Today, I walked into a sports authority. I recieved $100 in gift cards for my birthday last october, and I figured I would test some equipment out, maybe buy something I liked if they had a fitting area, etc.

They had a net in the corner and a sales guy there to help me. His name was Dan. Dan walked me through there 'wide' selection(Callaway, Taylormade, and Nike, as well as an assortment of off-brands...) and, made a complete fool out of himself. First, we looked at irons. He picked up an R7 draw and said that this was a great iron set that many tour pros actually use. R7 Draw Irons! Of the Super game improvement variety! what a tool. Second, we looked at drivers. He continued to make silly claims like this. Then, he did something that made me never want to go into the store again:

Me: I was looking at the Sumo 5900, and I noticed you also have some UST proforce shafts as well as the stock shafts. Do the ones pre-installed with the UST cost extra?

'Dan': Yeah, we just got them in. Same shaft Adam Scott uses(actually, I think this is true). No extra charge actaully, because we are trying to get rid of the woods with steel shafts in them .

Me: I thought the UST Proforce v2 was a graphite shaft(I actually know for a fact it is.)

'Dan': No, it isn't. See, Graphite shafts are laminated and feel plasticy. [The UST Proforce v2] is a steel shaft, Its just different colors, is all.

The moral of the story is: never buy anything from Sports Authority.

lol. thats a given. guys who work at large sports retailers are basically hight school drop outs and don't know much about what they sell.

I know for a fact that very few tour pros use clubs off the rack. Just about everything is prototype or adjusted specifically to their swing.

The only people i believe about advice on equipment are reps from the manufacturers themselves.

What did you expect?? A guy making $7 that prob. doesn't play....Sports Auth. is like Academy, you don't go in there expecting to learn something....that's a given.

I hope you educated him, in a nice way.....

All Academy is good for is golf balls and gloves. Larlev - Do you know a club fitter in Austin? I am looking for a REALLY good fitter. Someone who can measure me and make recs but that I can pay for the service and not feel like I need to order clubs through them.

Let me know. I work with a guy is a +1 or something and he is a memeber at Barton Creek. I will ask him who he would suggest too.

Not fully ; the sweatband I wear at the gym during cardio workouts is from Sports Authority.

But you're right. Get golf stuff from a golf shop. Great story, BTW.

I bought some softspikes and a golf hat there once.

I don't think that you can realistically expect to get good advice unless you go to a specialty shop that has some trained professionals. If you know what you want and can score it on clearance then you will make out.

Personally i dont get fitted..I never saw the reason to...I usually just pick something up off the shelf and and make adjustments with my swing...i honestly think getting fitted is overrated because back in the old days those guys ,(like trevino said) used to do the same thing--

"People think the size of the head is most important. Wrong. It's getting a quality shaft. test different shafts to see which goes the straightest. Also, more degrees of loft on the head is better than less. Eleven degrees is about right."

I actually have never bought a new club so I have never had to get a fitting. Though I do have the connections to a local country club to be fitted by a PGA Pro. I will never buy a club for a Sports Store EVER!!! They are bad and know nothing, at least at the store I went to. I had been fit for a G2 Ping putter but I found my current gamer and dropped the order.

I am serious..I can hit my friends drivers the same way as mine..fitting doesnt matter to me because i choke up and down on the grip with different clubs..to me getting fitted isnt necessary because i am more of a "feel" player..

Okay, r7, I've had enough. The minimal amount of comedy you supply (in laughing AT you) is simply not worth the mis-information, bad information, and simply unfounded, useless information with which you routinely litter this forum. I'm resetting your reputation to 0 but placing you in the penalty box.

I'll try to remember to let you out in a few days, but frankly, it's Masters week, so...

    • Day 206 3-11 Focused on wider backswing and reconnecting arm in downswing. Wasn't really happy with how swing was looking today. Wider backswing is very different for me. Went back to do a some longer pauses at the top. Hit a few foam balls.
    • This is an awesome breakdown. most of the bigger tournaments usually have one wave with the advantage, Thank you for the breakdown. If it is soft then it will be a lower final score
    • Over the past 15 years, the winning score has ranged from -10 to -20. Mostly around -13.  Here is Thursday and Friday weather. Saturday and Sunday weather. I think the course will play soft. Plenty of sky cover, lots of rain on Thursday. Fairways and greens will probably stay soft throughout the week.  In terms of tee times, I think Thursday morning and Friday afternoon have the biggest advantage. • We have a very difficult but mostly showy course this week. Lets see what they got. This course offers so many chances to get into trouble it is really a mental minefield. I am excited to see who can handle it and who cant. Last year we got a foreshadowing of JJ and Rory, I am excited for this year Who do people have winning? what will the winning score be? I am thinking 12 or 13 under
