Best Ping and/or Titleist Irons for Very High Handicap Player

With apologies in advance, I am quite confused on which model in these two companies lines are best suited for the new, inexperienced or plain old bad golfer.

The two brands catalogues both go into great detail regarding technology and features, with is great for the experienced knowledgeable player. I am neither as yet.

So, if one is in the market for a nice new set of Ping or Titleist Irons, which model would be most appropriate for such a low-abillity player?

if you are inexperienced i woudl stay away from any titleist irons and go with the ping raptures or the g5's. the raptures are a very easy iron to hit but the cheaper alternative is the g5.

I would also look at the other major names: Callaway X-20's, Taylor Made R7's, Adam's Idea's and Mizuno MX25's.

Cleveland Launchers are inexpensive and great irons for a beginner.

For the very high handicapper, my advice would be to check out the Callaway ERC Fusion or Cleveland HiBore irons. Both are targeted for the high handicapper, and the HiBore specifically should cost significantly less than the Ping Rapture irons.

If you want to spend even less money, Adams golf, and TourEdge offer similar clubs for a fair amount less than the big guys.

Other responders are correct, Titleist doesn't really have anything specifically designed for the high handicap player.

The words you're looking for are "super game improvement," or "game improvement" at the very least. And get fit for the proper shafts. Talk with a pro about clubs before you go and buy 'em. Why are you so brand-specific on your first purchase?

Would the 755 be considered Titleist's closest answer to irons for a mid-high handicapper?

PING is what my Father player before he died (Suicide, when I was 19, about 12 years ago now). I am a rather ideosyncratic man, and playing what my father played holds meaning for me.

As for Titleist.....I don't know, when I was younger (and played) I always liked the idea of playing Titleist golf balls. And now that I am older and coming back to the game after ten+ years out, I still like the old loyalty. That, and I find their clubs to be some of the most aetheticly appealing out there (and as I said, odd bird that I am, appearance means alot to me).

Actually, that's a very good reason for going for a brand name.

The answer I should've given the first time is that Golf Digest's Hot List in Feb 2007 listed Ping Rapture in their "Super Game-Improvement irons" section; it got top marks in Buzz, Performace, and Technology, near-top in Preference, but not very high in value. They also listed Ping G5s in their Game-Improvement section, with top-marks in everything except value, which received near-top mark.

Call me crazy, but I'm a High Capper (24 -26) and I love my Titleist 775's. I was hitting Ping G2's, but just never felt like I was making good ball contact. The Titleist just feel great on the ball, kind of soft but crisp - I still have a G2 6 iron and swing it every now and then, it it still has a mushy/muted feeling.

Hey everyone,

My initial question is: Is there a big difference between the Titleist 804s vs 775s?

I know that the 775s are an upgrade to the 804s... I was wondering if anyone knew if the 775s have become geared towards a slightly lower handicapper, or are harder to play than the 804s? I was thinking of getting the 804s because I've read and heard so many good thigns about the 775s but cant seem to afford the price tag at the moment. Is there a big difference? I know that 804s are definitely cheaper right now... ($450 brand new on tgw & dirt cheap on ebay).

I'm also a highcapper (~25) who feels on the brink of a breakthrough (lowering HC to ~15). I know that I'll require practicing more, which I'm willing to start doing, yet I feel that I haven't been able to shoot lower because of my current set of clubs (hand me down Mizuno T-zoid Pro Forged). I like the feel of my Mizunos but I know I'm in need of an upgrade to newer clubs at least (the grooves are all worn out) and I think those are a bit above my skill level. Like I said, I'm willing to put in the practice to get better and I want clubs that have good feedback. Currently looking into Mizunos or Titleist but open to other club suggestions...

Any feedback or comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks~

There was a Callaway demo day at my local golfschool this weekend. I tried several clubs and I liked the Fusion Wide Soles the best (I'm also a high handicapper). However, there was not much difference between them and my BenRoss VX Combo OS irons.

Any ping would be easier to play and grow with than almost any current Titleist product. However you will not "grow" out of the pings as you get better.

My dad just got a set of ping raptures, and they are very nice. I've been playing for about a year, and I recently picked up a pre-owned (but almost like new) set of Callaway X-16's for $300. The technology is not too different from the later X-18 and X-20 models, and for $300 bucks, it's provided pretty good value.

      I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

      Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
