Hey Guys,

i play ping irons that are .5 inch over standard.  Is it as critical to do my driver, 3, and 5 wood as well?  They are steel shafted and standard length of that matters at all.

One has to ask what is the standard length for metal woods? Drivers used to be 43.5" Now they are 45 or 46. I would say play them as the are. No need to make an already long club even longer. Most people, pros included, play them shorter, not longer. I play my driver at 44.5".  My irons are 1/4" over standard.

And here lies why you don’t do your driver in accordance with your irons..  you just read that Starmam is 1/4” longer on irons but plays driver at 44.5”.  I’m actually measured to play my irons 1/4” shorter.  I play my driver at 46”.

I don’t think the 1/2 over on irons correlates to woods or driver. I have also checked lengths when looking for new clubs and 1/2 longer may not be the same from brand to brand.

Your driver is steel shafted?!  Do share the rest of the story.

It is not critical nor necessary.

From my experience in fitting, you do not extend the driver 1/2" if you were fitted for irons that are 1/2" longer.

I could see someone, if they are much taller, might like a longer driver just so they don't feel like they have to bend over as much.

Most drivers are 45" right now, and it isn't uncommon to see 45.5" drivers.

It isn't a rule that you have to. It might just be something you try out and see if you like.
