After fine-tuning my swing, I'm now heavily hitting down and compressing the ball - my typical iron flight is very high; roll is practically non-existent, even with the longer irons. There's too much backspin.

The end result is that my total distance has decreased, even though my swing speed has noticeably increased.

How do I reduce this backspin and hit further?

Use a harder ball!

Try the Bridgestone B330 before you try any 'low spin' balls.

Having a lot of spin is not bad. Learn how to use it to your advantage and learn how to take some off when you have to, especially on full wedge shots. Learn how to hit more club with shorter swings, i.e. a 90y 3/4 PW instead of a full SW.

Hitting down on the ball is one of the causes of backspin, if you want to decrease backspin and get more distance work on making more of a shallow, level, sweeping impact.

Hmmm I have the same problem you do. I haven't golfed in 5 months but I have a abnormally high ball-flight. I generate a lot of spin. I was using the ProV1s but recently switched to the ProV1x. That helped a little bit. But I'm not satisfied. I still hit my 19 degree 2 iron higher than most people hit a wedge. This is frustrating. But I'll be honest with you, when I was using the regular 1's I hit my 2-iron about 220, and when I switched to the X's I hit it about 235+. But 2 and 3 iron were the clubs that had the most drastic change with the change of ball.

Generally when I hit my clubs I have almost a balloon effect. Yes shallowing your swing will help you bring your ball flight down, but you may be in the same boat as me. I'm 6'0 tall and I have monkey arms. I have almost a 6'5 reach, this makes having a shallow swing an impossible feat. My natural swing is very steep. All I can say is good luck to you. Please let me know if you find something that works for you. I'm very interested in a solution to this high ball flight problem.

im in the same boat you are. i personally really like the high ball flight and lots of spin, its really helped my game out since i changed my swing up a bit to hit more down on the ball. except when I want the ball to get up!

it sounds like your Swing is too steep, try a long more "drag-back" backswing. Are you immediatly lifting the club off the ground at a high angle on the backswing?

are you hitting off of a rubber mat at the range? at the range the past three days i lost distance and hit the ball a mile higher than when i hit off of grass because the club doesn't dig into the dirt, making pure spin....i hit a 4-iron and it spun backwards about 10 yards

i agree with some of them, to try a harder ball.

also, have a look at your ball position and swing arc.

"People think the size of the head is most important. Wrong. It's getting a quality shaft. test different shafts to see which goes the straightest. Also, more degrees of loft on the head is better than less. Eleven degrees is about right."

Perhaps because of the shafts also? I have a hunch you're using DG, which has low launch and high spin characteristic?

I have the opposite problem. I hit too low and I'm having trouble getting good distance with longer irons because I couldn't get enough ball carry. I do place 2-3 balls forward from the center at address using mid-long irons. Hmm...

Just like anything in golf, it could be from a billion different reasons. For me personally, my left wrist was breaking down. At full speed you couldn't see it, and people would tell me all the time how beautiful it was. However, I realized I had to work on the flat left wrist at impact (as opposed to cupped wrist) and my ball flight has come down, it's longer, but I still get that spin, which is perfect. My driver rolls very well, and my irons are cutting through the wind.

Make sure your left wrist is flat at impact, and you're not camping out on your right side. In other words, your shaft should be perpendicular to the ground at address, but it should be tilted forward at impact. It is absolutly impossible to have an overly high ball flight if you are doing this correct. I bet you are not. All the pros are flat and tilted at impact, so should you.

For me, it was because I wasn't covering the ball with my chest.
When I started covering the ball, the ball flight was much lower.
I still enjoy hitting the ball high but you'll never play well in the weather that we're getting right now.
You might want to try to swing easier or try putting the ball a little bit further up in your stance.

I can't think of a better way to hit your irons (as long as you hit 'em where you want 'em to go).
