The Oscars could be canceled and it would be missed for about a week.

It wouldn't take that long for me.
I will say this is the most interesting thing that I can remember ever happening at the Oscars. Truthfully, I probably wouldn't have known the Oscars even happened if not for this incident.

This. Do you see the problem here. It’s ridiculous. WS assaulted another person on stage. Period. What if a total nobody ran to the stage and slapped Rock. Would nothing had been done? Of course not. The Academy clearly showed the privilege that exists amongst the elite.

I hope we are not talking past each other. I do see a/the problem. They are not going to treat everyone on equal footing. I get it. I am not defending them at all.

But I also see the difference between a total nobody and a nominee who is/was their headliner of the evening.

The Oscars had 15.4M viewers this year. That's not an insignificant number.

Tiger's 2019 Masters win peaked at 18 million viewers.

Oh, I'm not mocking the Oscars. I just normally never hear about it. I never think about it. But I'm hearing about this.

My point is that there are probably a lot of folks like me who don't follow the Oscars. Just like there are a lot of folks who don't follow The Masters, or Wimbledon, or what ever. When something like this happens. It goes outside the bounds of the fans and even the fringe fans. Non-fans are now talking about it. Forming opinions, etc... I've heard tons of people talking about this incident. More so than I ever hear talking about the Oscars itself.

So, two schools of thought:

1 - Any press is good press.

or

2 - People like me who normally don't follow it, only hear about it when an ugly incident occurs.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

FWIW, it would be misdemeanor battery at most. Uncalled for yes, but we’re not talking a felony here.

I love the Oscars.

Have been watching it religiously for over 35 years since I have had access to TV. I learn about a lot of movies - foreign, independent, lot of actors that I would not know about. The wife and I usually embark on a 2-3 month spree post Oscars seeking out particularly interesting nominees/winners and watching them.

I have as genuine interest in them as anyone who loves movies as entertainment and art and I am genuinely mad at Will S. No one would classify me as rich or elite.

Chet, I know you know this, but you're one person. Just because you never think about soccer, maybe, doesn't change the fact that it's a huge deal around the world.

No shit.

This goes back to this: "The Oscars could be canceled and it would be missed for about a week." Which you said "it wouldn't take that long for me." So, bluntly:

  • The original take is wrong. It would be missed by millions.
  • Your "support" of the additional take is not only further in the wrong, it includes only one person's perspective.

IANAL (unlike your wife), but I'm pretty sure it's assault and battery.

I think I've heard it as "assault is the threat, battery is the act" or something.

"This is definitely assault and battery."

Battery is the contact, yes. But if this happened outside of this venue, it would still be minor. It was a slap, not a punch and he walked away. If you did this to me and I pressed charges, I think the police would talk me out of it and just ask you to apologize. Because it happened on National television, it’s become a bigger event. If Smith slapped Rock at the after party, it would still be wrong, but much less of a spectacle.

Let's stick to the current topic, please. This isn't a gateway to talk about barely related racial topics.

Opening clip for next years Oscar’s!

When Chris Rock came on stage for last night's event in Boston he should've worn a football helmet.  Now that would've been funny...

Lol. Ok so my thoughts: ‘ Mr. Smith I’m sorry but you’re gonna have to leave based on your actions. We can’t condone your language and your slapping of Mr. Rock. I’m sure you understand.’

‘If you refuse to leave I’m afraid we will have no choice but to ban you from the next Oscars and perhaps indefinitely.’ If you agree to leave we will leave discuss what actions may or may not be needed for the future. You have caused a great disruption to this production and humiliated Mr. Rock.’

’You’re a reasonable person and surely you understand our position.’

More closely related to the topic at hand since it's another comment that Rock made. I'm definitely NOT on team Rock

What does this have to do with WS slapping CR?

And Will Smith would have replied F/U... and I'm not leaving until I pick up my hardware.

    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
