I looked back at the 2007 goals thread. I didn't do too well.

My goals were:

Break 80 three more times, including once on a course that in my bete noire. *** Not even close. Lowest I shot was 83.

Shoot 9 holes in par. *** Again, didn't make it. Best I did was 39.

Get my putting improved. Curreently at 36.6 putts per 18 holes. I need to get that down to about 30-32. *** A little better here. I got my average down to 34.1 putts per round.

Improve my up-and-down's. Only averageing 1.2 want to get that over 3. *** Didn't make this one either but I did improve to over 2 up-and-downs.

This was a frustrating year. I went through a swing change and really improved my ball striking. Much more consistent and solid contact. MY GIR numbers were up by 1, my fairways hit was over 9. And I actually averaged one birdie per round. However, my scoring average was still 86. The major reason was the dreaded "others." Any time I had a good round going I would inevitably throw out a triple or get a couple of doubles. One round I had 3 birdies and quadruple bogey.

I guess there's always next year....

My original goals, I give myself an A+ because I went far and above and got them completed by May. It was to get rid of the gopher burners, stop topping the 3 wood, and consistently shoot under 100 without cheating (cheating was a major problem with my scorecards last year). Well, I'd done that within two months, and had to revise and set more difficult goals.

Driving accuracy 50 percent or more: I'm about 65 percent these days.

GIR's at least 8 per round: Not a chance. Maybe five or six. Some days almost zero. Only eight or more when I'm on my best game.

Improve Putting: I never set a number, but I improved from 50 putts to about 37, which is where I've saved most of my strokes.

Shoot under 80: 81 is my best. The weather just broke here, so with the 90+ heat gone, going under 80 is a real possibility but it's a small window I have before fall sets in. I don't know how this will play out.

Handicap under 10: Went from a 15ish to about a 12. Then went in the wrong way in August, back up to a 15. An 81 set me back on the right track and I'm back in the ball game again. I'm going to need to average about 84 to get me under 10, though, and it's a pretty long shot.

I'm not giving myself a grade until December 31.

"Shouldn't you be going faster? I mean, you're doing 40 in a 65..."

Get a birdy -- not yet. I'm getting more chances, though. Just started in June and I'm getting better :)

Go a round without a 3-putt -- went 9 holes without a 3 putt.

Don't lose a ball for a single round -- 27 consecutive holes w/o losing a ball.

Overall a pretty good year for me. Extremely optimistic about next year.

Grade: B

At the end of 2006 my HC Index was 15.2
This year my HC Index is 12.2

A few goals:

- Shoot consistently in the 80's: Check
Shot every round in the 80's except for one, which was the hardest course I played all year.

- Break 40 for 9 holes: Check
Only broke 40 once shooting a 39 (Par 36). Averaged +6.5 in my 9 hole league.

I think may main improvements came in short game. I do not hit many GIR so my chipping this year saved me which was "on" most of the time. My driving also improved slightly over last year. What I need to work on is approach shots. I hit either short or miss the green.

My distance is one club shorter than last year. Can't figure out why. That happen to anyone else?

I wanted to knock 3 strokes off my game, I started the year at a 15.8 so as you can see, I'm no where close.

Although, another side goal was to improve my iron play, specifically from 150 yards in. I have made great strides in that department and my iron game continues to get better.

I should note that with the birth of my daughter in May I have been playing significantly less golf this year for obvious reasons. I was actually up to a 17.0 as recently as mid August, so I'm pleased with my recent progress.

Congrats on the birth of your daughter!

I give myself a B+

Goals (from memory) were:

Improve my drives - CHECK! Thanks to my new TM Burner driver. I'm long (for me) and in play (mostly).

Improve my scores...and start scoring in the 80s - Check and am breaking into the 80s some....not consistently.

Eliminate (really BAD) others - I'm failing here....I honestly took a 12 on a par 4 (no groups behind us) with 2 OBs and I spent a week in the beach on that hole!!!

