Regular vs Stiff flex

Thread Starter

Regardless of which flex is "right" for the person swinging the club:

1) If a person who is supposed to use regular flex swings a stiff flex 7 iron, all else being equal, what would be the expected differences in the resultant shot?

Trajectory, Carry, Roll, direction etc.

2) If a person who is supposed to have stiff flex swings a regular flex 7 iron, all else being equal, what would be the expected differences in the resultant shot?

Trajectory, Carry, Roll, direction etc.

I have a driver swing speed of 107 avg. All I know, is my distance actually increased when going to a stiff shaft. Not only did my distance get an additional 5-10 yds, but the trajectory is much more favorable and I stick more greens. I also have way way less side spin on my shots resulting in straighter ball flight. I was fit for every club in my bag.

When I was using the regular flex, my side spin was pretty high on certain shots and my launch angle was higher.  I didn't care for that. I want more control. Not to mention, the club felt very "whippy" in my hand. I didn't care for that feel.

In my experience, the main difference is the ball flies slightly lower with stiffer shafts and rolls out more. I also find the feel a bit rougher with stiff steel shafts.

my opinion

1)  trajectory would be low, carry would be short, roll would more, direction would have a tendency to the right, the feel would be dead. less spin

2)  trajectory would be high, carry would be longer, roll would be less, direction would have a tendency to the left, the feel would slingy, more spin.

Depends on the bend profile for the shaft. Some companies keep the same profile, just vary the stiffness. Others might have the regular shaft bend completely different than the stiff.

So depends on make and model.

+1 on this.  In addition, my experience is the lighter the shaft, the more of a shift in the relative stiffness.  Example:  With a Dynamic Gold shaft, I would be fit for the R300 with my iron swing speed to get optimum flight.  But move to the DG SL, which is lighter, and I am in between S300 and R300.

When I got fit for my current shafts, the fitter put me in NS Pro 950GH in stiff.  This is a light shaft.  I could have also gone with the KBS Tour 90 in stiff.

For wood shafts, the same applies.  I have light and stiff.

For flight, I tend to find that dispersion increases with less stiff shafts if you actually need a stiffer shaft.  If you go too stiff for your swing speed, slightly lower flight and a bit less distance.

I picked up a new cobra amp cell driver cheap off the rack, standard flex Fuji fuel shaft. I was playing a taylormade burner 2.0 with a stiff shaft. Have had only a hand full of games with the new cobra and the differences are evident. Higher launch playing same loft more spin but all in all cobra longer off the tee and more controllable. Will be putting a stiff shaft of some description in driver, will be interested to see the difference not have ever gone from one to the other before.
