my most recent ss averaged over 12 shots was 145mph - trying to kill it

therefore 85% would be 123mph.

I have started this thread just to ask what people mean by swinging at 85%.

For me when i swing at what i feel is 85% doesnt happen.

when i feel as if i am really backing of a driver i 135ish mph. If i swing at 123mph i mishit.

tour pros talk about this a lot also, again i think it is just the sensation of leaving a little in reserve - they cannot suddenly crank out an extra 18mph of clubhead speed compared to normal, or to put it another way an extra 45yards.

therefore i am suggesting that swinging at 85% doesnt happen, although it is often talked about.

so do you actually swing at 85%??

I guess they mean they don't take a full shoulder and hip turn as far as they can when they would crush it.

I mean, when I swing all out, you can tell. Usually one of these and a little grunt. When I swing easily "at 85%" it's smooth sailing.

i try to crank it and sometime's it's a good result in a 300 yd drive...and sometimes it's like 270 out but a 30 yard spray....into thick rough.. i honestly think when they say swing at 85% it means don't swing as hard as you can..i had a hard time slowing it down..but it really does work...

Swinging at 80% for me is just letting go and letting my body uncoil naturally. I dont phyically try to swing slower. Thats a fat shot waiting to happen.

Its tough to put a number on this. The last swing thought in the world I would want would be "swing 85%". The 85% comes from the fact that swinging the golf club as hard as you can will not produce the best results. This is especially true with the scoring clubs.

This "85%" is best achieved through working with your tempo and swinging the club firmly but in control. If you are consciously trying to swing at 85% your gonna have a lot of trouble.

It doesn't matter how hard you swing the club if you can't deliver the club face square at impact which is a lot easier for me if I'm not swinging too hard.

Maybe the launch monitor was reading kilometers per hour and not mph like in the op... 145 kph = ~90 mph... Does the UK use metric?

your threads are really getting old. they're all basically bragging threads with different twists thrown in to make it seem like you're asking different questions. If your claims weren't so out there, like 145 mph, they'd be more believable, Your screen name, signature, and threads all scream arrogance, and I don't beleive any of it for a second.

i think the key isn't swinging at 85% as much as it is slowing down your backswing.

1, 2 backswing, 3 DOWNSWING.

sorry, but i asked a question as this is an often chucked about expression and as such it is worthy of questioning on a golf forum.

my numbers are there as i had them measured, when the question is asking about your thoughts on a % it is fairly useful to illustrate the question with real world numbers.

i am genuinely really interested in thoughtful comment on my original post as opposed to people just having swipes.

you can either choose to believe the numbers or not, that is up to you - just bear in mind that i was using a vector (previously i did ask if people thought they measured too high).

my point is that i do not believe that anyone actually takes 15% off when they swing its just a sensation.

as far as all my posts being about power - i post on and comment about things i am interested in and know a bit about, you will notice that when i post i answer the original question.

all numbers i use are accurate and in mph and i dont swing at 145mph on the course but i can swing at 145mph when giving it 100%

k

    • Although the base rules don't make this really clear, the Player must have decided to use Unplayable Ball relief before lifting the ball.  This exact situation is discussed in the Committee Procedures section of the Rules, section 6C(8).  Section 6C addresses how to rule when a Player proceeds under a Rule that does not apply.  Note that 9.4 applies, 9.4 deals with a player moving his ball when no rule allows it.   Rule 9.4 penalizes the Player for lifting his ball when not permitted by the Rules, and requires him to replace it.  Since he dropped and played from a different place, the Wrong Place penalty applies.  As for a serious breach, that would only apply if the Wrong Place gave him a really significant advantage.  Since he could have taken Unplayable Ball relief in essentially the same spot, for just 1 penalty stroke, the Wrong Place penalty of 2 strokes is enough "punishment", there's no need to consider a DQ.
