Beginner wondering what best clubs to practice with are?

Okay I am a complete beginner that just started playing about 2 weeks ago. I have been going to the driving range a lot and have been reading Ben Hogans Five Lessons (Has been helping me a lot)

I know the right answer to this question is probably "all of them" but I am just trying to establish my swing right now. What do you guys think would be the best club to do this with?

Driver. 7iron. Putter.

I like hitting a mid iron, like 7-5. I usually go with the 6i when I'm working on my swing. I've also been hitting my 4 iron a lot, which is my lowest iron. Helped a lot in getting familiar with it and hitting the longer irons better.

I got a 3 and 4 hybrid instead of irons. The few times I have hit them I really liked them so I think I am probably going to stick with them. I am even having trouble with the 5 iron though, I can hit my 6 iron 150-160 when I get a good swing on it but it seems like I can never get my 5 iron past 150. It was really starting to frustrate me so I decided I should just stick with the 6-7 for a while until I can get a better swing down.

Instructor had me start out with 7i, then after I hit that consistently 9i, then 5i, 5w, 3w, driver. No putting lessons yet. 7i is the core iron, whenever my swing goes bad, we go back to the 7i to fix it.

Lately ive been doing this dont call me a dork lol.

Id hit like 10-15 drives 10-15 long irons(4-5) 10 mid irons(6-7-8) 10 chipshots. Doesnt matter which you use I practice my 8i alot because I hit it about 155-165 so thats a common distance and I can expect to make that shot alot.

Then ill pick the furthest away flag on the range 300yds out + 50 uphill. I hit a drive if I hit a good drive say 250 ill grab my wedge and aim for the 50 yard flag until I get it close. If I duff the drive ill grab a long iron and smack it out there and ill keep score of strokes from drive to acceptable chipshot. That way you get to work on everything in an order that mimicks actually being on the course.

How often do you go to an instructor? I was thinking about getting a few lessons but I cant really afford more then a few.

My plan was to read this book get my swing as good as I possibly can and then go take a few lessons.

I purchased a package deal of 5 lessons for $195, today was the 4th, and have been doing one per week. I'll probably purchase another 5, but space them out every two weeks so I have more time to practice as at this point my swing mechanics are okay, and it's a matter of putting the time in on practice.

IMO Better to learn to play for about a year or two on your own and get some good experience in before lessons. Lessons arent cheap and you learned how to play Basketball without somebody teaching you every motion of the shot just put it through the hoop same with hockey or football get the puck/ball into that thing and you win. Golf is the same learn to love it then youll enjoy learning to play it more.

Thats just my opinion though 3years of golfing no lessons I beat all my friends now that played on the highschool golf team old guys golfing for 40years etc...

I've been doing the same thing last 10 days, it's not the same as being on a course, but it gets you thinking the right way and forces you to work with all the clubs in your bag. I'm actually using the distances on my home course and try to get at least one round in (minus putting) each practice session.

No offense, but your H.S. team must have been pretty bad if they've been golfing for 40 years since and can't beat a 25 handicap.

I try and get a lesson in about every 2 weeks or so. My instructor had me start out with a 7i, then 6/5i, then 5W, then 3W, then did some chipping, then putting, now I'm back to perfecting my swing with the 7i and working on more specific details while still practicing the other stuff on my own time.

Definitely Ben Hogan's book is going to be useful for you, so you can go your route and read it first before getting instructions. Bear in mind that every instructor has their own methods of teaching, but the stuff Hogan covers in that book seems to be pretty well accepted as standards. Do what works for you!

lolol I missed a comma It was meant to be ex-hs golfers, guys golfing for 40years. I also just estimated teh avg of my worst rounds for handicap :) im only 22 ill have it figured out in a couple a years when I get better. I also dont have the time or $$$ to play 20rounds at rated nice courses to figure it out!

I want to go play 9 holes somewhere soon. Do people get pissed off if they are behind someone who sucks?

Yes they will yell and scream and laugh at you the whole time then insult your manhood when your done.

JK I would go out with somebody who is good your first time going solo would be kinda rough. You'd want somebody to show you the etiquette and how to treat a golf course, and how to keep a steady pace.

Yeah I plan on going with my Dad, he use to play a lot but he is probably a little rusty :)

I'm going with friends on Monday. If I play poorly I'll switch to a scramble style and play from their best ball so we don't play too slow. I'll still get my swings, and at this point I'm not worried about scoring, I know it will be bad.