Hit more GIRs - am still working on it. Nassau, how did you do it?

Lose YIPs on Chips - improving, but still have some Retardo Montalbons....

Overall, I'm very pleased with my progress....and I feel like I'm "almost there." Does anyone else get that feeling??

I never really wrote down my goals which i guess i should have because i can't really remember them. All i remember was i wanted to break 90 which came very quickly. So I revised it and wanted to break 80 which i almost did a couple times. I shot one 81 and two 82's.

I guess i would give myself a B+ for the season.

My distance is one club shorter than last year. Can't figure out why. That happen to anyone else?

1)What is your ball flight like? Is it straight or do you play a fade / draw normally?

2) Is everything the same physically? IE: gain weight, injury anything like that? Sometimes when my striking is off, I use to fade the ball consistently, the irons would get shorter. Once I started hitting the ball squarely again the distance in irons came right back. I like to call it "Hitting Efficiency" Obviously the more squarely you impact the ball the more efficient you are. I can hit my driver 25 yards further with a square shot than I do with a high fade.

Swing = Stacked and On Plane when possible.

I took a look back at my goals I have to give myself an A as I think I met them all.

Scoring Average:
I want my scoring average below 75. I averaged around 76 this year but too many back side letdowns hurt.
My scoring average for this year is 73.8. I have been extremely consistant as I have only 5 scores out of 56 above 80.

Win the Club Championship
I was 3rd this year but had the low round of the day on the day they toughened the course. (one day the course plays normal the second day they tuck all the pens and move all the tees two club lengths from the back.)
I won the club championship last weekend by 7 shots.

In contention at away courses
I have had a really tough time with blowing up occasionally on courses other than my home course. I want to play my game regardless of where I am playing.
I finished in the money at every tournament I had away from my home course.

Driver in control
I came a long way in this department this year, and it is completely the reason I played so much better this year. In the past the driver was long and crooked a lot. This year I hit more fairways and it lowered the scores. I still have work to do. My driver determines my score, I have never hit a putt out of bounds.
Did very well in this department. I hit 54% of fairways. I think a mid year equipment change also helped dramatically. I can always improve in this department though so it will appear on 2008's goals again.

Continue with my work ethic but practice smarter
I hit balls at least 4 times a week and that must continue, but I need to divy up my time better and include more putting and shortgame practice than I have previously.
My practicing is the sole reason I got to scratch this summer. I put in a ton of work especially with the short game. My up/down percentage was 62% which is a dramatic improvement over last year. Plus my PPR average was 31.6.

All in all it has been a great summer as far as golf goes. I have been in the money in almost every tournament I played in which has means I have received over $1500 in gift certificates and cash. That has turned into a lot of new equipment and clothing.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

1)What is your ball flight like? Is it straight or do you play a fade / draw normally?

My ball flight is straight to slight draw. I would say last year I had more of a consistent slight draw. I have not gained any weight. I did tear the ligaments in my right foot this past winter that still causes a bit of pain and I have the feeling always will. Not sure if it would affects my game.

Last year I started out hitting the same distances I am right now, but as the season when on I started getting longer. From 150 out, last year I would hit a 7iron, right now I'm hitting a 6iron. Overall not a huge problem, I just can figure out why.

I will give myself a C for now as I am close to acheiving 2 important goals, break 80 for the first time and have a single digit handicap. I have improved to a 10.2 from a 13 and I have flirted with 79 twice.

I havn't broken 80 because I have not met my practicing goals that I set for myself each week. I haven't been putting as much as I should I am not hitting the range as much as I should be.

Season isn't over yet though!

1) Break 90 a few times (only done it once and that was last year).
2) Increase length off the tee (doing well in that area at the moment).
3) Get handicap down (started the year with 23 and I´m doing well there).
4) I have to improve on putting, too often I´m too short or just there.

1) I´ve done it only once this summer too, my most common score is 92.

2) Doing well in the distance area, I was really short last summer but now I´m just an avarage hitter.

