I've been Playing Golf for: 1.5 years
My current handicap index or average score is: 15-16
My typical ball flight is: Straight or Baby Draw
The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Fat shots and pulls

Finally got a few videos today. Given the limited space at the range, my face on view cannot see the ball, but I hope it will provide enough detail in my swing for some feedback.

Things I have been working on during my practice sessions since my open heart surgery 4 months ago:

1. Getting weight back to lead side and finishing in balance

2. Deeper hands on backswing. I know I don't have a long backswing and feel when I try to go "longer" or back further, bad things tend to happen. Typically fat or thin shots as I feel it really messes with my timing and therefore I am well out of synch.

3. Regripping less. I used to do this incessantly and I have mostly minimized it although I see it on my take away in the DTL video.

4. Consciously trying not to chicken wing

Thanks in advance for any and all feedback.

Love the EGA avatar! It’s great to finally get a swing video from you. You have a great centered turn. I know very little about the swing besides what I’m told to work on, but I will say it would be helpful to keep the ball in the field of view and try to get the camera angle on the DTL a little more behind you...it appears to be a little left from directly behind the hands and toes.

Thanks for the feedback woodzie264! I apologize for the videos here on my first go. I'll be more cognizant of the angle for the DTL vids next time. The hitting stalls at this particular range aren't wide enough for the face on view to get everything in the frame. I'll try to come up with a way to rig the camera at a different angle facing more downward perhaps. Thanks again

You need more shoulder turn in the backswing. Hand depth comes from turning.

Agreed. Your hips appear to turn, but your shoulders seem to turn little more, so the arms lift and take over.

Thank you @billchaoand @iacas for the feedback. Aside from stretching to gain mobility, any suggestions or drills you can think of to bring my shoulder turn along?

I don’t know that you need to stretch. You might just need to be aware and to do it.

Look at iacas’s post to my thread. This was the very first assignment (The Wall Drill) I was given and I think this is to what they are referring:

Number four is a stretch for shoulder turn. I do this for every warm up.

Thanks for this exercise @boogielicious. I will add it to day 2 and 3 of the Covid 30 day training Erik made that I have started doing.

I hit the range this morning and worked on shoulder turn. My main thought that really helped me was "pull" your right shoulder behind your head. I was actually amazed how much farther I could turn when I thought about it. The positive result was nearly instantaneous with a 2 to 2.5 club length further in distance! I was quite surprised and excited. Obviously, if I didn't specifically think about my shoulder turn, I would revert back to my old swing. Hopefully in a few weeks of practice, it will become more ingrained and I will update a video then.

Thanks fellas for the feedback and the yardage gain from something so simple.

  • 2 weeks later...

I had a lesson yesterday, 01-20-21. Worked on deep shoulder turn and initial move in downswing to shallow club shaft. Also feeling of holding back to target as long as possible to create room to come through with club.

We also spoke about my 2021 season goals also as outlined on the forum. We added getting driver average to 250 yards.

1. Break 80

2. Lower and sustain HI from 15.9 to 11 by the end of central Ohio season

3. Continue lessons, at least one every 6-8 weeks.

4. Increase GIR/nGIR to 50% from roughly 35%. 100 yards and in was one key contributor to lowering my HI last year.

5. Play at least 75 rounds

For my future reference, one of my A4 stills showing progress on deeper shoulder turn as of 01-20-21

Drills and feels to continue:

Bump & down pressure move

Hold back to target during downswing

  • 1 month later...

I’ve had two more lessons since my last post. Continuing to work on full swing with a small bit of chipping and pitching.

8i practice session today. Feels I’m working on.

Still working on back to target longer in downswing

Today I did an uppercut punch move from address finishing the uppercut right of target line.

Did same thing with a topspin tennis swing move. Both of these seemed to help with maintaining lag a bit longer and a feeling of swinging out to the right more. It also helped finish with higher hands instead of a “baseball swing” around my body provoking my dreaded pull miss

Focusing on keeping head behind ball at impact. At some point, I started sliding a bit and my contact took a severe hit. When I get it right, contact is crisp

Of note since these 3 lessons, I have noticed my swing plane has gotten shallower. Also, hip and shoulder turn has improved greatly. Occasionally I still lapse into stopping my shoulder turn and letting my arms take over and lift

In comparing this still at A4 to the previous post above, I think I’m moving the right way with more depth.

I'd be cautious about just how much the hips are turning back. Your pelvis appears to be almost facing the camera there.
