In no particular order (for The Trap Five):
  • Sam Snead - Effortless power. I like how fluid his swing was.
  • Adam Scott - Technically very good but not as smooth.
  • Ernie Els - Butter. One of the best ever.
  • Ben Hogan - As many have said he has the best self-taught swing in history. So many classic positions and angles.
  • Kenny Perry - I'm just kidding. While being one of my favorite players he has one of the weirdest swings I've ever seen.

Agree or disagree? Any additions?

Jeff

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I can't comment on past players like Snead, Hogan et al. - of the current lot I like Retief Goosen's swing it looks so relaxed i.m.o. , I used to be a big fan of Ernie Els's swing but it looks like he has become far more mechanical of late.

Steve Elkington always had that picture perfect swing. Even his fellow competitors thought so as he won best swing on tour as voted by the players a number of times.

If there's one swing I would love to buy it would be Adam Scott. Great swing and great posture. I agree with Els and Elkington too. I think Elkington would have won more tournaments if not for his allergy problems. Oh yeah, Tiger Woods, that guy has a great swing too. Wouldn't mind having his swing

Vijay has a great swing too. Little long but very smooth and fluid.

Nick Faldo
After the rebuild (mid 80s -early 90s) until he got too conceptual and tinkered too much.

David Frost
Simple but everything in the right place.

Frank Nobilo
Classic swinger of a club, simple with perfect timing.

Davis Love
Always loved this swing; not sure if people agree, but I think it's excellent.

Paul Lawrie
Smooth as syrup but you can tell it's loaded with power; very good action.

Me!
Sorry, this is not meant to be egotistical, I just love my swing. It's more loving knowing its strengths and weaknesses, and the certain positions I need to get into to get certain shots executed properly! I feel I have good control over it now and I love that feeling!

Julius Boros had a beautiful, fluid, effortless looking swing. His 18 tour wins included two U.S. Opens and a PGA Championship; Julius was a two time PGA POY. In addition, Julius was the author of at least one instruction book: Swing Easy, Hit Hard: Tips from a Master of the Classic Golf Swing .

Hmm, for pure aesthetics I'd have to say Aaron Baddeley and Geoff Ogilvy. Both have simple moves with great tempo.

F. Couples is #1 in my book. So smooth, so languid, so together.....it always looks like he is swinging about 50% but the ball goes a mile. Watch the Shell's WWOG episode where he beats up on Ernie in BC. Never broke a sweat and his swing never changed en route to a nice smooth 66.

Also to include: Hogan, Snead, Olazabal, Els, Elkington, Singh, Lucal Glover, Chad Campbell, Franklin Langham, etc.......

I'll put in a vote for Jerry Pate, I'll bet you don't remember him!

I had to think for a minute.... At first I thought you were referring to Steve Pate (at least I think that was his name). The slowest swing in the history of golf!

i like freddy couples swing and davis love III's, my swing is far far from great looking although it plays quite well, basically i swing like a right handed bubba watson with the grip of josh broadaway from the nationwide tour, cross handed with soo much leverage and gets me incredible distance, i sometimes hear people snigger at me when i address the ball because my arms are not only crossed but twisted clockwise round the grip about 45 degrees so that most of the top of my left hand is visible, give it a go on the range! i have yet to see anybody complete a practice swing smoothly let alone hitting the actual golf ball

Bubba Watson

How about this swing being "smooth"...

Damn! Looks like a hornet flew down the back of his neck when he got to the top of the backswing.

Great rhythm makes an average golf swing look far better. Ernie for one is very languid but he gets the club in some odd positions and has always had a tendency to spray it round a bit. Bit of an odd choice this but Corey Pavin anyone? If you look at his swing in freeze frame he is in great positions all the way through. It does look a little strange at full speed but technically he is very good.

I'll put in a vote for Jerry Pate, I'll bet you don't remember him!

A little bit similar and even smoother was Al Geiberger Sr., not his adopted son who plays professionally now. Perfect transition from backswing to downswing.
