Well, everyone should be in the swing of things as we get into the thick of summer. Our Northern friends are in the midst of their season and our Southern friends have the cheap off-season rates. Golf is happening, but is your golf happening? Post your stats for this year here and what you would like to work on based on your stats.

After 20 rounds this year (actually more, because there are some courses that I didn't get a chance to load into my Scorecard Software), here are my numbers:

Score: 79.6

Cap: 5.0

Penalties: 1.0

Low Round: 74

GIR: 43%

GIR 1st Putt: 23 feet

Fairways: 51%

Left: 24%

Right: 25%

Putts: 30.85 (30.2 is last 10 rounds)

Putts GIR: 1.96

Putts MGIR: 1.53

0-3: 96%

4-6: 60%

7-10: 38% (48% in last 10 rounds)

10-15: 12% (18% last 10)

Scrambling: 42%

U/D: 45%

Sand: 33%

What's improved? Scrambling. I have been making more putts from 7-15 feet and have less putts when I do miss the green (u/d first putt distance has not changed significantly). I attribute that to the Belly putter. It is finally paying off as putts overall has come down from 31.9 to 30.2 (last 10 rounds vs 79 rounds). Something that I need to improve is fairways and greens. At 50% on the fairway and 25% on either side tells me that I am all over the place. I need to start thinking about hitting a more reliable drive to eliminate more of one side. The real key is hitting more greens. Luckily I am getting up/down more often which also could suggest that I am getting closer to more greens, but I need to actually be on the putting surface more. With a scoring average of 80, that works out to 7.75 greens per round. If I could average 9 greens per round, my scoring average could easily be 2-3 strokes better. The other stat that really bugs me is the average of 1 penalty shot per round. It's usually off the tee and 1 full shot per round just seems a little high.

What's your story?

So you're hitting 2 or the par 5s in 2 every round - nice!

I've only played 18 twice this year and it was so ugly I had that part of my brain removed.

May have got my putting stats wrong - 31 putts..... I normally hit one par five a round if its downwind and downhill and down everything

Not much change from last year, darn it:

Rounds:  40

Avg. Score: 75.3 (Course Rating/Slope = 73.7/131)

Handicap Range: +1.0 to 0.9 (Currently 0.3)

Fairways Hit: 10.1  (72.5%)

Greens: 10.9  (60.4%)

Scrambling (30 yds & in):  53.6%

Putts per round:  30.7

Putts per GIR:  1.86

A lot of maintenance work has been put into the greens at my course, so I am hoping they will be more consistent and, consequently, lead to better putting.

Ok, I like this.  Here's what I put up in the 2012 goals thread:

Here's where I stand after 20 rounds that I've kept stats:

1. Failing miserably. GIR 26%.  Hitting 4-5, want to be hitting 7.

2. Failing moderately. U/D (30 yds and in) - 32%

3. Failing slightly.  34.04.  I hit a rough patch with 35-37 4 rounds in a row.  That accounts for a bit more than half a putt, putting me .4 over my goal.

4. Failing significantly. FIR - 39%  Hitting about 7 per round, need to get that up to 9.

5. Failed miserably.  none this month.  probably seven or so total.

Others...

Avg Score 92

HDC ballooned from 15.3 to 17.9, but should be back around 15.1 after the next revision.

Par 3 - 3.83

Par 4 - 5.19

Par 5 - 6.37

Putting distances & make %

0-3  - 94%

4-6  - 67%

7-9  - 36%

10-12  - 19%

13-15  - 22%

16-19  - 0%

20-24  - 3%

25-29  - 12%

My putting is close, and I think it will take care of itself.  I could use some work on my short game, and my FIR might be low, but I"m only making about 2 tee shots that put me in trouble each round.  I'm often in the first cut.  Mostly I need to start hitting greens.  I miss 52% of my approach shots.  Far too often I hit a crappy mid iron then miss the pitch shot.  Three tries to get on is a quick way to post doubles or worse.  I've worked on my irons and pitching a ton, and its much improved, i tend to just have a hole here or there where it all fails me.

I keep meaning to but haven't gotten it together to keep track of such detailed stats as the OP.  But there's what I've kept track of:

Avg Score:  +11.5

Fairways: 40% (16% left, 44% right)

GIR: 44%

Scrambling: 22%

Putts: 1.9 per hole

Putts per GIR: 2.1

Stats pretty much reflect what I know just from playing my rounds, which is that I need to do better off the tee and improve my putting.  Case in point.  My last round I shot an 83 on a par 71 course with two doubles and a triple.  On the two doubles I hit push slices out into the trees.  Got back onto the green in two the first time, then 3 putted.  Came up just short on my 3rd shot on the other and put myself in the bunker, out then 2 putted for a double.  On the triple I pulled a drive OB, hit a good drive, then hit my only full flub with an iron, pitched to ~8 feet, 2 putted.  Also missed birdie putts of 3-4, 8, 12, and 18 feet, and 3 putted two other greens, neither of which I had crazy long/hard first putts.

Guess the point is that all my work with the irons is finally paying off, but I've neglected the putter in practice time for too long and still need to straighten out the long clubs off the tee.

    • I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!

    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club?
