Maybe not the most popular travel destination for golfers, but some really great courses here. Recently played Kinloch - amazing course and unbelievably well kept. Played with a caddie which was great.  Also like the Federal Club and Country Club of Virginia. Independence is pretty good too.

I’ve played the Federal Club and also Royal New Kent. I don’t think the latter is all that close to Richmond, though.

@GolfLug and @DaveP043 can help you more here. Plus @woodzie264. And others.

I thought it was close? Didn’t we stay in Richmond when we played there?

RNK is fine, but it’s definitely on the played it once, that’s enough list for me.

I would add Spring Creek in Gordonsville, Birdwood in Charlottesville and Golden Horseshoe and Kingsmill in Williamsburg as must plays. Not exactly Richmond but within an hour.

Royal New Kent in Providence Forge (about 45 mins from Richmond)  too of course, and I personally love it but calling it a bit quirky would be an understatement. @iacasand @billchaocan attest..😊

Viniterra, Mattaponi Springs and Potomac Shores are all within a earshot  of Richmond are all big boy courses.

@Lem Clevenger do you live around Richmond? I live in the Virginia Beach.

From reputation, Kinloch would be considered to be one of the best in Virginia, arguably the best. But as you as aware, Kinloch and CCV are both private and I’ve not played either.

If single, I’d apply for membership at Kinloch where I have a buddy who is a member there, but given the $60k+ initiation fee with no pool, gym, clubhouse for kids and wife to use, it’s not in the cards. Another private club I’d consider is Willow Oaks, less expensive and very nice.

CCV is markedly more expensive, but nowhere near as nice as Kinloch from what I’ve been told. Again, not played there so I can’t speak to it.

With regards to courses open to the public:

  • the Federal Club is nice (only a few mins from my house)
  • I really like Devil’s Knob atop Wintergreen
  • Although a shorter course, I love Old Trail in Crozet, hitting off their Zoysia is like playing off carpet.  Love it.
  • As @GolfLug mentioned, Golden Horseshoe is nice and has history.
  • Spring Creek is nice, but too difficult for me. Not fun for someone of my ability. Fairways feel 20yds wide with rough 4” deep. of course the last time I played there was prob 10 years ago and I’d prob handle it better nowadays.

    • You should be able to install it yourself, honestly. You could easily blow it on and use some one-sided duct tape or something so it stays in place. That's what I've done with one of my grips.

    • Hi all, My Edel putter seems to have developed a rattle.  I don't think it's a big deal, as I mostly hear it when I'm tapping down ball marks on greens.  However, I am debating getting it fixed, especially as I intend to play a lot of golf in August and September, and to continue playing regularly after that of course too.  My issue is I think fixing it would entail the fixer (golf shop repair station?) removing the grip and, presumably, applying a new one.  My problem is two-fold.   First, I like the grip on it, although after eleven years, maybe it's worth replacing.   The bigger (second) issue is getting the grip.  I don't like the flat-fronted putter grips anymore.  I have the round one on my putter, and I suppose I could buy one from Edel's website, but would a golf shop install a grip I bought elsewhere and brought in?  Or could they order one if Edel is not a supplier of theirs?  I don't recall ever seeing any Edel products in a Roger Dunn or PGA Superstore, although the era when I would go to a store and browse has long since ended (for better or worse).  I'd also wonder what the timetable is, as I'm leaving for a seven week trip in under three weeks. Any suggestions on what to do would be very welcome, whether about the rattle or the grip, together or independently.  Thank you!
    • I'm glad to know that picking up grass and letting it go doesn't help.  It felt like it shouldn't, but I'm glad to hear there's a good reason why.  It makes sense that wind is different higher up than it is near the surface. For a while, I was in the habit of checking the prevailing wind direction before playing.  That helped if I wasn't sure.  However, I still am not really sure whether something is a 5% wind or a 10% wind (and, of course, I know that a "helping" wind helps about half as much as the same wind hurting).   One of these days, I'll learn how to figure out what to do differently if the prevailing wind is 10mph vs 20 mph.
