Hey everyone,

I'm looking for some advice on my downswing - I don't see anything too terribly wrong with my backswing and I'm mainly worried about my impact position so interested in comments related to that area unless you see something that would affect that.

I've been to see a PGA Professional a few times (who I really like) and he basically hit the nail on the head that I'm flipping my hands through impact resulting in inconsistency and lose of power. He recommend a couple drills:
1) putting an object about a 1.5 feet behind the ball and have me start my backswing from on top the object and then swing normally and not hit the object
2) do short pitches just in my right hand and focus on my right wrist angle at impact and keeping it in the follow through (with like 1/4 swings)

I do these drills before starting at the range and I always feel like I'm making progress while doing them. However, once I get up to the ball, it doesn't seem to show in my full swing. I'm going to keep trying these drills, but I also wanted to hear what other drills people have done to weed out this bad habit.

*Sorry if the video is not up-to-par; I have a Casio EH-FX20 and shot these videos at 420 FPS.*

Here are some of my thoughts on each swing:

== Swing 1 ==
I feel like I'm in a good position when my hands are level with my belt line, but then I lost my wrist hinge and use my hands to reach down and hit the ball.

== Swing 2 ==
Same as swing 1 but I wanted to see if there is any advice on other things different or if it's the exact same problem

== Swing 3 ==
This is the other swing I had today on the range - my wrists are uncocked when the shaft is parallel to the ground which loses soo much power.

I am just going to stick to one topic and drill for you to focus on that will help you see improvement.

You are right that you are losing a lot of power by flipping/casting of your wrists at impact. To better your impact position and to create some lag you should focus on pulling the butt of the club down as hard as you can at the ball.

So the drill you need to work on is when you get to the top of your swing and transition into your downswing aggressively keep your wrists cocked and pull down on the butt of the club's grip through the ball.

you've got a really nice swing man. you are flipping a bit, and that's pretty easy to fix. strengthen your grip little by little until you find you're not flipping any more. another thing, your feet are too close together to get your lower body into the shot. i'd widen your stance by about 4 inches and sit down a little more. right now you're not in a powerful, balanced position.

SpringBok: Thanks for the drill. I'll give that swing thought a try on the range this weekend and post some more videos.

senorchipotle: I'll try widening my stance, but I had always assumed feet should be approximately shoulder length apart, which mine seem to be? I understand what you're saying though so I'll give it a shot this weekend too. And thanks for the words of encouragement!

Turn with your chest, leave your arms passive throughout the swing and loosen up the grip pressure. Your tension is killing your swing

The insides of your feet should be just outside of your hips, roughly a bit wider than the width of your shoulders. Overall a very nice swing too.

Well you already know you have a sort of flimsy, casting thing going on so I'll leave that at that.

Just my personal opinion, but you look like you are still young and I think you should develop a more powerful, athletic swing. Your hips barely lead your body at all right now, compare that to some of the harder swingers who actually have torso torque in the middle of their swing and you will see what I mean. Swing hard with your body and you will find you have much less power in your arms and hands to screw things up.

Thanks all for the tips!

I had a lesson this morning and he wanted me to focus on getting the shaft as close to the ground as possible on the downswing and in turn, to hit a low shot. He also mentioned that a good way to learn the body position at impact is to extensively practice hitting low shots (which is a good skill to have anyways) and that will help you focus on getting your body through the ball and also get your body in the right position to make impact without having your hands flip over.

From the videos, I honestly feel it's the best step I've taken in the right direction as my hands seem to be consistently ahead of the ball at impact and the ball goes farther.

*Note: Shot these videos at 210 FPS and exported as .mov files that are 4x the size of the earlier videos so better quality*
Here are some videos from after my lesson this morning:

Swinging a 4iron outside today with three different views (and three different swings). I feel like my lower body action is getting better, but not quite there yet. Feedback is appreciated :)

Played 18 holes this morning (shot 78 on par70) and I played very well for the most part. However, I decided to tape a few of my swings and I'm still doing the flip but maybe it's getting better? Ironically, my practice swings look tons better at impact than my actual swing which sucks haha. Is this a mental issue now? Trying to hit the ball?

Btw, both of these shots produced push fades which is probably a result of clubface.

New video!

I had my brother shoot me playing the par5 18th hole today. Still flipping, but just wanted to some more opinions about my swing in general (and chip shot and putting!)

Shot 1: 3 wood (slight draw into left rough)
Shot 2: 3 hybrid (slight fade into right rough)
Shot 3: 8 iron (slight draw to right of green)
Shot 4: LW (landed softer than expected and left myself pretty short for par)
Shot 5: Putt (putted to less than a foot for tap-in bogey)

Updates look better than originals. Your feet are too close together. You look like you are trying to massage the ball rather than hit it. Get aggressive. Power through the shot with lateral hip movement towards the target.

nice swing.
work on pivot and 1 - piece takeaway particularly on PW.
agree with wider stance + imagine your sitting on a bar stool during your swing and be more aggressive.

Question: how far are you off the tee with driver?, there looks to be room for distance gained with improved pivot

always give way to the Greenskeeper!!

in my bag:
whatever clubs i find left behind on the course... But the Ping Anser will never be beaten!!

BALL: only get off tractor for PRO v1's..... Now, which way to Q School???

Thanks!

I'm glad it looks at least somewhat better than my original swings. I'll work on spreading my feet farther apart even though I'm sure it will feel very strange at first.

Good tip. I've been working on this general idea of attacking the ball.

For some reason, I'm awful with my driver and I never use it. I typically hit 3 wood off the tee which carries 220 or so. The shot above went around 210 or something. I don't honestly remember.

I'm definitely not a long hitter and I think it's mainly because of my casting issue. I guess I cast the club because I do not make a proper pivot or aggressive weight shift on the downswing. Definitely something I'm going to focus on during the off season

  • 4 years later...

Hey guys, I'm back!

Been working hard the past couple years getting a more consistent, repeatable swing.

Here are a few from this morning:

Front

Behind

As you might suspect, most of these shots were push fades or fades (no draws)

I'll list a couple things I think I'm doing wrong:

1) Downswing - I'm rotating my upper body too soon (probably before my lower body) which seems to bring the club over the top
2) Downswing - I don't seem to swing my arms through the ball but rather stop and cast the club down - I think that's because I'm trying to instinctively square the club face
3) Backswing - I rotate my wrists super early (first move I think) which might leave my club face too open leading to issues in the downswing?

I appreciate any feedback and/or suggestions on getting better!
