Friend said I should just chill, take a few beers and not even think about what I'm shooting.

I agreed at first, but then I thought to myself that it would be a terribly wasted opportunity not to find out what kind of game I'm shooting off my first round.

Quite excited, I have no clue what to expect... Tiger seems to be able to hit a driver 300 yards, so hopefully I'll hit a 280.

That was a joke, by the way.

Going with 3 friends of mine who played before, but none are particularly obsessed about it.

You should really listen to your buddies.  Unless you've spent hours on the range your not going to break 100 on an easy muni, or even 120 on a harder private course... BUT, that definitely doesn't mean you can't still have a ton of fun with the game.  I'm 14 now, but I've been around the game with a Dad who could break par occasionally my entire life.  It wasn't until this year that I started to get serious and push myself, but I still go out there and play 18 holes and love it.  The hardest thing for some people to do to laugh at themselves, but if you can't do that, you'll probably explode within a week.  And if you're playing a municipal course, I don't think the city wants to clean up you're strewn afar extremities.

Having been there and done that, I really suggest you do not keep score the first few rounds.  You will know if you are doing poorly and considering golf is such a mental game, no reason to worsen things by keeping score.  If you do insist on keeping score, do yourself a favor and do not add up your total score until the end of the round.

Always changing:

Driver: Cobra S2/Nike VR Pro 10.5º

Irons: Callaway X-20 Tour 4-9i

Hybrid: Titleist 910H 19º & 21º

Wood: TaylorMade R11 3w

Putter: Odyssey White Hot

Wedges: Titleist Vokeys - 48º, 54º, 62º

First round: February 2011

Have fun.  Period.  Whether you shoot 100 or 150 or 200.

Keep score and save that score card.  Frame it on the wall like restaurants do with their first dollars.

Remember "par" means "par," not average.  Do not get too bent out of shape on scores, just look at it as a metric for development in the future.

Enjoy yourself, and kudos for having 97 posts and counting before every going golfing.  What gives there?

LMFAO!!!!!

Was thinking to myself to, not a great look that my avatar says "get to work" and I post here so often! Your post is definitely a wake up call.

But yeah, that's the reason why I'm so bent on keeping score. I know I'm gonna play crappy, I'm just starting out! But it'll be a way to see how I progress.

I'll get back to you in 10 mins if you've replied by then! :D

I played my first ever round of golf Thursday of last week.  Shot a 56 on a par 31, nine hole course.  I had a blast.  Gonna try it again tomorrow morning.

Maybe I'll shoot better this time.  Enjoy it.

Forgot to add, hit the golf range a few times already. Obviously no point in playing a round if you can't even swing to some proficiency, right?

I'll post the score here, and you guys can then give your opinion, bearing in mind that I've began learning the game mid-January, with patchy commitment coz of other things in life, but some more regular visits to the range the last month (make of that whatever you want).

If its your first time playing and you want to keep score badly..add two strokes(36 handicap) to par on every hole and then make that your "personal par" for the time being.  Its a way of still feeling "competitive" without trying to shoot a 72 or something.  Use that method until you get comfortable and/or start getting "birdies" on one or two holes.

My philosophy on golf "We're not doing rocket science, here."

If you can get the ball into the air, you'll be doing good.

I don't remember my very first round, I think I was around 20 years old. I wish I would have kept my score card. But I think I shot around 120.

Driver: Callaway Big Bertha 10.5*

Irons:  Callaway Apex 4-PW Project X 5.5 shafts

Wedges: Callaway MackDaddy 2  52/58
Putter: Odyessey Metal X Milled 1

This is kind of cool, being able to be a part of a newb's first rounds, even if it is virtual. I can't even come close to remembering my first rounds, but I do remember getting hooked quickly by the feel of a few good shots here and there.

Kapanda and ShockingS, thanks and please keep us jaded, worn out, and hopelessly addicted golfers abreast of what you think and discover about this wierd and magical game...

Both hopeful and fearful I'll turn to love this game as much as you guys!

But thanks for that dak4n6, I'll definitely make sure I keep you guys abreast!

First rule of golf: have fun.

Second rule of golf: don't hit anyone with your club or balls.

Other than that, it is a simple game.

Go easy on the beer and heavy on the balls.

Bring enough balls that you don't worry about loosing them.

Think about using the same club often instead of using a different club on most every shot. I used to use a 5-iron anytime I could not reach the green. Tee shots. Second shots. Third shots on par 5's. By the end of the round, I'd hit that 5-iron over 30 times and I was hitting it with confidence. I could set up well and make good contact. Better than banging my driver and hunting for my ball.

Hmmm, I might add one stroke to par for every hole next time and make that my goal, sounds fun!

    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
    • I would think that 3 in a row with the same players might get some behind the scenes examination from the SCGA if they were suspect.  Are there any clubs questioning the results?
    • What simple fact? A golf match is not a coin flip — there is a fact for you. I'm trying to help you, and you're throwing out what could easily be called sour grapes. Come with FACTS, not weak analogies. Then you've got nothing. Hopefully they've done a better job of making their case. 😛
    • It's pretty close. The odds of a 50/50 shot going your way 21 times are greater than 1 in a million!  I guess your point is, that simple fact is not enough to declare these guys dirty rotten sandbaggers. I disagree, but fair enough. I posted it here on the message board to get different perspectives, after all.  I probably won't be digging further into specific scores. I have no dog in this fight beyond a generalized contempt for sandbagging. With that said, it would not surprise if a lot of clubs shared my concern and were grousing about it to the SCGA.
    • I had an article on Cam Smith pop up along with this..... Current major eligibility list for all LIV Golf players Here's a look at which majors, if any, all LIV Golf players are eligible.
