Perhaps you are delofting one of the clubs? Do you drive down through your shot or keep your body from moving forward in your downswing?

I've posted this in four threads here today, maybe it can help you? Read my post here: http://thesandtrap.com/forum/showpos...6&postcount;=17

It would also be useful with some more information. Is this on the course or primarily on the range? The range balls are no good compared to a ball you play with on the course, it can be especially devastating to the length of your longest irons.

I tend to have some of the same problems, but my problems only surface from the 6 iron on down. I seem to hit a 7 iron comparable length to my 5 iron. I am a very, very good player (scratch, won tournaments, etc), but I am ALWAYS trying to figure out why I can hit a driver 280-300, but cannot hit a 6 iron 175 yards?? Any help or suggestions?

Thanks for the quick reply guys...as to whether its on the course or on the range..its both...I get a really high trajectory and always land really short....I have read the thread and will try the tips...any further information would be truly appreciated.

How do you hit those clubs off a tee compared to off the ground?

SHORT and right usually!!! I am a natural fader of the golf ball. Have an over the top move, but I am athletic enough and skilled enough to get away with it! I am able to draw a driver, 3-wood, and hybrids----all only when I need to, but cannot for the life of me draw any iron no matter what. My misses with a 5-6 iron are soft floaters that go right! Feels like a get too steep on these shots and seems like my tempo is too quick with these clubs. From 7 iron-wedges I am a very good and accurate player, but the 4-5-6 is where I get bad (in my opinion)---I wonder if it is just a mental thing?

With irons the usual reason people lose distance as the length increases is the uplofting effect of the early release from an over the top move is enhanced with each longer iron.

This sounds too like a fitting issue in terms of iron shaft weight, length and flex.

Since they are going high and right wouldn't that imply an open clubface?

You may wanna change your web name then.........

Just kidding....it could be that you are playing too stiff a shaft for your swing speed.....there should be a nice gap between the two. It may be different for everyone. For me it's twenty yards....could be much more or less for others.

I'm going to echo Zeph's comments from the other thread he linked. I had the same problem with my 5 and 7. Saturday at the range I started imagining the ball was a few inches in front of its actual location, thereby requiring me to swing down at the "real" ball, trying to almost hit in front of it. At least it makes it seem that way to me mentally. Immediately started putting 10-15yds between those two clubs. Good luck.

ease up on the grip of your 7 iron. a guy on the golf team at my school does the exact same thing.

Also it may be that you are easing up on the swing speed on the clubs. Mentally you might be trying to slow down the SS without knowing it to ensure you have perfect contact, that might be it. This might also lead to the shaft fitting issues.

I have a problem with my 9I and my PW. With perfect contact my PW is around 145-150y, while perfect contact for my 9I is 150y.

Also I ahve a question about hitting the 3 and 4 irons. I can not hit them for the life of me. They are about 20y or more shorter than my 5 iron. what tips do you guys have for improving them.

Are you possibly trying to pick the balls off the turf with those irons rather than hitting down on them like you do the higher loft irons? Somehow you must be adding loft with those clubs.

Check ball positioning. The shorter irons should be played further back in your stance. As you move down to 7,8 and 9 irons, the ball should be lined up further back as you go. This also will allow for more solid contact on the higher lofted clubs. Also, maybe see about getting some impact tape which will show you where you are making contact with the ball on the club face. You want to make sure that you're not hitting too low on the club with the higher lofted clubs.

After a shank, I can throw my 6 iron like a javolin,... but my other irons flutter like a wounded duck,... is it just the confidence I have in tossing that club like Bruce Jenner that allows me to do it everytime,... ? or maybe since I know I'm not hurling the other clubs well that I'm just not committed to the throw,...

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
    • I managed to knock off a 3, a 13, and a 15 a couple of weeks ago. The 3 was a 185 yard par 3 with a 6 iron to 12 feet. 13 was a 350 yard par 4, which was a 2 iron and a 9 iron to about a foot. 15 was a 560 yard par 5 with a driver in a bunker, 4 iron into the semi, gap wedge to 8 feet and a putt.
