I thought about going ahead and buying one with the intention of returning it if whomever I picked didn't win. But, then I noticed that "All sales are final" thing. Well, if you were in the market for a Callaway Driver maybe the chance to get it free would put you over the top.

I think that’s a legal requirement isn’t it? For some reason I remember reading that about some old contest from another company.

Weird rule IMO... But okay, I may as well pick a Callaway guy and send it in. Looks like I have nothing to lose aside from a few minutes of time and a stamp.

It's not a weird rule. It's required to differentiate a sweepstakes from a lottery or a raffle. Lotteries can only be legally operated by the government and raffles by non-profit organizations.

I filled out one of the contest vouchers from Dick's Sporting Goods a couple of years ago when they did a promotion if Rory won. I had to actually get a manager because nobody knew what I was talking about, but she knew exactly where they were in the drawer.

That's my point about the weird rule. How come the government can legally operate a lottery and I can't? Or you can't? I don't want this to get political but I've always hated the hypocrisy that the government shoved down our throats with their holier-than-thou stance on gambling.

"Gambling is BAD!" ... "Oh wait, we can't control our own spending... okay in that case ... Gambling is kinda bad... I mean well it's pretty bad unless we get the proceeds from it."

BULLSHIT - IMO  The government overspends so badly that it runs commercials on radio and tv inviting people to buy lottery tickets while simultaneously stamping out all rival forms of gambling and warning of the damage gambling can do. We play a lottery in which the government pays out 47% of the incoming revenue to some lucky winner, keeping 53% for themselves. Meanwhile mandating that even in Vegas casinos have to pay out 75% of the money they take in at every slot machine.... Oh, and by the way, the casinos aren't allowed to tax their winners, the government does. It taxes casino winners AND lottery winners. So even that 47% payout from the lottery gets taxed usually to the tune of around 30%...

Once again - BULLSHIT!

They should change the name of the lottery to "TAX FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE REALLY BAD AT MATH".

Because in theory, the government lottery is regulated and not out to scam you. My lottery might be won by my friend through "random" chance.

Again, this is off topic. But there are a million ways to make that problem go away. Vegas has a gambling commission that oversees it's gambling. All around the world there are private lotteries and raffles. Our government doesn't allow it under the pretense of "It's bad for people". Sort of like smoking is bad for people, but we will be happy to accept the 5 dollars in tax per pack.

If the government just came out and said "Look, we can't handle the competition and we are absolutely addicted to the revenue stream, at least I'd have some respect for them."

Yea, let's stop doing that. Regardless of the government's motivations, the no purchase necessary rule does protect consumers. In this case it means we can enter without shelling out $500 on a driver.

Exactly. They hated online betting because they couldn’t get their cut. So they banned it. It’s a revenue stream plain and simple. Oh and also a way to get citizens to pay for stadiums for rich owners.

I'm with you, brother. Who are you going to pick? Phil seems like the best option for a lot of reasons. He's kinda rolling right now... I know its the Champions Tour but winning sometimes breeds winning.

It's the US Open. Phil would be my pick if the sweepstakes was for runner up.

I'm probably going to pick Xander Schauffele.

I think Xander has a much better chance than Phil. I think the story would be awesome if Phil won but I don’t think there is a good chance of it happening.

    • So I am aware that "the committee is allowed to set its own standards of player conduct in a code of conduct adopted as a local rule" (rule 1.2b) I also understand that there are some aspects that are allowed to be entered, and some that are not allowed.  My question specifically is: In which form does this code of conduct need to be available? Is it enough for someone to say "that's part of our code of conduct", or is it a requirement, that the code of conduct is in written form? Also, is there a need that the local rule points to the code of conduct in any way?   For better understanding: I'm playing competition and the next course that we play has a "no smoking policy". I don't have a problem with it, as I don't smoke anyway, but one of my team-mates does, and someone told him "You'll get disqualified if you smoke on the course".   Now I have looked at their local rules and there is no reference to a "code of conduct". I'm not sure if they even have an official "code of conduct" that states that smoking is not allowed.   I fully agree that he SHOULD respect this request from the club, but I am wondering if the club would really be allowed to DQ this player for this, if it's not properly documented in their local rules/code of conduct?  This is an official national amateur tournament, so not just something organized by a club for its members.
    • A few months back I purchased the following swing aid on Amazon ($130). It is solidly made of steel and heavy and stable in use. I use it both at the range and at home. Swing Plate Dual PRO by Jamie Brittain - Swing Analyzer Aid - Fits Standard 8mm Alignment Rod Sticks - Teaching Swing Plane Perfector - Indoor/Outdoor Golfing Practice. This winter I set a goal for myself to improve my backswing/downswing to be more consistent and on plane. I had a two way miss with my approach shots this past golf season. I have a hitting set-up in my garage, but I needed something to provide feedback while swinging the club. I came across the Swing Plate while browsing YouTube.   I set it up with the correct angles for my 8 iron. I started out with just the back rod in place, which prevents me from getting too far inside on the backswing. Started out slow and as I got comfortable increased my swing speed. Now I also came across a YouTube video on building a better backswing and getting more width in the backswing and added that to my practice. That video is here:    This video is a bit wordy since you are basically a fly on the wall as Ian gets a lesson. It took a few replays to be able to get the substance of the instruction. It was well worth the effort. Over the last two weeks I have been able to get out on the course and gauge how successful my practice has been. Overall, my consistency with approach shots has improved greatly. Incorporating the added width in my swing has also added a few yards to all my clubs.  What has your off-season training been like?
