Where do you look?

Which part of the ball do you look at during your swing (excluding putts)?

I'd never given this topic a moment of thought before last night, when I just happened to catch the tail end of a TV tip about looking at the front edge. I have no context for the tip at all -- like whether its purpose was to cure a particular fault or whatever.

I've always looked at the lower inside rear portion and just assumed everybody else did, too. When I Googled the topic, I found that some people actually look at a spot well in front of the ball.

I'm going to try to make it out to the range today and try a few different focus points just to see what happens. I hope I don't screw anything up because I've been playing pretty well recently, but curiosity has gotten the better of me here.

I suppose it's probably weird but I don't focus on anything when I'm hitting the ball. I "see" the picture and the ball is in the middle of the picture but I'm not really focusing on it (or anything else).

I think I go by feel from where the club was grounded to know where it should return almost as much as sight (to a fault). When I can't, or don't want to, ground the club my ball striking takes a nosedive.

Funny thing about that is that I have experimented a lot with closing my eyes at different points in my swing. If I close my eyes before the top of the backswing I don't hit the ball well at all but if I close my eyes as the downswing starts I hit the ball as well as I do with my eyes open.

It's like once my downswing starts there's not much I can do about it anyway at that point.

I don't think focusing on any particular quadrant or other section of the golf ball is a really good idea, I just look at the whole ball and try to swing my club through it and what happens, happens.

I just look at the ball.
