Long time no talk! But I'm always lurking.

Anywho, I'll cut to the chase.

I've been improving a lot faster in the last couple years after learning the ball flight laws and just proper form and grip in general. I really don't have a big miss and should be heading toward a single digit handicap when I start recording my rounds more...

except ...

on occasion, maybe twice or three times a year (in MN that's a lot), I'll get the dreaded

Spoiler

shanks

I've had them from swinging too much out to in, and from also too much in to out. Unfortunately when I get them it's mostly on the course and not on the range. So what I have to do after the round is head to the driving range and put an object on the other side of my ball and groove that path so I'm hitting the center of the club.

Well, it happened to me again last week, got the shanks on the course and imagining an object on the other side of my ball only helped some of the time. So I went home and researched for, cripes, I probably watched videos for 2 hours and came across this (video below). It basically states, set-up with the heel or hosel aimed at the middle of the ball, rather than the middle of the club face. That may get you to re-route your club and body to swing and find the middle of the club face. Well I tried it, and my goodness it worked. For the last three rounds it's been like Angels in the Outfield, the angels have swooped in and saved my swing on every shot. Three excellent rounds, not sure if I've ever hit the ball better. And there lies the question. This is sort of a set-up band-aid right? At what point would I remove this band-aid, or if it continues to work...do I ever remove!?

I didn't watch the video as I don't want the "S" word swimming around in my bio-gel.  As for when to remove a Band-Aid...I think the sooner the better.  A temporary solution is, by definition, a temporary solution.  That being said...there are situations in golf when the bog-standard address position is less effective.  Something creeps into your swing and a small adjustment helps to mitigate the damage.  That's fine during a round but, in the long run, it's better to treat the disease rather than the symptoms.

Usually you don’t  have to remove the band aid...it will be removed for you. Violently and without warning.

    • Day 1: 2026.01.03 Played 18 at Cape Kidnappers. Getting back into it after a few days off. Mixed results.
    • Day 40: short range session. Worked on my drill mostly. Finished with some full swings and driver swings. Range was packed because it was so nice out. Solid session though.
    • Day 5, 1/3/26.  Today was a weird day schedule-wise, but I did find 15 minutes to hit 6-iron shots (indoors, off a mat, into a net).  I also got to thinking about yesterday's round and, other than a few thin shots (that I think were weather/grip related), I didn't have any wild non-driver shots, which was weird for me.  I need to get back to video, which is tough in my setup. Also, this wouldn't count on its own, but anyone reading this and thinking about doing their own 5 minutes daily, check out Fit for Golf's latest podcast episode.  It's only a few minutes and Mike does a great job talking about the importance of doing a bit each day.  That also reminded me, I let my FFG subscription lapse, I'm going to renew it.
    • Day 32 (3 Jan 26) - Misty, rainy day - opted to rehearse swing in the mirror - focused on face position at P6 thru P9.
    • Day 460 - 2026-01-03 Set up GEARS Hybrid for a lesson, so used it in the morning for checking a few things from yesterday.
