I'm sixteen years old and have completely self taught myself the game of golf up until now. Over the last weekend, I finally broke down and got my first coaching sessions with a club pro. I just wish I did it sooner! I was a decent player beforehand, but I really think this guy is going to bring me over the top. Ball-striking has never seemed so effortless. Any of you self-taught? Experiences with great coaches? Etc?

Yup, I am self taught, been playing for a year now and once I break 80 ( should be soon, consistently in the low 80's now ) I am going to go get some lessons.

One thing that can be bad about self taught is the possibility of developing some bad habits that are harder to correct. However if someone which is seems like all of you are open to lessons at some time I dont see a problem with self teaching. Can only help. I started golfing with a 4 piece set and once my parents knew I wanted to stick with it I got a set of 10 lessons and that was close t 8 years ago and thats all Ive had. Im close to 80 now shooting a 39 yesterday on 9 and when i can gather enough cash I am getting some lessons from a pro I met yesterday. We hit it off pretty good and im gonna give him a shot.

Same here. I keep intending to get lessons but never seem to get around to clearing my schedule. I'm absolutely positive that it would have a positive effect on my game and get me to a single digit index.

Worst part about being self taught is the lack of an objective mechanical base to fall back on when your swing gets a little off.

never have had a lesson. I dont have the time to really practice or remake my game. I know that if I get lessons, I will need to spend alot of time rebuilding my swing. Not willing to invest that time with 3 yound active boys at home.

I have learnt all i know from watching instruction videos on GOLF.com, YOUTUBE, and from my friend who is really into swing mechanics. I would love to say when i get down to single digits that i have never had a lesson, but most likely i will have a lesson between now and then. It is difficult to pick yourself back up from a string of poor shots if you are not working on something specific to help keep your mind off a crumbling round.

I am self taught from books and magazines. I was able to get close to a single at one point, hit a plateau and then gave up the game completely for a number of years.

When I was younger, the cost of seeking a solid instructor seemed too high. For $50/60 per half hour, you're really just doing an "interview" to see if you can fit with a given instructor. After that, I would think you need a number of lessons to work on a few different things.

No, I copied what I saw on TV, then I copied what I saw from good players in person. They helped me a bit too.

I'm self taught so far, with exception of daily tips that I get via email, which I remember and apply to my game. I also do as others, meaning that I watch the pros and try to apply what I see to my own game. I might spring for lessons one day, but for now, I'll keep on the track I'm on.

Self taught up until about a year or so ago. I was already a good player sorta (could shoot low 80s and even into the 70s every once in a while), but I could never break 100 in any tournament that I played in. So I worked with a pro at my home course for a little while and he outlined the major flaws in my swing and we worked on those. Now that I have a semi-ok swing, I'm back to being self-taught. I've researched a lot about the golf swing and know enough to figure out what I'm doing wrong and how I can fix it myself. He now knows that I don't want any lessons or advice anymore, as it will just mess up my swing further. I'm tieing or beating him on the course so I can't complain (about scratch).

I'm the most stubborn person you will meet in your life, which is why I prefer to be self taught. I stuck with the guy for a while because I knew that unless I went to him, I wasn't going to get any better. It was tough to work with him because any changes in your swing will take a little while to get used to, and I wanted immediate results. Plus, I know enough about my swing to make the subtle changes that I need day-to-day to keep it consistent.

To end a long-ass post, I'm mostly self taught.

Completely self taught, when i was in the navy a buddy of mine was a golf freak of nature and noticed small things i should correct in my swing.

But other than that no real lesson, even when i played high school golf, so about 10 years of golf no lessons, and a very long arcing swing for good distance from the tee.

I am self taught as well. I have contemplated many times getting lessons, but after a talk with a family friend who was a teaching pro for years have decided against it. I mentioned it to him a couple of years ago when I played a round with him at his course in Myrtle Beach and he asked what I wanted from my game. I told him I wanted to shoot par. He asked me if i had a job. I replied yes. He asked me if I had kids. I said yes. He told me to forget about getting lessons. He went on to tell me that when he was playing tour events, his 40 hour a week job was hitting golf balls. He told me unless i had time to put in hours of work weekly, the lessons would be a waste of money. After the round, in which i shot 83, he asked me did i have fun. I said yes. He said that is all that matters.

When i first started, i had a couple friends help me to learn the basic and eventually i developed my own swing that feels natural, though im sure flawed but I play well enough to enjoy the game most of the time. Ive thought about gettting lessons, just not many instructors in my area, most of the courses dont really have a teaching pro, its a rural area in southern il. Like when i looked up where i could go to get a free lesson for free lesson month, closest participating course was about 40 miles away. Prob at least half around here dont even have a driving range and I would think you would need a driving range to take a lesson, thats where most instruction would occur and of course a putting green for putting and chipping. One reason I havent attempted to take lessons is that im not sure i would be a good student, i know some things im doing wrong and just cant seem to physically stop doing them so im sure a teaching pro would get frustrated working with me. Ive recently been working on keeping my head down and not dropping my right shoulder, 2 things a friend pointed out and showed me as he videotaped my swing on his phone. He's a much better player than me so I take his tips seriously, if he played and practiced as often as i would he would probably be a single digit handicapper, but he never gets to practice and only plays maybe once a week if that because hes busy with work and 3 young children at home, probably plays to about a 15-16 or so normally.

Im completely self-taught. Other than reading some golf tips in the magazines, I havent had any lessons. Lately Ive been thinking about getting some lessons. I feel like theres a point where Im going to get as good as I can on my own and will need some lessons in order to continue to get better.

    • Day 133 (25 Apr 24) - Worked with the Divot Board today added a piece of cardboad behind the ball to help reinforce ball first contact. Contact improved through the round.   Added grandson's football goal posts about 10yds out to add a good start line visual Good session today.
    • Day 120: 4/25/24 Full Speed Spectrum training session. Low energy today and my speed was lower than normal. Will see what I can do on Saturday.
    • Day 541, April 25, 2024 Ten minutes after lessons. Still not caught up, but should be by tomorrow evening.
    • Playing irons only may lead to some short-term gains, but you'll want to at least practice with the driver if you ultimately have some decently good goals.
    • He plays from 68.3 / 124.  A combo tee setup of normal mens and seniors.   I play from 69.7/127.   He left after taking a triple on 14 and then leaving.  Which plays to what I think his plan is,   He doesn’t stroke on 14 but would have to take bogey for non completed holes on the way in.   Maybe that’s giving him too much credit, but he found a way to add 4 shots to his score over three holes so….     I looked up his last 20 rounds in GHIN and he has a lot of rounds at easier courses (rating and slope) that are higher than his normal rounds at home.   Since I mostly have his front nine score during the match (36) to go on, he has three nine hole scores at our course posted that are 41-43. I wrote the whole thing up to the head of our golf association who runs all the tournaments.  Our pro is not involved officially in the tournaments because the golf associations are separate from the club.   He’s pretty well known for this, however I was pretty shocked at how well he played carrying a 15.   I think eventually they will do something, a lot of people have complained.  The golf association threw someone out a couple of years ago and it was a three month situation where the guy retaliated.  They probably are hesitant to go thru anything like that again.  That is a rather crazy story I might post about later.
