I'm in the middle of my bag transformation and recently switched from Callaway irons to Titleist irons and Im glad i did. I am also without a driver right now so I was wondering, how do the Titleist drivers compare? I'm looking for a driver with a traditional shaped head and dont mind the smaller sizes. I am looking for something somewhat forgiving with good distance. Just looking for some input. The way I'm going I could have a completely new bag by next summer. I plan on picking up some vokey wedges over the winter, so it could be possible that I go from an all Callaway bag to an all Titleist bag. With the exception of my fairway metals, I am in love with them and they will never leave my bag.

when you look at drivers, there really isn't one driver thats easier than the other. with the technology these days, most drivers hit very similar. They'll all have different feels of course (which is where you demo'ing them out comes in) but for the most part, one driver isn't going to be more forgiving and give you more distance.

With that said, I've hit the Titleist 909D3 and D2 before and they are both excellent drivers...but then again my Ping G10 is much cheaper and is also an excellent driver as well.

What Titleist irons did you get? It might be time to update your signature for the better
In terms of drivers, I game the Titleist 909 D2 and for my game it's the best driver out there. In picking this one I tried a few drivers. I tried the Callaway FT-9 Tour and the new FT Tour, TaylorMade R9 and R9 SuperTri, Ping I15 (just as good as my Titleist) and the Nike VR Tour Str8 Fit. I tried some of them with Trackman and the Titleist and Ping had the best launch conditions and spin rate. The Ping was longer on average by a couple of yards but had a slightly greater dispersion. Although all drivers were great, it was between the I15 and the 909 D2 (I had been gaming a friends' 909D2 for a couple of months as he was sidelined from golf) and managed to get the Titleist for cheaper with an aftermarket Matrix Ozik X-Conn 6. (Sorry for the introduction that might have been unnecessary, but now that I wrote it I'll include it).
Now that I've been gaming it for a while, I find that it's a very good driver. Fairly forgiving (although a mishit looks and feel like a mishit) but it's great when caught on the sweetspot. The open face also helps to mitigate a few aggressive drives that would turn out as hookes with a GI driver (more offset or neutral/closed face). I'm pretty happy with my purchase but it took me a while to adjust to it. In my first few rounds, my fairway hit went from 75/80% to below 50% but now they're back on the right track.

Didn't say if you wanted a new-era driver or not, so I'll suggest some Callaways from the recent past.

If you like your X fairway woods, you might consider an FT5 or FT9 driver. I've seen some FT5s that were refurbed. Hyper-X standard and Tour drivers are also worth looking at, some never-hit stuff still available. The Tour version has a square rather than a closed face, and a midkick stock staft.

Not sure what shaft flex you use.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I actually just sold my FT5. I did like that driver, I was just looking to upgrade. I plan on demoing alot of clubs. Some being the FT9 and FT Tour, along with maybe the Cobra S2 cause it looks intriguing. I just like my new irons so much that I cant help but want to put a Titleist Driver in the bag as well. My shaft flex although I'll have it checked again before buying is Regular.

Thanks for all the input, lets keep it coming!

The 909 D3 isnt the most forgiving driver out there, TBH. Its a great club, but i found that you really have to have a grooved swing to maximize it. Its a real shotmakers club, and i don't work the ball off the tee. So the purpose of the club was lost on me. I switched away from the D3 and now i use a 909 D2, which is a little more user-friendly.

Im gaming the 909d comp. It's probably the most forgiving Titleist I've ever hit. I'm still getting used to it, but have enjoyed the results so far. My carry yardage is farther than any other driver I've owned. And I"ve had a bunch. LOL

Titleist drivers are fantasic! It sounds like you are looking for the Titleist Dcomp or the D2. I play the D3 but it is much less forgiving but it allows me to work the ball much better, I also think the D3 has much better feel!

