Would really appreciate some help - or a link to a good online pro that does paid video analysis.

Have seen 2 guys in person, both of which have adjusted my grip but I feel like my problem is that I am cutting across it rather than not releasing it?

From the first view of your swing.  Your feet are aligned right of the fairway and your take away starts bringing the club outside the path of your feet but in line with your hips, so your hips are aiming down the center of the fairway.  The top of your backswing has the club pointing more down the line of your feet than your hips. So, firstly, I would try and line yourself up more to have your entire body be on the same page.  Second, I feel like your trying to see where the ball goes before it is hit, so your bringing yourself out of the swing before its finished, and in that process, your path goes outside to in making you either pull the ball or pull slice it, depending on the clubface at impact.  As a drill, I would suggest first lining your entire body up with the line you want, then take a heavy bag with rocks or something in it, and practice a simple half swing with the bag, and on your follow through, throw the bag at your target.  It doesn't need to be a full speed swing, just a simple toss to allow your arms and body to adjust the swing path.

I'm no expert but try putting a sponge in your right armpit and swinging without losing it.  This keeps your right elbow in and will help you with an inside-out swing path.

Also - it looks like you have a pretty weak grip.  What I do is take my stance and then hold my club straight out in front of me so it's pointing out from my chest.  I rotate the club in my hand until the toe is pointing at 10:30 or 11:00 (closed).  I then lower the club and set up at address with the clubface square to the target, which results in my hands being rotated to the right and my left thumb running down the top right of the shaft (vs. the top of the shaft).  You might want to try this to strengthen your grip.

I'd agree with colnago about the disconnecting of arms from torso causing an out-to-in swing path but I'd also add that your left arm seems to be very high at the top and should be more across your chest. I'd get two tees and put one under each armpit and swing without losing them.

Also on the takeaway I'd have the thought of "hands back" to bring the club back a little more behind the line.

yea, I see an out to in swing path. thats why you are hitting slices, no doubt. If you just tried to release more you would hit a straight pull. You have very high arms at the top and your not dropping your arms in the slot on the downswing. Clubshaft is pointing about at your right shoulder tip on the way down, should be around right forearm for an in swing but not below it. On the follow through you are going in, so its an out to in swing. Im surprised those instructors couldnt help you, They probably didnt use video, did they?

It appears to me that in the DTL view you are bring the club back almost outside the ball in an attempt to bring the club straight back and then it looks like you come back again on this path, cutting across it causing a slice.  You have kinda a 'Steve Stricker' like swing with what appears to be not alot of hand motion, which is fine.  However (as I hope it shows in the attached still shots), Steve Stricker still gets the club to the inside on the way back and is definitely more inside on the way down.  You have a good amount of rotation in your backswing, but it looks like you start your downswing rotating your upper body and casting at the ball rather than starting the downswing with your hips towards the target to get the club on a good inside path.  Halfway down you're already turned facing the ball, where Steve's left should is still pointing towards the ball.   This results in a bit of a 'flip' at the end (stop the video at :18 and you'll see very little lag).

That's my analysis 'for what it's worth'.

See this post  - the secret is the hips .

definitely cutting across the ball. play the ball farther back in your stance and open your stance up a bit. in the downswing, your arms are drifting out and over your ideal plane. i like to imagine a plane of glass like the hogan model extending from the ball up to your neck, you should never break this glass. a good drill you can do is get a cardboard box or a rolled up towel and put it just to the right of your ball, like an inch or so. when you can hit the ball and not hit the impediment, you'll be hitting straight balls.

when making contact with the ball, try to overexagerate a rightward push, but dont forget to roll your hands after impact. feel like the club releases way to far to the right. solved my problem, been hitting a mini draw ever since.

Please don't do this. Your ball position is fine. Opening your stance up won't do anything except shift your plane farther left.

Please don't do this either, for reasons explained another thread.

Look at your left arm when it's horizontal to the ground in the downswing. It's parallel to your foot line. If you want to hit the ball from the inside, you can't get your left arm that far "out" that early on the downswing.

Since you asked about online instruction, check out evolvr .

Shake hands with your target.

A good drill is to do half swings.  bring the club back until it is parallel with the ground and stop.  Then follow through with your downswing from there stopping when your club is pointing at your target.

Hard to put into words, especially since I'm in the last 20 minutes of my midnight shift.

  • 1 month later...

It appears that your entire body is sliding to the right on your backswing which results in too much of your weight being on your back foot.  From there, you're unable to get a majority of your weight to the front foot on your downswing.  I think that's why your upper body is sliding to the left.  I think it's trying to compensate for the right-weighted lower body.  From there, your hands don't get in front of the ball at impact (it looks like they're right at the ball), so it looks a little flippy to me.

In your DTL video, it looks like you pulled that shot pretty far to the left.

Please take what I say with a (big) grain of salt.  While I do have an understanding of the golf swing, you may want to PM Iacas.  That way, you'll get an answer from someone that knows what they're talking about instead of the ramblings of some goob on the 'net.

Hope it helps.

work on keeping your right arm and elbow closer to your body during your motion (stick a glove under your armpit and try and keep it there during your swing).

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
