You and I must have different definitions of “really hurt.” Jake Evans is out indefinitely with a concussion.

Good point, but I guess I was thinking of something more permanent that I don't like to even mention.

Maybe, but it is severe in the aspect it is the playoffs.

That should be irrelevant.

Same rules throughout. The NHL sucks at that though.

I feel like you’re overlooking the significance of a traumatic brain injury.

No I'm not overlooking anyting, I'm just saying the nhl needs to stop these type of hits. You are reading into my comment something that isn't there. I am on the side of the injured player.

Somebody's really going to get hurt one of these days.

Again, someone did.

And you think four games sends a message.

I’m having a hard time seeing this. First, you said someone is really going to get hurt one of these days, even though the kid is out with a concussion. Then, you said you were thinking of something more permanent, as if a brain injury doesn’t have the potential for permanent repercussions.

My point is the things you said can happen have already happened. Time and time again.

I did say I wouldn't mind seeing more games suspension. By the way, Montreal won the game this evening 1-0. Winnipeg could have used his offense but didn't have it. You could say he lost the game for Winnipeg tonight by being out and suspended.

Current Habs players and some outspoken former NHLers like Sean Avery had plenty to say...

There are some who argue that they didn't see a problem with Scheifele's hit, not me, the other night as quoted in the following link.

Four games for that hit feels a little weak. Seems clear from the video that Sheifele had no real chance to actually prevent the goal with the hit and that he was angling for the hit rather than a play on the puck anyways. NHL better hope the series doesn't go to Game 6.

@Billy Z I’m confident anyone with an eighth grade reading level can see what you’ve said and point out how dippy it’s been.

Ever since the CTE became a well-known public fact, the NHL has been walking a tight rope.

The league knows full well that a large number of its customers want a physical game with full, robust body checking. But now it can't afford to have guys get seriously injured the way they used to. The result is this weird, uneven style of disciplining various infractions. In regard to the Schiefele-Evans incident I've seen people say he ought to get 10 games, 4 games or nothing at all, even a charging minor.

The challenge for the NHL is finding some sort of consistent way to deal with things. I'm not sure if this is ultimately going to render pro hockey into a non-checking league or not.

There’s a significant gap between enforcing rules for player safety and making the league no body checking. The object isn’t to make the sport injury-free, which is impossible, but to remove unnecessary danger to players from non-hockey plays.

There is a heck of a lot of gray area in there.

"Non-hockey plays"? So what exactly is that anyway? Obviously there are gratuitous examples (Hunter on Turgeon), It, I think, is easier in theory than it is in practice.

Could you not say something like "where the hit was primarily intended to hurt the opposing player rather than separate them from the puck"?

Not as much as you and other dinosaurs like to pretend there is.

They’re in here:

https://cms.nhl.bamgrid.com/images/assets/binary/319997074/binary-file/file.pdf

The term isn’t explicitly defined, but one can argue that any play that breaches the rules and results in a penalty is not a hockey play.

If they changed all non-fighting major penalties to include a game misconduct and automatic suspension with fines, that would go a long way towards preventing unnecessary injuries.

If there wasn't still grey area then, by your logic, the NHL would have dealt out several of your 10-game suspensions. I know. The dinosaurs are still in charge.

Don't fret. The trend is obvious.

Player protection is a priority and eventually the NHL will be a non-contact version of the sport. I'm sure you and your enlightened friends will enjoy the game very much.

Hockey, like Rugby and the NFL etc is not just a contact sport. It’s an IMPACT sport. Rugby has recently introduced tighter laws in the “gray” area involving head impacts. The result of this is that the impacts are still significant, the game is still physical, but players needs must be more accurate with their physicality. They can still be rough sports and a fair bit safer.

    • Day 203 (21 Nov 24) - Weekly nine hole round with my good friend.  Played it as a 7 club challenge (7w, 5h, 7i, 9i, GW, LW, putter).  As we were playing up a set of tees, no super loss of distance off the tee.  Had some good looks at birdie, failed to convert.  These sessions with fewer clubs really helps with course management.
    • Tell me about it - shouldn’t have second guessed…
    • My wife is going to drag me to see Wicked.   She is very excited to see it.   We saw the musical while in Chicago and thought it was very good.  I'm not usually a fan of musicals but I'm looking forward to seeing this.   Gladiator 2 does look good.   I'm going to go back and watch the original Gladiator before going to the theater.
    • MSN Glover expressed his dissatisfaction with what he termed as 'cool kid meetings' between Jordan Spieth, Patrick Cantlay, Tiger Woods and other high-profile golfers. "I think it's terrible," he stated. "And then hiding behind pace of play, I think, challenges our intelligence. They think we're stupid.     "Don't cut fields because it's a pace of play issue. Tell us to play faster, or just say you're trying to appease six guys and make them happy so they don't go somewhere else and play golf." Fitzpatrick joined the conversation on X (formerly Twitter), with the 30-year-old echoing Glover's sentiments regarding the PGA Tour changes. "He's so right," Fitzpatrick posted. "Pathetic that pace of play is spoken about every year and nothing ever gets done."     I agree. Instead of  penalizing  players for  turtle  play they appease the  slow jerks  by  cutting the  fields. They will play even slower  knowing they will NEVER be  penalized.
    • I've been Playing Golf for: 3 years  My current handicap index or average score is: 1.5 My typical ball flight is: neutral /slight draw The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: hook   Looking for some advice please folks. Started golfing three years ago and got hooked. Had some early lessons and was a slicer etc.  I used to have a severe inside takeaway and through working hard to fix as ever (this game…) it’s now gone too far the other way where I take it back way outside.  i think it looks really bad and have gotten a lesson last year where we tried to competely reset the swing and it ruined things for months as I couldn’t get it to stick (my fault).    anyway do I need to fix this? I hit it reasonably solid but don’t know what else I’m looking at or need to clean up. All opinions welcomed!  Videos:
