This is about my 3rd attempt on playing and the last time I tried I just quiet taking a driver I would use my 3 wood on my drives. I could stay much straighter. I think my big problem is I just need to learn how to properly swing a club. What I was thinking is since I can hit my 3 wood well which is 15 degrees is find me a 3 plus or 3 strong which ever they are called (13 degree 3 wood) and use it as my driver. I will say I have not used one of the newer drivers that has the 460cc head. Thanks for the advice.

I just bought a new 3 wood, and took it to the range last night.

I actually hit it farther and straighter than my driver, so my driver will be taking a seat on the bench for a while.

I hate my driver - Since I just got new irons today, I will wait a week or so before venturing out on the market for a driver. Though the driver is definatly the worst club for me in my bag. I use it as little as possible some times optining to use a hybrid or 3 wood instead.

I dont carry a driver. The longest club in my bag is a 3-wood. I find that Im more likely to keep it in the fairway with a 3-wood and while I do sacrafice some distance with a 3-wood, Id much rathar have a longer 2nd shot from the fairway than to be hitting a shorter 2nd shot out of the rough.

I rarely use my driver, i have a callaway 3+ and absolutley love it have had it for about 8 years, its just a confidence thing, i only get about 20m more with my driver so only use it on long holes with wide fairways...

When i played today my driver was the best club in my damn bag. It's a really old wilson graphite flex(which i swing a little bit too fast for). So i tone it back and hit it nice and soft let the club do the work and get a nice little fade in there everytime for some nice tee shots.

Payne Stewart won the U.S. Open in '99 and didnt carry a driver. He made up for it with a great short game.

The first thing I did when I started playing was get a new driver, I sliced the h#$$ out of it. A couple people told me to back off it and hit the 3 wood or some irons until my handicap got below 24 or so.

I didn't listen for a while, didn't see any improvement then finally realized that maybe other people were right and (gasp!) I was wrong. I dropped the driver, and still hit a bit of a slice, but it was definately more controlled.

After a few lessons and a lot more playing I started to hit the ball somewhat straight. I added the driver back and I have kept improving and now I love hitting it.

Now that said, I think if you had the same problem I had (a big slice) then I would drop down to a 3W or even smaller fairway wood until you start get it a bit more under control. The higher loft and shorter shaft will reduce the sidespin produced and get you some better drives. Also for slower swing speeds the higher loft might actually get you some more distance.

If you have a pretty straight ball flight, but have trouble making contact, I would go with the big driver as it would be easier to get the club on it.

I usually tee off with my 3 hybrid (19 degree) and I can hit it about 220 with a 20 yard carry but the most important part is that it's straight and dependable. I read somewhere the average male mid handicapper only drives it about 190 so I'm happy. I did just buy a Nickent 3dx square driver since it's pretty easy to hit, hope to gain some yardage.

In high school, the only driver I had was an 8.5 degree regular flex Taylor Made bubble and I couldn't hit it, so I hit a 3 wood.

When I started playing again this summer, I had bought an 11.5 degree R7 425 w/ a stiff shaft and I'm bombing it.

For me it was obviously the equipment that was giving me the trouble...

Tomorrow I will be carrying my 21* hybrid, my 5 wood and an old driver that has no company name on it. The head is the same size as my 3 wood and it is only an inch or two longer. It is, technically, a driver.

I am hoping to be able to play it off the deck as I have a long par 5 to contend with.

I am so excited to go golfing.

That is exactly how I started, too.

The game can be frustrating as all heck but stick with it. Get a few lessons and get a swing worked out....things will begin fall into place, like tumblers on a lock....eventually the door opens and you're playing presentable golf. Don't be afraid to hit 3 iron of par 4s and 5s tees either. The two things that really helped me boost confidence when I started playing were learning to chip and knowing that I could keep it in the fairway and chew off about 180-200 yards off the tee with my 3 iron. The driver can be a lot to swallow at first. Long shaft.....low loft.....scary.

At my current level of play, I have found more consistency with the 3 wood off of the tee. I can hit it straight and it keeps me out of trouble.

The only time I used the driver, for example, yesterday, I sliced the heck out of it on the first tee. It stayed in the bag for the rest of the day.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
