Went to work this A.M. and in about two hours, I looked like a question mark!! Lying flat on my back with a heating pad and an ice pack. So much for my round on Wednesday!! I was just getting to where I could see some improvement in my game too. Oh well. At least I've got the Golf Channel.

My back goes out once a year... to many years lifting heavy crap in the building business.

I found a physical therapist that was just awesome! The one thing that helps my back more then anything else is plain old walking. He would put me on a tread mill walking for about 40 minutes, after the first 15 or 20 I could feel everything loosen up. I finally purchased one for my home and also bought a push cart to start walking the course. I feel your pain, hope it clears up soon.

Wow...sorry to hear about the back. I had the same problem about a year ago--couldn't walk for about a week. Couldn't play comfortably for about a month. I really hope your recovery is quick! -LBB

I feel your pain. I got out of my car yesterday morning and felt a twinge in my back. "Oh, no, not at 24," I thought. Turns out my back felt better a few minutes later, but man, I had the scare. I can only imagine what the real thing feels like. My condolences.

I feel your pain too, best advice my chiro gave me was laying flat on a floor with my feet up in a chair with rear end touching the chair so your legs are at 90 degree angles. That and as kregan said "plain old walking", several short walks a day, and try not to sit or stand for more than 10-15 mins at a time(real hard to do if you have a desk job). Ice 15 mins every couple of hours, and ibuprofen helps take the edge off a little too. Mom was an R.N., can't you tell??

Patience my friend, you will be playing again in no time...

Thanks for the love guys. I'm better today. Still crooked as a politician but less pain. Should be ok by next week.

Dont know if mine is the same as yours but if i putt to much, i get a blockage in my back - cant really move, hard to breath and so on. Go to my doc, he pushes on the correct part on the back and i can go back straight to the golf course.

I was having some middle back ache from golfing, went to the chiropractor last week... i think I overdid it today, on my 30th hole of the day I hit an absolutely booming drive and there was a loud pop, and my middle back basically gave up on me completely. Thanks for the advice on lying on the floor with feet up, I've got some ibuprofin in me and a heating pad. I think I have to lay off golf for a week or two and let things knit up.

I think my swing is what does it, I don't initiate the swing with my hips, but from my back.

Man that sucks!

My biggest fear is that one time somehow at the gym when lifting weights on a certain machine that i may injure myself like a bad muscle strain or something. Thought playing hockey i get banged up bad i bruised 3 ribs and rotater cuff in my shoulder earlier this year. Went to physio a few times, to get rid of the pain it hurt to breathe. Couldn't imagine having that when wanting to golf

Machines will hurt you in the long run.

Treating results and symptoms instead of treating causes?

Tips on back problems: -fix your swing, Ben Hogan never had back problems -Strengthen your back by lifting weights, not machines . Machines hurt you in the long run and even if they don't they are useless for golf . Lift barbells and dumbbells. -Keep good posture. Shoulder blades back and down, chest up. Head back. Feet flat on the floor while sitting. -Dynamic stretches for hips, hamstring, and glutes -Finally, most important... if you want a healthy back, STOP STRETCHING IT . Here's why: your lower back is made for stability, not mobility. It is meant to be kept straight at all points in your life, sleeping, running, jumping, and golfing. Bending it forward and rounding it hurts it. Hyper extending it hurts it. Stretching your lower back is as stupid as stretching your knees or elbows. These body parts are made for stability. General rule for treating pain in the "stable" parts of the body (knees, elbows, lower back): stretch the muscles above and below it. Stretch the hip and hamstrings, and the upper back. If your hips are tight, your lower back will compensate by becoming mobile, something it wasn't designed to do. This is why the people with bad backs are always sitting down all day... Sitting down shortens your hip flexors. Long and boring post... but very important for a good golf swing and healthy life. If you want more help I can give you some links for good strength workouts and dynamic stretches (is linking to other websites allowed?)

Thanks guys,

After getting some rest with my heating pad I feel 100% better today, though I'm going to hold off on playing golf for a few more days. Interesting facts and advice, too. Thanks!

Do you think chiropractors are better than getting massages? I've been to a chiropracter for about 2-3 months, and I don't feel any better. He wasn't the type of guy that gets in deep & pops & cracks things around ... more like holding my arms up & pressing them down to put some tapping machine on my back for a few seconds, then doing some type of electronic stimulation on my back & neck.

I am looking into getting regular massages rather than chiro.

When I'm not playing golf (in the winter), my back is fine. So I don't appear to have a chronic problem but more soreness. In the non-winter seasons, I try to golf 5-6 times a week so my back is constantly sore & tight.

I know someone who has had chronic back problems. He started to use inversion therapy and the back issues have been controlled ever since. He swears by it. Hang upside down for like a half hour a day or something like that.

I feel your pain. This a.m. I simply turned around in my kitchen and I felt this grab in my back. Laid on the floor for a while. Took some Advil. Stretched. Did some strange rubbing of my back against the corner of our granite countertops. By afternoon I was hitting balls (and striking them well). Back is still a little sore in this one spot on the left side but doesn't inhibit my swing. I'll make my tee time tomorrow. I'm blessed (and lucky).

I second that regarding walking! I hurt my back many times and when I start walking it helps so much it incredible. Listen to your body and see your doctor but staying active is better than laying in bed for your back in my experience.
