I was watching chipping technique by Padrig Harrington on you tube.  He says to put an alignment rod about six inches behind the ball.  On takeaway and striking the ball you shouldn't  hit the stick.  I feel like I drag the club too much on regular shots.  Would this be the same on regular iron shots and chipping.  Should I not hit the stick?

Different types of takeaways exist. Some pick the club up sooner than others. I don't think you'd want to drag the club back 6 inches and have it still stay in contact with the ground.

I'd also suggest that instead of an alignment stick, use a towel.   If you are coming in that shallow it's easier on the ears and clubs to hit the towel instead of an alignment stick.

I will try the towel method also.  I have just always had trouble hitting ball first. I got to watching videos and came up with the drill of putting something behind the ball.  I can chip pretty well without hitting the alignment rod ( while in the house chipping I use a pencil) but on a full swing I have problems.  I think I am bringing the club back to low.  Only problem is I have probably been doing this forever and I know it would or will be hard to change.  Still love to try though.

If I put anything on the ground remotely near the ball....I swear I’m gonna nail it every time....

    • Day 1 (19 Jan 26) - after a week lay-off due to travels, felt great to get in some drills in the backyard today.  Started with lead arm only short pitches focused on squared face and light divot post ball.  Haven’t done this in a while and it showed, with some skulls and slices.  Settled into easy flighted balls - wrapped up with standard two handed swings.  Good restart to the daily drills. 
    • That depends what you do within those two.  Are they your only options?   Check out Fit for Golf if you get a moment.  It's linked on the sidebar;  I did it for two years, stopped for a really bad reason, and I plan to get back to it soon.   Mike Carroll also has a great free podcast about a lot of topics in golf fitness. 
    • Day 19, 1/19.  Finished work in time to spend 25 minutes hitting balls (hit 15) indoors, off a mat, into the net.  Usual focus.    
    • Day 30 - 2026-01-19 Got 10 minutes in on the mat / net working on exagerrating movements I'm working on. And grip. Also worked with my friendly AI to summarize key negative tendencies I have so that I can build a personal checklist to follow. Will do more mirror work tonight.
