I would say Nickent 3DX Hybrid irons, very user-friendly and forgiving. I would say go to a driving range where you can borrow some irons to hit, most range facilities I've been in are very helpful to first timers. Good luck, let us know how you go...

i'm looking at taking up golf and was wondering what the best clubs would be for a beginner

Hello and welcome to TST. Pretty tough to answer that. Like asking what’s the best wine to try for one who’s never had wine. I can’t say I agree with @Colins69 however. Your best bet is to find a Super Game Improvement set of irons used from a quality brand like Callaway, TaylorMade, Cobra, Ping. If you want to get an ‘all in one box set’ you’ll do fine if you can score a box set of Callaway Edge. These have been reviewed and did pretty well for the price. Cheers.

Nickent went out of business in 2009

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

No kidding mate, I suggested nickent because of the quality and cheap cost. Like start for a $100 and then you decide if you want to play alot or not, not a big investment to lose lol.... imho.

Welcome to TST!  We're glad you've joined.

We all understand beginners don't want to drop a lot of money on clubs and other equipment to only find out that they don't like the game.    I believe that @Vinsk gave you some very sound advice.  Good luck.

    • the rules have changed, but this would fall under 11.2 in the current rules.  General Penalty to any player who deliberately deflects a ball in motion, and you must replay the putt.
    • Day 250 4-29 Getting chest through with speed on downswing and wrist arch. Also worked on some moving the pelvis slightly away in the backswing. Feel like im going too fast and long, looks like it on the recordings too.
    • Interesting that it's no penalty, but then again, I can't imagine someone would purposefully put their foot out there in this situation or one like it.  And then there was the time someone purposefully deflected his own ball during a major, but that's very different too. The only time I can recall a ball I hit hitting another player or their equipment was ages ago -- over a decade and a half ago.  I had a 3' putt for an 89 and someone (a random pairing, not someone I knew) decided it was a good time for goaltending practice.  That wouldn't fall under this rule, though (and it wasn't in a tournament anyway). Thanks for continuing to share these, Dave!  I always find these interesting.
    • Day 51 (29 Apr 26) - Worked with a few of the golf team kids plus my grandson (he’s too young for the team as it’s middle-high school age and he’ll be 10 Sat).  He put on a small hitting clinic (hitting off the same tees as the rest of the boys) - one of the older kids called him a “coach”.  Worked in a few shots for myself - had the light bag: driver, 7w, 4 - 6 - 8 - Pw - Sw (DCI 962’s except the Sw a 981) and Zebra putter….got in some great tee shots, a couple of recovery and an awesome up and down for bogie: 55 yds out, hitting 4th shot due to 2nd getting tangled in limbs - see the window I need to hit for a tight spinner with the Sw - nail it to a postage letter distance from the cup for a tap in bogie….my kind of practice.
    • Day 21, April 29.  Before going to work this morning, I worked in my indoor practice room for 20 minutes.   This was entirely 6-iron shots with the usual step.  Video yesterday showed me that I'm still straightening my trail leg too much (leading to the backswing length issue I've been working to fix), so I focused on not doing that in my rehearsal swings.
