My son has a Callaway Epic Flash driver with a Tensei AV Blue 65 Stiff shaft that he can hit pretty decent with.  He had the opportunity to try (18 holes) a friend's Project X HZRDUS Smoke Black 6.0 62g shaft in his driver and he said he hit better (more fairways, same distance) with the Smoke Black than with his Tensei AV Blue.

What are the spec differences between these shafts?  Son said the Smoke Black is a little stiffer. Is that correct?

He wants to get a new shaft and I hate to spend money blindly without a fitting, but he has at least played with the shaft he thinks he wants.

What's a good price for the Smoke Black and what does it usually cost to have a Callaway adapter installed?

What other questions should I be asking?

FWIW son has about a 110 swing speed carries the ball about 270 with the Tensei based on Mevo data.

Every new shaft/club/club head what ever has a honeymoon period.

If he really thinks the shaft is better, he should get fitted. And/or at minimum get on a launch monitor. Compare them side by side on the same day.

I can hit 3/14 fairways today and hit 13/14 fairways tomorrow and be using the exact same club. Everyone is different from day to day. Hitting more fairways today than he "normally" does really doesn't mean anything other than he had a good day with the driver. Perhaps he would have had an EVEN BETTER day with his original shaft.

Do yourself a favor and have him professionally fit for a shaft. Or at minimum try them side by side on a launch monitor.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

The Tensei is a mid to mid-high launching shaft. The PX is a low launching shaft. I have the PX with the Epic Flash and Titleist TSi2 drivers. I really like it. At his swing speed, he may want to consider a 6.5 stiffness or a 70g shaft.

If you want to go the cheap route, check out eBay. Search for ‘Project X Hzrdus Smoke Black Callaway’. You will get hits for this shaft with a Callaway driver adapter tip. Measure your son’s driver shaft and look for one the same length. PX has generally 60 and 70g after market shaft weights. The 62g is an OEM weight meaning Callaway had one made specifically for them. It won’t be much different though.

Fittings can be helpful, but it is one point in time. The MEVO data can also tell you whether the Tensei gives him too much spin. The PX is most likely lower spin too. I personally would just pick up a Callaway PX shaft and test it out on course and with the MEVO. He can always re-sell it.

If he really likes the smoke black 6.0 I have one from the latest Titleist driver that I will sell.  I don’t plan on using it.  It has a Titleist tip on it so all you would do is go to a golf store and tell them to put a Callaway tip on it.  Short money for the adapter tip.

I sent you a PM. Let me know how much you are asking.

I don't know what he plans to do. Callaway Preowned is having a 40% off sale and he can get an Epic Speed driver in like new condition with the shaft he wants for something like $275 or so.  He is thinking of doing that instead of a new shaft for his Epic Flash.  Then he can either keep the old one as a backup or sell it to help pay for the new one.

Following up for no particular reason other than maybe to echo the comment to get fitted.  He ended up buying the like new Epic Speed from Callaway Preowned. However it was a lighter PX smoke black shaft than the one he borrowed from his friend.  He figured out how to hit it and based on Mevo (not plus) data he got a best of 292 carry and an average over 280. The fitter put a Tensei White in something heavier than his PX in his Epic Speed head and he got a best of 299 on a higher end FlightScope monitor with an average over 290 carry.  I realize it was a limited number of shots on a different launch monitor, but it seems like it is worth the cost to upgrade the shaft in his already "new" driver.  I assume he can sell his Epic Flash for at least the cost of the new shaft.
