I've been Playing Golf for: 2 years seriously, but have been swinging hockey sticks and golf clubs my whole life.

My current handicap index or average score is: 13.8 as of the last 8 rounds down from around an 18 January this year.

My typical ball flight is: medium to high trajectory slight fade.

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: pulling 6&7 irons.


This is a 6 iron with an impact bag.  I'm trying to reduce my tendency to pull my 6 and 7 irons.  I would say that I have 2 or 3 pulled 6-7 irons each round, resulting in a net loss of 2-5 strokes each round depending on severity and hazards.

You look very strong.  I would work on Key #1 Steady Head though.  You sway back and then come forward.  Check out any of the steady head videos here.

Also, have your instructor take a look at your grip.  It is hard to tell in the video but I think the right hand grip especially may be too weak.

As a matter of fact my head does sway with my weight transfer.  You nailed that on the head, and I hadn't seen that video before -very helpful, thanks.

As for the hands I have heard that before.  I interlock and try to consciously keep my left hand stronger at impact so that my right hand does not take over.  Maybe I can find a close up video of grip and see what you think.

My instructor has a line drawn over in this frame so it's a little hard to see.  But I have a "wandering" right thumb at times.  Of course when a right thumb tries to take control of a golf shaft it is not good (or maybe I am mistaken).  Any thoughts on right thumb positioning?  Is this stillframe a good enough view of the grip to determine if it is weak and should be corrected?

Yes would agree with this.  Head moving back just makes solid contact harder to achieve and the golfer has to make compensations on the downswing.  Check out these drills for Key #1

Here are a few things in the set-up that will help with the pivot, keeping the head steady.  If the eyes are focused too far up, the shoulder will tend to turn too flat, this is what moves the head to the right.

Not saying the shoulders have to be at a 44* angle, just an example

Just got home from the range. I fixed my head and you're right my shoulders started turning easier. Didn't get any video but will soon. Need to make sure the head stays still and doesn't sway. With more consistent shoulder rotation, shots become much more consistent especially with the longer irons. Much appreciated and thanks again for the tidbit.

Definitely a ton of unnecessary movement during the swing. But wtf do I know? My scores are a lot worse than yours.

I really just came in here to say it looks like fun beating the crap out of that little hitting bag thing.

Yes it seems like the worse the round I'm coming off of, the more inclined I am to engage in an impact bag drill.  Coincidence?  I think not.

I've got to say that after the head movement drills suggested though, shoulder turn has increased slightly and side to side sway has decreased.  It is amazing that looking down further at the ball allows for easier rotation around the axis (spine).  Go to say I am impressed with the diagnosis and pleased with the help.

Posted a couple rounds in the high 80's this weekend so I am very pleased.  Will try to get another video up to see if the difference is noticeable.

This video is from 16HCP a couple months prior to the impact bag video.  It is not the greatest strike but I felt like posting one, and it's on my phone.

Hitting a 3W off the deck is not one of my best shots.  Thoughts?

Notice the half-retarded Barkley-esque lunge towards the ball and the Dufner-esque excessive waggling.  Let's keep the flames to a minimum, I've come a long way since then.

Posture, which was already addressed above by mvmac. Also, for the 3w off the deck, I usually move the ball back maybe an inch (if that) from where it would be off a tee just to ensure I strike down on it.

Not bad, after a little practice your swing might look almost as good as Dan's...

I've been Playing Golf for: Appx 4 years

My current handicap index or average score is: 10-12 hcp

My typical ball flight is: medium height draw

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: snap hook and losing balance


My problem right now is losing my balance on my big clubs.  Most times teeing off I do not have a pretty finish, I end up "following" the ball or falling back off my finish.  The ball flight is OK, but I just cannot seem to find that good balance in my swing with the 4W/driver.  Big miss is the snap hook.  Can anyone help?  Any other suggestions besides help keeping balance?

Bad quality and no behind view, will try to update this weekend.

Well a couple things that I think i've improved on since last TST swing review: head is staying much more still but still not perfect because of the overswing, plane is much better, contact is ball first for the most part, have reduced the push and putting a nice draw on the ball (when it's not hooking).

The bad: it looks like I am overswinging big time, but doesn't feel like it during my swing.  Also need to get rid of that Freak Nasty dip on the downswing.  I was told by a playing partner that my feet are set up much too wide on tee shots.  If I narrowed my stance, I wonder how that would affect my balance?

Biggest thing I noticed is basically not nearly enough weight forward at impact and virtually none at the finish.  Both feet are flat on the ground.  Maybe setting your feet closer together would help you transfer the weight forward a bit more but I am not exactly sure.  The balance issues and snap hooks are definitely a result of some of this as well.  Maybe this drill could help you.

    • My two cents? Don't. As a beginner that's interested in learning about the golf swing, you'll find yourself consuming a lot of information, most of which isn't even relevant to your own swing. You need to learn you can't think your way to a good golf swing. Focus on the one thing that you're working on and doing that on every swing, come what may. And remember, mishits happen.
    • Day 6 (7 May 24) - More work in the backyard focused on tempo in addition to setup.  Worked with 6 and 7 irons hitting hard foam balls - used the old MacGregor irons to mix it up a little.   
    • No! lol. But they have to be in the right sequence to play mid-handicap golf or little better. Mostly. And even in that there is range/margin for error in the motions and positions that most normal humans can handle. It helps if you have a decent idea of how a golf club moves around the body like you would any other equipment sports (baseball and hockey might be the closest) After all, fairways are 40 yards wide. Don't overthink it. Be diligent in getting basics right. I will concede that it is harder than it sounds but it certainly is not exact angle/exact position/exact degree of bend/exact speed/exact facial expression, etc, every.... single.... time or the result is horrible death. 
    • Looking to play in the Severna Park Golf league and it got rained out the first three weeks. I know the course is being renovated so it is not in great shape but the location is easy for me and I would love to meet some other golfers in my area. Anyone here in Maryland Annapolis area? 
    • I like to look at the positives.  Overall you are fairly consistent down the center with most shots 20 yards or less off center.  On most fairways that should be in play.  Sure, you had some very short duds, but also if you look there is a good cluster in the 110-125 yard range.  Sure, we would all like to be longer, but knowing your typical shot is more important than trying to hit the 7-Iron 175 Yards.  Just take more club for longer shots and do not worry about it.  Your distances may increase as you improve over time so do not get caught up on that now.
