There are so many GPS apps ... just wondering if there's a basic no frills GPS yardage app that is better than the others.  Thx !

I used the GameGolf app last Saturday and was reasonably impressed. Didn't suck my battery dry, appeared to be reasonably accurate.

It is very no-frills:

--Hole view does not zoom (that I saw, at least) but rhere is a 'target' mode to get layup distances.

--Yardage to front-middle-back only no targets on the greens

--No auto Hole advance (have to click next. Not a big deal)

What I found helpful was the 'lock' screen. You tap lock and it will shut the screen off when you put your phone in your pocket and wake it up when you take it back out and show you the front/middle/back yardage without having to wake or unlock your phone. You can even advance through the holes on the lock screen.

For a no frills GPS app you cant go wring with FreeCaddie. There are 2 versions, basic FreeCaddie which gives yardage to front, middle and back of green and the paid for Pro version where you can add lay-up points and hazards.

Its accurate, easy on the battery and you can add the courses before hand and selct the course you are playing.

Check out google play. Free version is worth a try.

I have both Golflogix and Golfshot.   I like both.

What droid phone do you have?   Some of the older ones will use a lot of battery and you'll hear people complain about that.    If you have something newer than a 2012 phone, the battery life will be sufficient for 18 holes if you follow the apps suggestions and turn off the screen after each use.   I have an older Samsung Galaxy S3 and I can get 18 holes in without any problems and still have about 30% left.   I did recently but an extended 4200 mv battery and the last time I used each app, I only  used about 30% of the battery life.   You can also buy portable chargers from Amazon.

Each of the apps have advantages and disadvantages.   Both with give you a basic app but offer extra options for a membership.   The Golflogix app uses an artist's rendering of the hole; Golfshot uses GPS images.   I find the Golfshot a little more difficult to see on a sunny day.   Both are great for distances, with distances to any point on the hole.   Both will give you several metrics for statistics.    I like Golfshot's online stats a little better than Golflogix's.

I've owned both for two years and still can't determine which I like best.    Go to Google Play and read the reviews.   I believe they both will allow you to play a couple rounds with the full membership to determine if you like their app.

Good luck in your quest.