3) Started at 23 and I´m down to 17.2.

4) Gone from 38.5 avarage putts to 35.1 and I´ve managed to get rid of the short putts. Improved a lot from about 2 or 3 yards and short putts are very good. The longer ones though seem to cause me (like most golfers I guess) some problems. Next putting goal....improve distance control in long putts :)

I´ll give myself a B for the summer.

Well, I started in late october of last year, so I never really thought of setting goals. Either way, when I set goals for a single round I tend to get nervous and play even worse than usual. Looking back, I did set a few goals for myself subconsciously, though.

1. I got a birdie- a few months after I first started, I got a birdie on a par 4. I really only remember that birdie, though im pretty sure that I've gotten 1 or 2 more on Par 3s.

2. Shot under 50 in 9 holes- I shot a 48 in 9 holes the same day I got my first birdie.

3. Got a par- I've really gotten quite a few pars, but this was definitely a goal for me

4. Drive more that 200 yards consistently with the ball at a decent spot (on or near the fairway)- For a few months I had this down pat, though I've now lost it.

Things I didn't accomplish:

1. Make the JV golf team- played somewhat poorly the first day, then tired myself out hitting balls and got very nervous on the second day.

2. Shoot under 100 in a round- I was hoping to accomplish this the same day I shot a 48, but I fell apart on the back 9.

3. Strike the ball well consistently- I'm still at a stage where I'll totally top a ball, miss it, or hit it 10 yards. Some adjustments have been made in my swing though, and I'm now hitting much more consistently.

Being that I'm not even done with my first year of golfing, and I didn't really set any goals for myself, I have to give myself an A (I accomplished what I set out to do, after all, which is simply play golf). I'd like some input from others as to how good/bad this is for one's first year.

I give myself a C to C+, but there is still time to improve a few areas.

League Goals
Defend Our Title: B- We were in it right to the end, but were unable to get back over the top. It was a tough year as the least strokes I had to give my opponet all year was 4 for 9 holes. I was averaging giving between 7-20 each week. My wife was giving between 5-10 each week as well. This was only a few points from being an A+. If not for a fluke chip in a few weeks ago by my opponent and my frustration/stupidity of slapping at my subsequent putt, we would have been in the last group tied for 1st and playing head-to-head for the title.

Low Mens Average: A+ I had my best season ever. The next closest guy was 3 shots per round higher.

Average under 40: A This would have been an A+, but my blow up yesterday put me over 39 for the first time in a month.

Overall Goals
Practice D- Virtually none. That will explain why the rest of my goals were only so-so.

Handicap Below 15.0 B- I am at 16.9, down from 17.4, but had been playing better of late.

Break 40 at White Lake Oaks B I have two more 40's and 3 41's, but had to birdie the last on both to shoot 40. I did have a round where I drove my first through the fairway and had to hit a provisional. If not for the provisional I would have shot 38. That one hurt the most.

Play golf with my kids more D- Very few rounds with them this year. I missed the family vacation due to work problems and I have not MADE the time to play with them.

Play my first tournament Incomplete. To commit to playing a tournament I would have needed a new job. That has not happened yet so it will get pushed to next year.

    • You all are right, its not that big of an issue, I'll leave it alone, especially after looking at that picture of Tigers beat up putter. But I also noticed the small circle worn on the sweet-spot where he hits it every time, I definitely don't have one of those. Thanks for the replies
    • Committing to one brand of ball this year - Snell MTB Prime X, the 5 doz. pack. Like how they perform for me. At $18/doz., can live with cover scuffing. Iron regripping with GolfPrice MCC+4 Teams std. in red/navy. May be retiring Odyssey Dual Force after 30 yrs. Seems like I can't get it to the hole anymore. Kind of light and has lots of toe hang. My reg. group's hounding finally wore me down.    From Callaway preowned - trying out the Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K in double wide (less toe hang) and triple wide (face balanced). Both also noticeably heavier...we shall see.
