Tour Pro Enters Club Championship, Loses

And no, it wasn't Jeff Quinney, who I believe is due to get his amateur status back in 2021 (if he hasn't already -- my brief check was to confirm we discussed it on TST a few years ago).

The headline is a little click-bait like, but it isn't really all that wrong.  The pro in question is in the process of seeking to reinstate his amateur status, something that takes some time and dedication.  

This former Tour pro created a stir by entering his club championship, and then he lost | Golf News and Tour Information | Golf Digest

Interestingly, but probably only to me, the course where this took place, Blue Hill CC, is one of the very few golf courses outside of CA-OR-AZ that I've ever been to, and I remember it being a very nice looking course.

This actually doesn't surprise me.  In fact I would assume it happens a fair bit.  I base this opinion on the pro in question not knowing the intricacies of the course and playing it for the first or second time in his life.  Conversely, the members will play this course a couple of times a week and have intimate course knowledge.  It really does count for a lot when the player in question is a low handicapper and that course knowledge offers a couple of strokes.  Of course it also requires the pro to have a bit of a bad day, but that isn't uncommon when you watch any tournament with some pro's always having over par rounds

Shuman carried a +4.4 index and was beaten by someone with a +1.9 index.   So that's really not a big upset by the numbers.   His opponent shot 67, which is something that a lot of pros will lose to on a given day.

Just because you were a former touring pro doesn't mean that you automatically win a non-tour tournament.

67 will win a lot of tournaments regardless of the field if it’s played from the back tees.
