Woods are made of metal and irons have not been made of iron for a very long time. Is it time for a change, or is it that golf values tradition?

It's just what they're called.

What would you call woods? "Oh, this is my 3-Carbon-Titanium-Steel-Aluminum-Composite-Resin-Amalgamation"?

I never like it when announcers call clubs "metals." I am old and thoroughly used to hearing clubs called woods and irons. Toss in wedges, hybrids and putters and I think we are done. Inevitably, there will be some in favor of using "Composites" or "Alloys". We did eventually move away from cleeks, spoons and mashies. Maybe I am just holding on to irrelevant tradition. Sigh.

I still use the "hit it on the screws" from time to time.

And yet on they have no problem calling every wooden club a persimmon even though they’re not all made of persimmon.

As @iacas said, it’s just what the clubs are called.

No, I agree it isn't an irrelevant tradition. We will see how it goes in the future. I would stick with woods and irons. Irons are an interesting example though, having kept their name even though these clubs haven't been made of iron for at least a century.

    • Something just popped into my head, based on your mention of the folks who "know the rules" but are generally wrong.  Another comment I read was "the Rules ALWAYS said.....".  When I come across those I often go to  www.ruleshistory.com to see if the rules ever said that.  You can find every (almost?) version of the rules since the first set in 1744.  Its fun to return to the conversation and say "You're a little bit right, the rules said that at one time, but that changed in 1984.  You've been playing under the wrong rule for 40 years!"
    • Hi, checking back in to see if any St. Louis area golfers get together for a round or three during the year.  I have recently dropped my membership in a local league this year to work on my game and meet other people.  I would love to hear from anyone that would be interested in meeting for a round in the St. Louis area.   Rick
