Building a 2 Wood

I just cannot seem to hit a driver to save my life and I am very consistent with my strong 3 wood (see sig) off the tee...I am avgeraging 250 off the tee with it but when I am swinging well I can put it out there 260 or more. What I was thinking about doing was "Building a 2 Wood" as follows:

1) Use a strong 3 wood head (12 - 13 degree) as I seem to like the head size of a 3 wood better then a driver

2) Put a 44 or 44.5 inch shaft into the strong 3 wood head

What I need to know is that my current 3 wood is 13 deg and the shaft is 43 inch...if I go to a 12 degree head and use a 44 inch shaft how many more yards will I get? Is that worth 10 more yards on the average???

Please I do not need advice on hitting a driver ...I have tried many different drivers/shafts etc...and have worked with a coach...not sure if it a mental thing or that the big heads just don't work for me but I can play this game fairly well (8 handicap) with a 3 wood off the tee...I would just like a few more yards off the tee and wonder if building a "2 Wood" would do that for me...thanks...

10 yards is miles in golf I would assume. The Superfast 3-wood plays much like what a 2-wood would assumingly play like. My guess is that you will either not see much difference in distance and/or see more left or right misses with the longer shaft/stronger loft club. What about a higher lofted driver?

Have you already tried your driver with a shaft at the shorter length? They sell drivers in 12 degree lofts, but if you want any shaft but regular or senior it would have to be special order or reshaft it. What you suggest would work, but if you are sensitive to swingweight or lie there could be unintended consequences.

You could also get a Titleist 910 D3 in 10.5º and use the SureFit hosel to add 1.5º of loft (position A-4).
Bam, you get a 12º, 420cc driver.

Who even makes a 12° fairway club head? I know TEE doesn't. If you switch to another brand, that alone will lose you yards.

I have as during my testing to find a driver I tried 44.5 inch drivers and it did not seem to help...I actually think it is the large head that does not work for me???

I thought about this as I tested a 909 & 910, D3 & D2 10.5 and as I said above I think it is the large head that does not work for me???

Ha! Ha! too funny BUT with the new Titleist Surefit I was looking at the new 910Fd...it is 13.5 and you can decrease the loft .75 so in essence it would be a 12.75...and then order it at 44inch...getting closer to what I am thinking about...does anyone remeber the Callaway X Hot 3 wood...it was desgined to be hit off the tee and was 44 inches long...but it was 15 degree...that is kind of my thought here but with lower loft???

While a bit off subject, I can't help but to suggest an alternative. All my clubs come from Callaway Preowned. "Like new" on that site is brand new. I had a driver I loved, a 360 cc Big Bertha, perhaps 4-5 year old model now. It can be bought "like new" for $90. I wonder if a smaller sized driver head would be of benefit to you. Another option would be a Steelhead driver. Fantastic clubs and I had one of these prior to the Big Bertha. Food for thought at any rate. Bang makes a 11* fairway head with a maraging steel face at 192cc, and a #2 fairway with a beta-ti face, those could be options. Bang also makes a 401cc driver head that comes in 12* or 14*. SMT has their Nemesis driver head at 405cc in 12* or 14*. There's some other ideas.

Today I learned that Titleist are now making a fairway wood specifically designed to be hit off the tee. Might suit?
