With my GG not functioning I am looking for a way to determine strokes gained/lost putting.  On my last round I tracked distance from the hole for my 1st putt and my total putts by hole.

I feel I putted well but is there a tool somewhere I can enter the data and get my stats?

Okay, good, you did the first part.  I marked my first putt distance (estimated) last round, too, in case I were to find a tool like this (I feel there was one at some point), so here's hoping someone has one.

Strokes Gain Calculator - putting

Check this out.  I've not used it so I can't vouch for it but the price is right!

Nice tool.  I gained 3.65 strokes on a 9 hole round.  I will take that any day,

of course, that assumes I estimated my distances reasonably accurate.

I just re-calculated vs. 0 HCP and that is +0.78.  Big difference but still a positive. And I am nowhere near a scratch golfer so I am happy.

I'm using this now religiously comparing my putting to a zero handicap.    Some days I putt like crap, other days better than crap but it gives me a realistic target.   I need to work on distance control.

I have a question in counting putts.  I have always counted only putts from the green, not a putt from the fringe or fairway.

tonight I played 9 homes and had 5 One-Putts.  Several were short, between 1 & 4 feet. The short putts were not due to great chips or pitches. Instead I had several shots that were from 2-5 feet off the green and I used my putter and got close.

my question is do I only consider putts & distances from the putting surface, ie. a 1 putt from 2 feet, or do I count the longer putt from the fairway as a 2 putt from 30 feet?

I’ve not yet done the actual calculation so it may have no difference on SG but which method is correct?

Technically you count putts from the putting green.

But in the overall game it's a zero sum game. A 5 will gain or lose the same number of strokes regardless of what categories you put them into. In this case, short game and putting.

I use the shotbyshot app to calculate strokes gained and I believe he explains it that if you use a normal putting stroke, barely off the green then count it as a putt.  If you are further off and deciding between chipping/pitching/putt and use a putter, that's a short game stroke.  Like @iacassaid in the next post, it's a zero sum with short game and putting but that's how i think about it.

Yes it was.  One thing I changed after that post was I am now using "0" for the handicap to get my SG vs Scratch.

    • Day 595 - 2026-05-19 Got some short game work in today during some lessons. Made a lot of putts too. Without trying. Golfer kept chuckling.
    • Day 15, May 19.  Today, after work (in stages), I hit two dozen practice balls at home.  Slow swings, focusing on the lifting of the arms as per my latest lesson.
    • Day 259 5-19 Slow work on arms getting more in front. Lots of pause at the top, then rehearsals, then swing.
    • Day 70 (19 May 26) - weekly 9 hole session with my good friend this morning, however the better session was this afternoon with my grandson.  He put in for nine holes of match style play (we did stroke count as well).  The rules - I had to play from my regular tees but with irons only (no metal woods or hybrids (nothing with head covers)) while he played from the most fwd tees with his full bag.  Was a fun match and watching his competitive juices flowing.  He won the match 1/0 holding the lead as we tied the ninth.  Stroke wise it was a messy nine for me and he beat me by one stroke - not bad for a 10yr old.  Best of all - it was a dream session come true.
    • My instructor before I found TheSandTrap talked about he felt his left side more in the golf swing. I am nearly all right side dominant. I am also almost 100% right eye dominant, to the point I have low stereoscopic eyesight because of that dominance.  With one of my pieces, a bit of left wrist flexion. That is much easier to feel if I focus on my left hand. For me, taking my right hand dominance out of it helps a bit.
