Lately I've had a few fried eggs and burried lies in bunkers, and each time they killed me. I basically try to make a harder steeper swing, but still can't hit a good shot. Does anyone have any advice on the best way to play these shots. My last few trys were so bad I may as well have taken an unplayable.

Make sure you have a full follow-through. If you just whump the club into the sand nothing will happen.

Your goal when you have a fried egg it not to get it close, but, just on the green. With a wide opne club face and stance, set up to the shot. Don't look at the ball, look at the back edge of the crater. Swing as hard as you can at and through that crater. Again, you aren't trying to stick this close, your main goal is simply to get it out.

This may not be the right way to do it, but I always close down the face of my wedge and hit down hard. I dont want the bounce to come in and skim just under the sand I want it to dig under the ball. Make sure you follow through... if you dont concentrate on that part you'll (or at least I) have a tendency to decelerate through the sand and that ball is going nowhere if you do that.

Like I say, thats not so much advice as just relating what works for me... Im really not good enough to be giving advice to anyone :)

I saw Dave Pelz demonstrate this shot after Vijay made a great up and down during his loss earlier, last month.

His set up was left of the target and he opened up the club face. He also came across and through the ball. He explained that this type of lie had a tendency to cause the ball to go right, thus the alignment.

For this shot I would imagine you would need a lot of strength and club head speed to open the club face and control the ball, IMO closing the club face and swinging down steeper would be the more sensible option for higher handicaps, the impact at the sand will automatically open the club face causing the ball too 'pop' out of the bunker.

Don't swing as hard as you can when the lie is buried. Just keep a steep swing like a V and put it a little bit in the back of your stance. Make sure you land it a good 30 feet in front of the pin because it will roll big time. Good luck

I'm with JB on this one.

Actually, your current approach is not far off. When you get an 'egg", you are supposed to do the following:

- Put the majority of your weight on you left foot
- close the club face just like a regular shot
- Strike directly down on the ball - not behind
- hit it very firm - but don't kill it - accuracy is the key

This is one of the most difficult shots in golf. Just getting it out of the bunker somewhere near the green is an accomplishment.

If you are getting a bunch of these, you might be getting too aggressive and going for every flag. An egg usually happens with highly lofted shots descending almost vertically. If this is happening with a 5 iron on down (towards the wood/hybrids), you may consider safer options.

You can't float the club head when it is a fried egg. You have to dig it out. Pelz explains this in his Short Game Bible. I keep the face perpendicular and swing at the start of the crater.

These are tough shots, but they do need to be played differently. Keep face in standard position (not open), weight on the front foot. Raise the club, and strike down on the ball (try to knock it deeper into the trap) - and hit it hard.

To be clear, you don't hit the ball - you still hit the sand behind the ball.

And you're not a +12.

When it's really deep you may have better results by pointing the toe slightly in (because the sand will tend to open the face). Hit an inch or so behind the ball. You just want to move a bunch of sand (and with it the ball). Expect the ball to roll out after landing, because it will have little if any spin on it.

And pcitygolfer, like iacas said... you're really a MINUS -12. Tiger is a +9, so I feel pretty confident of this. Unlike with golf scores (where minuses are better), negative handicaps are where most of us live.

You think hitting a fried egg out of a bunker is tough?
It's been raining so much in Missouri lately that I had a fried egg in the FAIRWAY Saturday! Now tell me how to hit that one! The ball was litteraly barely poking out above the grass line.

I dug my ball out and placed it an inch or so lateral from the impact crater my ball created. I'm not about to tear all the tendons in my right forearm for a silly golf shot.

too much talk about opening the face up here..that is not the correct way to play this shot. You need to hood the face ie turn the toe in and then hit hard behind the ball..usually aim for about 1 inch. Its sounds like completely the opposite thing that you should do but it does work well.

I've always done the closed clubface thing and hit aggressively at the back of the crater...and it is worked very well for me reletively speaking. The ball usually comes out, but rolls a bunch of course due to low traj and no spin.
