I was wondering if there is any particular way to clean clubs correctly. Right now, I have a set of Mizuno MP30's and I'm not sure exactly how to clean them good without damaging or having them rust. Any specific do's and don't's?

Thanks!

I use warm water, dish soap and a nylon brush (not one with metal bristles). Seems to work pretty well. Just be sure to dry them thoroughly afterward.

There's a new machine at the range - you put you club heads (and/or grips) into a pool of water and the machine sends electromagnetic waves through the water which vibrate the molecules attached to your club (dirt) and hey presto they are clean :)

Though there isn't a better feeling than spending half an hour with a basin of soapy water and a scubbing brush on your clubs

Only advice I can think of is make sure you dry them thoroughly - that's where rust can set in. Especially if you have a cavity or something where water/dirt can hide. Oh and take a scrubbing brush out at the grips - scrub really hard (and get the soap out if you use some) - you'd be surprised how much dirt gets in there (sweat, acid rain etc )

I use a hard tooth brush with warm soapy water, usually after every round. I also try to make an effort to sharpen my scoring clubs grooves with a small tool I picked up from TGW for 10 bucks.

If you wipe them down after each shot, they don't get all that dirty to begin with. I also use a brass brush on the face, as it gets the grooves nice and clean. No worries about damaging the club, as brass is much softer than chrome plated steel. Periodically, I fill the kitchen sink with warm, soapy water and give the sticks a good bath, drying completely.

I bypassed the special brush and use an old toothbrush. Saved $10 bucks. Works just fine.

Key is not to dunk the head of a cavity backed club into water. Get the toothbrush wet and scrub the head. Wipe with a damp towel. Wipe dry completely.

I always wipe my clubs off after each shot or session on the range, but once every two to three weeks I wash them in warm soapy water. One thing I always make sure to do is cover the hole at the bottom of the grip to prevent water from getting inside the shaft. I usually just cover the hole with my finger as I run water over the grips to rinse them off.

brilliant LOL! have some rep points.

Those steel brushes are a marvel - the get at the grooves easily. They do more than an old toothbrush. Great to have attached to the bag. I used to use steel wool on my old irons (and wedges - to remove some of the rust) but I wouldn't use it now - it ruins the dull finish my irons have.

I clean my irons as best I can after every shot but they still need cleaning at home - especially the cavities and grips. Can't wait till clean them haha

Your welcome! And second the thanks for such knowledgeable replies. That is the reason why I joined this forum. Thanks a bunch.

Now to my next question. Is there anything special you can do with forged clubs. I got a deal on my used of Mizunos, which are forged. Anything special I need to do?

i actually don''t mind playing in the rain, course opens up and no wait and one of the extra benefits is the clubs get cleaned

I know this is old but had a question for you all regarding the cleaning of your irons.

When i clean my irons they never seem to be as nice as when a person at the course cleans them. Is there anything special they use that anyone knows of?

The last time I had a course guy clean my clubs they returned them spot less and all I saw him using was a white towel.

Thanks

I hang a towel around my umbrella handle that is wet on one end and dry on the other. After each shot, I wipe and dry the club before putting it back. I do this quickly and unobtrusively to avoid disturbing playing partners or slowing play. This reduces the amount of time I have to put to dedicated cleaning, although like some others I kind of like cleaning my clubs. When cleaning I use a toothbrush and warm water and be sure to dry thoroughly. Occasionally, I use a Mothers Mag and aluminum polish on plated or stainless surfaces and Kit carnauba wax on painted surfaces.

    • Eh... what's he going to say? "Hey, I bought a new driver. It's 10 yards shorter and I hit twice as many OB now." Does he have any data to back up his claim? Or is he just going by what he saw at his fitting?  I've been using either Shotscope or Arccos since 2018 and if there's one thing I've learned is that it's the archer not the arrow. When I'm hitting the driver well, it goes far and straight. When I'm a mess, it's a mess.  If you were properly fit for a driver in the last (dare I say 10 years) 5 years for sure. I'd be surprised if you can get more than a couple of yards out of it by getting a new one. The COR rule has been 0.83 since 1998, with widespread and standardized enforcement since 2003. Obviously, the engineers can still optimize spin and launch and shaft flex and/or kick point. So there are things that can be done. But I believe the days of 10 or 15 yard gains are over... unless your current driver is unfit for you. (as @Typhoon92 mentions above.) If you were fit for your epic. You will likely see very little on course performance difference.  Having said that, I get a new driver every 2 or 3 years... Why? Because I like shiny things. So, if you want a new driver, get a new driver.
    • My suggestion to you is to take your driver with you and go to a golf store where you can hit the new Ping 440 AND your own driver side by side.  They you can decide.  Very simple test you can do for free. You have no idea ( and your friend probably doesn’t either) how old his old driver was, what loft it was compared to the new one, what shaft and flex he had in his old driver vs. the new one.
    • I might be inclined to try to figure out what is bothering them. Is it that their index is 12 but they're only getting 10 strokes? If that's the case then I think I would just point out that their handicap is being adjusted for the difference between par and the course rating. It's adjusting for this course being easier than typical for the par. Course rating being roughly what a scratch should shoot on a good day and par being the sum of the numbers on the card. The whole concoction (which Erik and Dave explained already) is simply a way to get everyone to play on an even playing field. So if everyone plays to their handicap, then they'll all have the same net score. The adjustments are there mainly for those instances where something more complicated is happening like playing different sets of tees, but still apply otherwise. It's also easiest to say "your handicap index is 12.4, which means you should shoot 10 over par to play to your handicap" rather than "your handicap index is 12.4, which means you should shoot 12.4 over the course rating after adjusting for the slope", which is a whole lot of gobbledygook to people who don't know how the system works.
