I play with a Dunlop "chipping wedge," which is basically a 7-iron mated to a putter. It has an offset hosel, a head that looks like a putter, but it has grooves and a 7-iron's loft. It then has a sight line grooved into the top of it like a putter.

I guess it's built for chipping around the green, but I can hit it from 110 in with a full swing. I can basically do anything within 110 with it except stop/spin it back or come out of fluffy sand.

I paid $19 for that thing at a Wal-Mart about 15 years ago and it's saved my bacon more times than I can remember.

I also have a Taylor Made original Raylor (19 degree) with a titanium shaft that I got at a second-hand sports outlet. Even though I'm a bad golfer, I can hit that club better than most in my bag -- which is odd given that the rap on the Raylors was always that mid/high-handicappers couldn't play them.

My dad carried a hickory-shafted putter right up until he died. I think it was an Otey Chrisman. Sadly, it got misplaced somewhere and we no longer have it.

No odd clubs in the bag....just the standard stuff. I routinely do "odd" things with them, though not planned.

That is too bad about your father's putter. Sure would have been nice to keep around.

None of the clubs in my bag are "odd" so much as they are "old" or perhaps "terrible."

It's going slow because Christmas is only a few months away (and golf equipment are the perfect gift from relatives who ask "So, what do you want for christmas?"), but by 2009 I should have all the Dunlop straight out of my bag. After taking 43 strokes off my score in July with them there, that'll be a little "odd."

I threw my clubs into the lake so it's time to start over...

If I get in trouble off the tee I'll use a 22* Wedgewood hybrid (the only hybrid i carry); good for low punch shots about 150-175 yards. It looks kind of weird but it works to get me back on the fairway.

I had the hardest time getting a NIKE CPR 26* wood out of my bag. It was great out of the rough, and absolutely awesome as a fringe/putter chipper. But it was butt ugly and had such a large footprint you couldn't hit it off of the slightest downhill lie. The shaft was so whippy, the harder I hit a full shot, the shorter it went due to ballooning. I finally learned how to control the distance on my Cobra 4 hybrid when chipping with it. But many times I've been shortsided in a tight fringe about 10 or 12 paces from the pin and think "I wish I had my CPR here". It was one of the few hybrids with a shaft only a tad longer than the iron it replaced (38.5 vs 38).

I put lead shot into the shaft on my 60 lob wedge to get a heavier feel and slower swing speed. I have two putters that " have leaded also "

Can't believe I forgot to mention this -- and in MY OWN POST, at that.

I have a Golfsmith 11-wood, 13-wood and 15-wood. The 15-wood has about 40 degrees of loft on it. They act a bit like hybrids. I don't carry the 15 very often but I always bag the 11 and 13.

I have only had it a couple of days, and it's not that strange, but I get a double take when people see that I have a 4 wood. I guess that they are not all that common, and most people use a 3 wood.

My Dad has a left handed wedge is his bag.

My dad did that for awhile. Carried a left-handed 5-iron because he was in the trees so much and would often be faced with a lie he couldn't handle right-handed (i.e., ball up against a tree). I've also heard of a lot of people doing everything right-handed until they get to the green, then shifting to left-handed to putt. Does your dad hit full shots with that wedge or is it something he uses for his chipping game?

I suspect you may have found the magic of titainium shafts. I have a set of Ping Nickle irons with Ti shafts I loved for years. Finally had to give them up for softer shaft - I turn 70 in a few weeks. Now playing soft-stepped Raptures. Great club but not the feel of Ti

    • Day 27 (7 Dec 25) - Got in a few swings with 9i and hard foam balls in backyard.  Setup weight fwd (rebuilt left foot really lets me feel the weight in a slightly painful way) - kept the backswing to around 9 o’clock focusing on contact and resulting divot pattern.  Like how the hard foam balls come off the face (almost like real balls in sound).  A good abbreviated session as I only able to hit about a dozen balls in the fading light.
    • Day 117 12-7 A bit of chipping practice today. Full swing- hit some real balls to see where Im at.
    • Not the part I was replying to: Handicaps did not go down much (like 0.14 on average IIRC?) when we went from 10/20*0.96 to 8/20. And a good chunk of that was from the +s.
    • I think he meant in the UK. The old system was completely different from the new one. 10/20 x 0.96 vs 8/20 would really only impact very low handicaps I think. The 0.96 serves to increase differentials for plus differentials, where 8/20 vs 10/20 works to lower differentials for all. I don't know many plus golfers who would be upset that their index got lower. A lot of really good players don't even really keep their handicaps up-to-date. They're much more interested in their WAGR rankings which get them entries to certain events.
    • Day 433 - 2025-12-07 Got some work in after Junior Elite before a night of sports (and the return of my wife!). Backswing work. Similar to what a lot of my juniors are doing.
