The other nicer course in that area is Royce Brook East. I haven't played it yet but I heard it was decent. On a lower level there are the remaining Somerset Co courses (after Nashanic) - Green Knoll, Spooky Brook and Quail Brook (there is also Warrenbrook but I think it is closing for the season this weekend). Of those I like Green Knoll the best. Also Rutgers University isn't too far from there and is a decent course. I like the back 9 better than the front - front plays a little easier through the first 7 holes, then 8 & 9 are tough. 10 is a great hole and even when I play twilight I'll try to make sure to fit in 10 & 11.

Royce Brook is OK but nothing memorable. The public courses you mentioned are all very well-thought of.

I recommend Architects - it'll be about 40 minutes Northwest from Raritan et al but is well worth the time to get there. If you're coming directly from NY it should be about the same distance/time.

Architects is nice - a bit pricey but I think worth it. The one's I had mentioned (Spooky Brook, Quail Brook, Warrenbrook, Green Knoll) are all part of the Somerset County system along with their higher end course, Neshanic Valley. Here's their website: Somerset County Golf

the private course at royce brook is pretty solid if you can get on it. i never played the east course.

Oh - I suppose I would be remiss if I didn't mention the 9-hole course at Tara Greens located in Somerset on Route 27. OK, there, I mentioned it. Now pretend I didn't. Other than a quirky ultra-long par 5 (600+ yds), it isn't much to talk about. Although I suppose its a decent place to take someone learning (like a young kid).

I recently played the Water Gap Country Club in PA. It is about 45 minutes North of High Bridge and I thought it was very nice and a good price. Flanders Valley isn't too far from hunterdon county and they have 36 great holes.

I utilize the golf.com golfcourse as my go to when traveling to a new area....It's the best.  I have a good buddy at The Ridge at Back Brook.  That's a monster.  Colts Neck is a great track.  From where you are you can swing down to the AC area during winter....The courses are open year round and some of the very best in your state.  Utilize Golfnow or EZlinks for discounts.  They are both easy to get great rates with.  Guy mentioned Watergap...That's nice. Also if you go that area a lot of other nice spots too.   Best of Luck Doug

I'm assuming your location is in Somerset county. Beaver Brook Country Club in the Annandale area (http://www.beaverbrookcc.com/) is a decent course and I've also heard good things about Royce Brook but I haven't played there myself.

 

I used to live in Monmouth County and the three primary county courses (Hominy Hill, Charleston Springs North and South) are all great though harder to secure tee times for non-residents. Additionally you could also go to Mercer Oaks near Princeton. Rutgers in my opinion is a fairly unremarkable course, completely wide open, but it's often maintained nicely. Rutgers also has a short game area which is a nice plus but the one at Charleston Springs is way better.