I share the opinion of CrazyXGolfer and radcochran, the D2 or Comp should fit the bill. I am a huge fan of the 909 D2, i'm just not a fan of the price!!!! If I could afford it it would be in my bag. When I was looking for a driver in Jan, I took a close look at this driver and get very nice results with it, but with the face being 0.5 degrees open, a mishit slice can get very ugly!!!!

With that said, TM drivers are great. Granted they come out with new drivers quicker than anyone else, but for us consumers that is a good thing.
It's the indian, not the arrow! But it sure is nice to have good arrows!!!!!

If you want to go back aways, the old Titlesist 975D is one of the finest titanium drivers the company's ever produced. You should be able to snag a good one for under $50.

905R Was great too! I played one for two years. Thats a remarkable feat for me. It's incredible out of the center. You just don't get away with misses very much.

I've had a 983K for many years and like it fine, but am considering going to a 907 or 909 model. Has anyone done this and then had to switch back because the new ones didn't work as well?

I never was a big fan of the like bean can uggly drivers Callaway produced over many years and I was more in to the serious stuff like the TM R9, Ping i15, Titleist 909 D2 and D3 ....... of course if you hit any of these really solid, they go a mile ..... but we're not talking about forgiving drivers.

Recently I bought my very first Callaway driver, the FT-iZ Tour which is a long as the above, but you still find the fairway if you are a bit off center.

Driving and finding the fairway at let's say 250 - 275 is more important than bombing 300+ off the fairway.

I guess Il throw in my input. Ive hit many drivers including the Titleist 909 ones. For some reason the ball does not come off the clubface hot for me with the 909 comp or 909d2. Feels like I loose some distance with it compared to other drivers Ive hit. Tons of people love them though so you should definetly demo them. I will say this as well, I absolutly love the Titleist 909 3 wood and hybrids, to me there isnt a better club in the 2010 lineup that beats those two in their categories, its just the driver that doesnt do it for me.

So if I were you I would go to a local golf shop and narrow down your choices to a few and ask if you could take their demos to the range for a few hours. They always are glad to let you.

I played with a borrowed set yesterday that included a 909 D2 driver. I won't say how far the ball was going so as to not upset certain people here, but I will say I liked the club a lot.

    • I'm not doing this for the hundred and twentieth time. Sorry in advance, but you get the massively abridged version. Those guys also benefited from the weaker/shallower fields. Also, Watson's career doesn't overlap with Jack's like many think it did. Tom is nearly a decade younger. Jack won only like four majors only after Tom won his first. And Tom won more British Opens than he did all three of the other majors combined, as it was his specialty (not Jack's). Arnie's career similarly doesn't overlap Jack's as much as many think.   Jack would also tell you Tiger was the better golfer.
    • Weaker depth of fields for sure. Some of the top level guys with Jack were pretty awesome. Tom Watson had the lead on the 72nd hole of the 2009 British Open, an event where Tiger missed the cut. Old Tom was almost 60 years old. Jack himself at age 58 finished Top 10 at The 1998 Masters and scored better than Tiger, who won The Masters by 12 shots just a year before that.   The success of both Tom & Jack in older age gives some hope that maybe Tiger can find the magic again at some point. He’s still trying to figure out how to build the stamina for 72 holes after the leg injury. I would love to see him jump on the leaderboard in the coming years. I know a lot of people have given up on him at this point, but that was also true from 2014 to 2017 with the back injuries. He had a hell of a resurgence in 2018 & 2019. Would be fun to see it again.
    • Perceptive rules question by caddie unlocks Tour pro’s ‘dead zone’ relief A perceptive rules question by Xander Schauffele’s caddie, Austin Kaiser, unlocked “dead zone” relief during the Wells Fargo Championship.
    • I ran across an interesting new clip, Johnson Wagner went into that spot with the Referee who allowed the relief.  Apparently there was a perfectly reasonable shot to be made, as Johnson clearly demonstrated, so relief from the TIO was perfectly appropriate.
