I have been playing Ping G25 blue dot irons. My contact mark is about half a golf ball off center towards the hosel. I purchased a used set of Ping G irons in black dot. Anyone have experience with these two irons? Will I have a better experience with the Ping G irons? Both have a 37” 7 iron, plus the Soft Regular graphite shafts.

Good grief CharlieB! Welcome to TST. So the Blue Dot is 1* upright. I’m assuming you weren’t fitted for these? Sure it’s possible that the blue dot G25s are too upright for your swing. This could cause a heel favored strike. Being that the G irons are black, maybe that will help. But with such small changes we may have to consider the ‘ Indian not the arrow’ yeah?

Yes, I’ve played both those iron sets as well as many other Ping irons. No one can really tell you if one is the better between the G and G25…except a good fitting session! Cheers!

My ball flight is straight, but short with the G25’s. I thought the black dot would give me better ball impact position on the face? The G’s were delivered today, but there not as advertised, so they will probably be going back.

Have you done the sharpie marker on the ball experiment? Mark a black line on a golf ball. Set the ball with the mark straight up and down facing your club face and in the middle. When you hit the ball you’ll get a mark on your club face ( removable) that will show you where you’re making contact. Honesty, getting a fitting is actually quite valuable.

Welcome to the forum, Charlie.

I'll be the one to say it. The truth is it won't matter.

Both sets are fine clubs. The G425's are 0.5 degrees stronger lofted, so perhaps you may get a couple more yards out of them. But it's going to take a lot of shots and a lot of careful data collecting to pick up that small difference. Especially if you are looking for the difference on the course. You may see it in a hitting bay with a launch monitor, but it won't be a big number.

Black dot vs Blue dot is 1 degree different. BUT .... The G425's and the G's are also 1 degree different. So, in a sense you've got pretty much the same club there.

Take a look at this chart. If your height and the distance from your wrist to the floor numbers put you into the blue or the black, you are probably fine with either.

Don't get bogged down in the minutia. Play which ever set you like more, or which ever gives you more confidence.

As @Vinsk mentioned the "sharpie trick" ... I much prefer the "dry-erase marker trick", but that's for another thread... can let you know if you are way off or not. Otherwise get with a pro you trust and work on your swing. In lieu of that, I'd suggest starting a "MySwing" thread here in the forum and you can get some good advice there.

Good luck and let us know which set you end up liking better.

At the risk of triggering some members, I will share some data on the purported playability of each set of irons. First the G25:

And the G irons:

Looks like they are very close in design. So the Black being regular lie, it might help. If you notice the notch on Ping heads, this is to make it easier to bend/adjust for lie:

You can take your set to a club fitter and they can fit you for the proper lie.

No, it won't.

Sorry. I don't mean to be blunt. But it won't.

The OP said his G425's are blue dot, which means 1 degree upright.

The G's are black dot which means regular lie.

The G's come approximately 1 degree more upright through out the set than the G425's.  Therefore if you buy blue dot in G425's and black dot in G's, you get basically the same lie angle.

I have G25 irons not the G425. When looking at the two side by side they are very different. The G25 blue dot is .75* upright, the standard length is 36.75, however mine are plus .25” which makes them 37” in length. The G25 is much more clunky looking compared to the G. The cavity back on the G is much deeper than the G25. The G have a longer blade surface, but a lower toe height. The G irons have a polished finish while the G25 have a matte finish. The G also has the ‘Core Eye’ weighting in the cavity which started in G and continued in the G400 and G410. The G irons I have were manufactured in March 2017, so they are 4 years newer than the G25. I am still on the fence if I’m going to keep them, or return them.

What is that colloquialism about blind squirrels and nuts?

I thought it was monkeys, typewriters and Shakespeare!

I think the OP needs to hit, let’s say 7 iron, side by side and see for themselves whether the clubs are really different. There really shouldn’t be much difference if the shaft is the same.

Agreed. I also think the OP should really consider the dry erase marker trick. That would give some good information.
Of course, ideally the OP should go see his swing coach. As another colloquialism goes: It's the archer not the arrow.

Well, I didn’t even bother hitting them. I had been looking at the irons everyday and not being happy with the condition, so I just boxed them up and shipped them back. Lesson learned, don’t buy irons without seeing, or hitting them first. I really think it is “The Archer”.

Thanks for the replies. What is the dry erase marker trick?

Essentially you draw a line with marker on the ball and keep it in the middle vertical when you hit.  You will then get a mark on your club which shows you the position and angle of your hit.

Here's a link for you.

This thread is from 7 years ago. But the information is the same. Once again, I like dry erase markers, but a sharpie works. You'll have to scrub your club face a little harder afterwards if you go with Sharpie. Good luck. Keep us posted how it comes out.
