because as we all know the good players have many shots from ~150yrds. It just makes the shot that much easier for the player to hit when all the variables are laid out for them, it allows them to focus on the swing they must make.

Waiting for summer...

The golfer... They may rely on the caddy but that doesn't mean they can't figure out what to hit, etc on their own. There's a reason the golfer is the golfer and the caddy is, uhhh, not. And you're assuming the caddy is a near scratch player.

Are we talking about professional golfers, greensfee players at Bandon Dunes, or junior girls with their dad on the bag?

the caddy's job is to familiarize themselves with the course and give guidance to the golfer based on what they know about the course.

doesn't mean they have the skills to get the ball where they want it to go.

It is pretty much accepted that caddies are better players than the players they caddy for. This is why they are prepared to work for 10% of what the player earns. All caddies hit the ball longer and straighter than their player and, without exception, have amazing short games. What sets them apart, though, is their understanding of course management and ability to choose the correct club. A few years ago they started the RC Cola Tour (Reverse Caddy) and the scoring averages of the caddies was so much lower than the players' that, the players boycotted the events after the RC British Open.

So, yes, the caddies are superior players in each and every respect. It has always been so, but some of the players won't admit it. I think Davis Love III and Padraig Harrington get particularly tetch when the subject is brought up. I know for a fact that Steve Williams was a MUCH better player than Greg Norman when he caddied for him, but he is possibly the only caddy who is not considerably better than his current player, Tiger Woods.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

In the pro tours the player is always better. When I caddy, it's usually me that's better.

Like the others have said, if the caddy were such a great player they wouldnt be a caddie.

Players play the game. Caddies know the game. It is like Vin Scully with the Dodgers. He has never played pro ball, but he know more about baseball than the players do.

Caddies are there to carry the bag, support and advice the player. Give the player a yardage book and I'm shure he would be able to connect the dots and pick the right club.

    • It's been a little more than a year since I can last remember hitting golf balls and today I just got my second cortisone injection in 11 months. I thought maybe shortly after the first injection I was going to be able to start playing again with therapy but the pain while doing my backswing past halfway just didn't subside like just lifting my hands up in the air did. So today the Orthopedic surgeon put more in the backside of the shoulder than before to address the tendon more. I'm going to try therapy for another 3 months and if I  can't swing the club without pain then I think surgery is going to be my next option.
    • I was just down visiting family in southern California and we played a couple rounds of golf. I hit my ball into the deep rough near some tree's and my cousin's husband offered me his Sim 2 Rescue Hybrid to try out. And I felt the same way, wow! I loved it, it also had a Pure DTX grip on it which I loved. As soon as I got back home, I ended up buying two used Calloway Rogue X hybrids, 3 and 5. So far I've only tested them out at the range, but I love them. They're much more forgiving than irons for me.
