Hi I played a tournament today. I shot 35-43 for a horrible 78.. I am usually a 2 handicap but today my swing fell apart on the back nine. I usually do worse on the back nine thinking what my round will be when I get to the clubhouse. I try not to keep score in my head but i always do .i just want to play a consistent 18 and end up with a. Good round. Any tips? Anything would be appreciated

Ahhh. Nothing like the horrors of shooting a 78.  JK.

I actually do better the longer I play.  But like you, if I'm doing well, I don't really like to know the score.  Maybe that is spooking you.

I don't know.  At your HC, probably tough because you par almost everything.  Pretty easy for me to lose track.

It could be a lot of things.

1. Getting physically tired

2. Getting mentally tired

3. Pressing too hard to shoot a better score

his statement that his swing fell apart could mean any of the 3, but if it was "mostly" bad putting as he later said, then likely 2 or 3.

I haven't tracked it this year, but when I was keeping track, I was usually better on the back 9.  I would say to try to stick with the same pre-shot routine & thoughts that work early and to picture yourself hitting good shots/strokes and finishing strongly.

You could also try playing more than 18 in a day.

Generally speaking, yes. But I've noticed if I get tired late in a round, my putting stroke can get dicey, especially on 5-8 footers.

I try to think about anything other than golf between shots. Focus for 15-30 seconds to get a yardage, pick a club, select a shot, then execute. If you're constantly thinking about golf, you can easily over-co mplicate things or get mentally burnt out.

That's what works for me.

Generally I find it is about losing concentration.  When I am playing well, I pretty much zone everything out.  But, as I have gotten older and older and older (sadly), I find that things distract me more than they used to.  Once I lose focus/concentration, it is extremely hard for me to get back on track...as witnessed by one of my recent tournament rounds...34-43 for 77.  Just flat lost concentration on #10 and never got it back.

Also, I generally know about what my score is but I think the worst thing you can do is start trying to figure out what "can" I really shoot if it keep playing well. If I get into the mode of thinking, hmmm, I'm 4 over right now, just keep making pars, I will shoot 76 and maybe throw in a birdie or 2 and it will be even better.  Those are thoughts that should never enter your head, IMHO.
