I live in Hershey PA and my understanding is that Hershey [Hershey Country Club]  has one of the better courses in PA.  I don't play there because I'm not near good enough.  I think it's also around 90 bucks to play during prime tee times.

Most observers around here say Cowboys Golf Club is the best public course in the area....it's neighbor is just as good however and at least $120 cheaper.

Having played Cowboys I'd agree it's not the best or even close for that matter. Paying for the name and the inclusive food drinks makes it a nice day for sure. As far as price, it's way too far up there for just the course, I'd much rather play Tangleridge at 1/3 the price. I've not yet played Grapevine, but everyone I've met who has played both says Grapevine is nicer.

My fave metro Denver courses probably aren't the most popular in the area but who knows. I spend more time at Hyland Hills and The Ranch CC than any of the others. The one I absolutely abhor in the area is Colorado National. Suckiest greens I've ever had the displeasure of putting on.

I'll narrow it down to a < 30 minute drive and say Willow Metropark or Lake Erie Metropark for me. Those courses are beautiful, well maintained, and challenging but do-able.

The nicest course I have been to is the Golden Fox at Fox Hills, but that's a Father's day or Easter course... it's pretty expensive.

Right there are 16 absolutely amazing courses. If I had to choose right now, the Mountain course at LQ Resort would be my choice. There is a stretch of 4 holes back up against the mountain that is absolutely beautiful! I did play the Jack Tournament course at PGA West for the first time the other day, and it too was great. Beyond the ones I named there, there are other great course around here that fall maybe just a bit short of those (Terra Lago, Heritage Palms, Indian Springs, Golf Club at La Quinta, Indian Canyons, Cimmaron Golf Resort, etc.)

That's just a few, I know that there are many more I'm not thinking of.

And that's just in the Coachella Valley (Palm Springs area)... as far as best in the state, obviously we have Pebble Beach, Torrey Pines, Riviera, Olympic, etc.

In Florida, I think the consensus is that Seminole in North Palm Beach and TPC Sawgrass are the best. Seminole usually ranks in the Top 10 Nationwide. There are tons of other really good courses, including a very high concentration of them in the Naples area in Southwest Florida.

I have to agree with this 2008 post for Seminole. It's an incredible slice of heaven on the Atlantic.

In New Mexico we have a growing number of great golf courses, and not a one of them with cost you anywhere near $100! Here are some of the best in order of my preference.

Paako Ridge Golf Club

Very nice golf course in the Sandia Mountains is in the top 100 you can play. They have 27 holes, but the original 18 are by far the best. In fact the last 9 is really a bummer when they make you play it instead of the other 18. You can get on during the week for less than $50

Sandia Golf Club

Right outside Albuquerque, it is a perfectly maintained golf course because it is owned by the Indian Casino. You can play it during the week for $50

Twin Warriors Golf Club

This course has hosted the PGA Professionals National Championship on two occasions. It is a really good course but is the most expensive around.

Black Mesa Golf Club

Pretty cool golf course except they have way too many blind shots and I think its too hard for the average duffer IMHO. The blind tee shots all have a pole to aim at to show the way, except if you hit the ball more than 280 you find those poles don't work and you end up through the dogleg and out in the desert! It is a little expensive for where it is located.

Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe

This is a muni and is pretty stinking cheap. Its not always in perfect shape but its a great layout. It has a nine hole par 3 course along with it that is really cool.
