Over-rated or under-achievers?

Adam, Sergio, Badds - all under achieving based on where they have come from pre PGA Tour.

The worst two are Poulter - over-rated and over-exposed, Donald - over-rated and over-exposed (what's he doing on a FedEx Cup ad?).

Is it the disappointment that no-one has really pushed Tiger in majors (aside from Rocco and Bob May) in recent years? Make lots of cash, have a great life, accept the annual $million + for a few top 10's and live it large and easy. Tiger never having won a major from behind shows a fallibility - and not having lost from in front shows "acceptance" from the other 70+ ties going into the weekend.

Who really is finding their swing in the dirt looking for the form to get to the top - or is the target now #2? That then makes all of them over-rated - if not complacent.....

I think Tiger is over-hyped. I agree he is the greatest of his generation and may one day be the greatest ever, but he's still over-hyped. Tiger this, Tiger that, 24 hours a day in the golf world, 23 hours a day everywhere else.

And you'd better be thankful for it. Who else is there to really promote our game and capture the imagination of the non golfing public?

There are a lot of players who would never have considered golf if it were not for Woods.

Phil Mickelson definitely

No way! He won two tournaments this year. The only other guys who won two or more are Tiger, Kenny Perry, Anthony Kim, and Paddy. A pretty good list.

Re: Colin Montgomerie being overrated....

In the Ryder Cup he is undefeated in eight singles matches and his record of seven points from singles after six wins and two halves, equals the Ryder Cup record, as does his tally of six wins.

In total he has played in eight matches, 36 games and won 23.5 points, including holeing the winning put at Oakland Hills in 2004.

Yeah, totally overrated!

Yeah, totally overrated!

People don't give a rat's behind about Ryder Cup records. Quick: name Jack's. Arnold's. Tiger's. Majors and wins are what matter.

He won all of his tournaments against weaker competition on the European Tour. Not a single PGA Tour win to his credit, nor a major.

Which is why I feel Montgomerie should be a non-story. He may very well have been over-rated years ago, but not now, if only because he is a non factor. Actually, I find it interesting he was ever considered rated to begin with. His domination of lesser competitive European tournaments coupled with never winning on this side makes it an easy choice for me not to consider him.

Possibly. I reserve that distinction for Jay Haas, Scott Hoch, or Gil Morgan -- or maybe even Bruce Crampton and Doug Sanders (although longer than 20 yrs. ago). I don't think they are on anyone's over-rated lists.

Which people don't give a rat's behind? Not Europeans, I can tell you that. He is revered here for his Ryder Cup record, achieved under the most excruciating pressure. He is a great team player.

While no-one would argue with the fact that the PGA Tour is the stronger, the European Tour was packed with stars of the Faldo, Woosnam, Lyle, Langer, Olazabal variety when Monty was dominating it. No mean feat, and inaccurate to charactarise it as weak.He didn't play the PGA tour much at all, perhaps unsurprisingly given the behaviour of US crowds towards him. Perhaps the slightly sneering attitude towards the European Tour is one of the reasons the US team get it handed out to them in the Ryder Cup so often.

He is a great team player.

In an individual sport.

European Tour was packed with stars of the Faldo, Woosnam, Lyle, Langer, Olazabal variety when Monty was dominating it.

They were playing over here in the states quite a bit. Monty's world ranking was never even really that great because he didn't play against strong fields.

No mean feat, and inaccurate to charactarise it as weak.

I called it

weaker , which it is.
Perhaps the slightly sneering attitude towards the European Tour is one of the reasons the US team get it handed out to them in the Ryder Cup so often.

And what's it really matter, in the end? Go on, without checking, name Nicklaus' Ryder Cup record. Now name the number of majors he won, and guess at the number of PGA Tour wins he has...

The point remains: who really cares about the Ryder Cup on an individual level? Not the vast majority of golf fans. European Tour Orders of Merit? Same category - big whoop.

In an individual sport.

Not the vast majority of golf fans? That's called doing people's thinking for them. Monty is a European golfer who hardly played on the PGA Tour - duh, no surprise he has no wins!

To say the Ryder Cup doesn't matter is laughable, and to back that up by asking about the Ryder Cup records of players who are amazing individuals is senseless. Golf is NOT just an individual sport. Mostly it is, but not always. Also, the US Tour is strong. But you are looking at it from a US perspective. Asking how many US Tour wins a European player has comes across as a bizarre question from this side of the Atlantic. Sure, it has the most money. Some players go over to try and make their fortune, and adapt to target golf. But if it is that hugely superior, why do the "unknown" Europeans stuff the Americans in the Ryder Cup? Do you think you might be guilty of underrating the European Tour? Anyway, back to Monty. Almost every article written about him for a while was along the lines of "Will he ever win a major?". He came 2nd a ridiculous amount of times but never quite got it done. The coverage he received reflected this and his achievements elsewhere. The fact that US golf fans don't like him doesn't mean he is overrated. Don't confuse the two.

I don't think Sergio Garcia can be listed as 'overrated'.

I think Padraig Harrington is overrated. He wins a couple majors and now all of the sudden everything thinks he is the next big thing? Give me a break...

Yeah -it's a joke. I mean, he wins 3 majors in 2 years and suddenly there's all this talk.

It was the same with Nicklaus, Watson, and Woods. I mean, there's no way that a European could be that good, especially as he doesn't even play on the PGA tour full time. I am hoping that you have made an attempt at irony, but I fear that you are serious.

    • Definitely not a favorite… For some reason my wife and I started watching Cobra Kai. I know the original was pretty cheesy, but the inability of these people to get over shit that happened like 30 years ago is astounding. And these kids would be arrested, but they don’t even seem to get suspended from school. Would Danny not notice that Johnny’s son looks like Johnny? Etc.? Why would a completely different dojo that has the same name be “banned”? Oy. Not sure we’ll make it to season 2.
