I just got a new B.O.A.T.

BEST SHOT:  So, the only thing I had working all day was my DRIVER.  So, when I arrive at the twelfth tee box, I'm feeling pretty confident...  However, I've lost a few balls (sliced drives) to the lateral water hazard.  No worries, I've been nailing it.  Then standing on the tee, I decide to go straight at it (shortcut).  To be successful, however, I don't just need a good drive... I need my BEST drive... and I GET IT. B-)

Best shot of the day.  Anxiously holding my breath until I saw it bounce on the far fairway...  I practically skipped out of the tee box. :-$

70 even par. Oh, and speaking of BOATS how did this shot not go in? Par 3, 142 yards easy 7i.

Lay a straight edge down and it crosses the hole.

There was a slight left to right slope, the ball had a hunk of mud on it, and the shot had a draw to it. I think it rolled left of the pin and then back down and around the hole.

I can see that.  Lucky and unlucky on the same shot.  #GolfIsHard :-$

Best Of All Time? +14/86.

The 18th hole had been a nemesis most of the year. I'd been hitting my driver well all day so I went with grip it and rip it. Alas it didn't turn out so well. I hit my tee shot off the heel and watched it only tumble 134 yds just off the fairway to what looked like under a tree in a bad spot. Turned out not so bad. The shot that saved the round? The approach shot on the 18th. It was a bit breezy. I was 180 yds out. My 7W was normally 190. I had a sidehill lie in the rough just off the fairway but the ball was sitting up in the grass like it was on a low tee. Great lie. I decided to play a stinger out to the right over the bunker where it should naturally draw back onto the green. I made good contact, the ball took off low into the breeze heading straight for the bunker, and then at the last second curved over it and landed on the green bounced once and stopped. I waved to the fans as I approached the green. 😆 34 feet from the hole. I can't complain. At my HC I'm lucky to hit the green from that distance. Lagged to to 2 feet and tapped in for par.

I shot a (+5) 76 at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames, Iowa two times in July of 2008 from the Blue Tees. That's my personal best both in terms of score vs par and in terms of low score.

Coldwater Golf Links is a public golf course and driving range in Ames Iowa. We host golf outings, provide lessons, and 18 holes of links-style golf.

BTW - I also made my first hole in one on Coldwater Golf Links hole number 5 on July 2, 2008. 185 yard, 6-iron.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
