Hi,

well, I currently own a 56 degree Vokey wedge that I got about a year or two ago and a 60 degree Callaway X Jaws I got last August they both are non CC. I have never hit them on the range and I have only hit pro V1's and such with them but I play so frequently I am worried my wedges are beginning to loose there sharp grooves. I use my 60 degree about x3 as much as my 56 and I mostly just use the 56 from full shots which I can spin plenty unless the greens are rock hard or something. I still see 2010 wedges in a few of the pro shops but I want to know when it will be rare to come across a new 2010 wedge. I love the feel on my Callaway wedge so should I just buy a groove sharpener or do those even work at all? If those 2010 wedges are going to go quick I will see if I can't pick one up to use when my 60 degree dies. I have had 60 degree Vokey wedges and they have been great too I just tried a Cally this time around. I also saw those DG Spinner shafts. Do those really do much as far as more backspin and if so how much? But nothing like brand new wedges because you can open the blade and add more loft on the 40 yard  shots and it still comes off low and has nice spin. So groove sharpener, that shaft or what?

And, I am a person who likes to land  my wedges 3-10 feet past the hole and let it spin back unless it's a back pin.

Well, you can't order them anymore, so it's a matter of stock on hand. I wouldn't be worried, though -- it seems that a great number of current wedges can duplicate the effect of the old grooves in many circumstances.

At the risk of sounding silly, it depends on what you mean by a "2010 wedge."

Callaway has issued some tweaked CG14 wedges which have Tour Zip Grooves (CC-compliant). These have a black gel insert, vice the old gold one.

And, it depends on what stocks are in a warehouse somewhere. The regional Sports Authority flyer advertised some sort of 2 for 1 deal on Callaway Jaws wedges. (Glanced over this at coffee shop; don't have exact prices) Golfsmith seems to have an ample supply of Callaway X-Forged wedges, along with a few X-Tour.

I'm unable to find any of the links frm last fall that gave "chapter and verse" on USGA rules for final shipments of the old-groove wedges.

As for the future, limitations of the 2010 groove rule are being outrun by the changes in golf balls. We have 5-layer balls now, and probably will have 7-layer balls by 2015. If USGA wanted to preserve course integrity against the pros, USGA would have a certain class of balls that pros and top amateurs would have to use. And, there's the action of the DG Spinner wedge shafts that the OP mentioned.

Another option is to get the wedges refurbished. This runs about $40 a club, plus shipping. Do refurb clubs with old grooves break any rules?

EDIT: Added comment on ball changes.

Why?

Why not land them 10 - 3 feet short of the pin if you're that accurate?

You'll find virtually no difference between old and new groves anyway.

You should be trying to control and reduce spin anyway, not adding  it.

When you play on firm greens you won,t be able to spin them back too much  anyway, so why even try?

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

If you can find the old grooves, you can buy them, simple as that. Otherwise look at the new Nike and Callaway wedges, they have some new groove arrangements that help add spin. Check out the DG Spinner as well.

Update on 2010 wedges for sale: Sports Authority has Callaway X Series Jaws wedges (2010 grooves) for sale for $59, or two for $100. The Jaws line is now being manufactured with CC grooves (see related post today). Authority also has Callaway XForged wedges for $59, and good deals on decemt second-tier wedges such as Maxfli, and Tommy Armour 845s.

A local Golf Galaxy has a batch of newer Jaws CC wedges, and is not discounting a handful of remaining X Series Jaws.

To the OP, there is almost no difference between the old and new grooves when playing from the Fairway or Sand, there is only a little less spin from the rough, so who cares, just buy the new models. I am using the C-C Vokeys for about a few months now ..... I might be me, but I see no differences.

Besides that .... although it looks cool, why do you prefer to hit all pitches with a lot of backspin ...... spinning back is not always the best option ..... I prefer a hop & stop, which is way more accurate.

I think it looks cool for the most part, and golf is about having fun and hitting cool interesting shots, I like the challange of making almost perfect contact to be able to get a lot of backspin. And if you can back it up easily on soft greens when I go and play rock hard greens I can get a nice drop and stop when other guys will be hoppin there wedges right off the backs of the greens.
