why blades?

i would like to know why you guys out there that play blades do i say why not take the forgivness of a cavity back or even a half cavity like the mx 25 forged irons?

I don't play blades, and for that matter, neither do a majority of professionals. However, there are good reasons for playing blades:

* Swing-improvement. The blade is not going to hide a swing fault the way a full cavity can. * Feel - I am told that blades offer superior feel on a good shot, and great feedback on a bad shot. I have experienced this with my cut-muscle MP-57s, and I can only imagine how much better it is with blades. * Ego - blades have the reputation of being the club for the top-notch player. I would be lying if I said that ego didn't play into my decision to get players' irons instead of game improvement irons.

i mean like play them as in a game i would use baldes as a training aid but the ego one is silly since 70 percent of tour uses cavity back claims a ping rep

isn't the answer kinda ovbious? i mean the mojority of golfers that play blades shouldn't, and the only reason they do is so they can try and look macho stepping up to the first tee, with blade irons.

But if they step up to the tee with a blade and when they hit their shot you hear a big ugly THWACK wit the ball going ten yards its not really a thing that makes people look good IMHO.

The good reasons for blades are 1. better ballstriking 2. more workability 3. look good 4. feel great Bad reasons 1. terrible forgiveness(I had a lot of experience with this when i first got my blades) 2. well the first thing says it all Over all most amateurs shouldnt play blades for score but this is coming from a 10 handicap who plays them . Its all a matter of preference.

Quite frankly...because I want to. And I truly couldn't care less about what the person next to me thinks. Nor do I care what he or she plays. It's golf--an individual game/sport where a person can/should decide for him/herself. Sorry to sound like an ass, but too many people concern themselves way too much with what someone else chooses to do. If it's not hurting you, personally, then live and let play! --LBB

for most courses the first tee requires something more than an iron(driver, hybrid, etc.). so no one would necesarily need to see their first iron shot.

• Feel - When stuck well, nothing quite feels like a blade. On the flip side, when struck poorly, nothing let's you know about it quite like a blade (which, if you ask me, is a good thing).
• Workability - Sure you can make the ball do a lot with a quality CB, but the options that you have with a quality blade are nothing sort of phenomenal (if you're game is up to the task that is).
• Size - I simply can not get over how BIG irons are these days. I'm not just talking about the SGI or GI irons either, there are a number of "players" CB's that have just gotten astronomical in size. I like the small, traditional size of most blades. I feel that a smaller iron gives me a lot more options, especially from out of the thick rough.
• Consistency - Shot to shot, I find blades are generally more consistent. The behavior of the ball is more predictable, especially when trying to work the ball.
• Trajectory - Design differences club to club, shaft to shaft, etc make major differences here but in most cases, I find that a quality blade will have a lower, more penetrating, trajectory than the majority of CB's (all other things being equal). This gives me more options during my shaft selection since I can concentrate on more than just trying to get the ball flight down.
• Looks - The majority of blades look fantastic. Nice clean top lines and a traditional look do a lot to inspire confidence when you're standing over the ball.
• Ego - There are some who stick w/blades to prove that they're man enough to play with them. Although I personally disagree with this philosophy, there are a quite a few who don't.
• Preference - This is my biggest reason right here. In the end, I bag blades because I want to. Options are abundant these days and there are a lot of quality choices out there. At the end of the day however, I've either got a set of Titleist ZM's or 695MB's in my bag.

I couldnt agree with you more i mean the size some clubs make it look like you could barely pick the thing up muchless hit it LOL

Nah, man...that rant was not directed at you in any way. You ask a valid question. It's just that some choose to presume to know what's best for everyone else. No one (to include hacks like me) needs to fear blades or worry about what others might think of their playing them. I personally love the look and feel. Even though I once felt more secure with my Pro Combo set, I've increased my confidence ten-fold by switching to the Mizzys. All the best. --LBB

I've agreed with everying LBB has said in this thread. Look at me: I just picked up the game, and I'm gonna' be hitting muscle back blades from '91! Why? First, because I want to, but more importantly, my equipment was all hand-me-down. I'm not going to be investing a ton of money into this game until I really, really begin to enjoy it, and I think it becomes necessary to have it.

I love my mp33 and I am thinking about buying my son a set of Mizuno mx 25 that I will later play after I can't hit my blades. The blades feel great and I am playing my best golf now, I also agree and admit that they look great in my bag and I like to show them off.

The blades force me to concentrate on my swing and I have made many swing changes while playing these club and have settle on one that I am now hitting the ball solid and consistently.

I love the feedback the clubs give me, I can tell if I hit my long irons one groove too high on the face or if the contact is not solid. I can work the ball and have more control with the blades. I recently hit a punch 8 iron with a 30 yard draw around a tree branch on the green and made the birdie putt.

I played mp30 iron with rifle 5.5 shafts that felt too heavy for me so I bought the mp33 on ebay for $250 plus shipping 2 years ago, feeling that I could afford to buy them without worrying too much about not being able to hit them. When I first went out to the driving range I was impressed with how easy they were too hit and more important how well balance the clubs felt and much lighter than the mp30 with rifle shafts. I gave my mp30's to my brother-in-law and have been playing the blades ever since.

I feel the blades make your a better golfer by forcing you too swing properly and focus on the basis fundamental golf swing. I shot 3 under and two 1 under rounds with these clubs and again changed my swing recently and playing my best golf.

I love these clubs and recommend you at least try hitting blades once to experience what they are all about someday.

For me it is nothing but look. If I don't like the look of what I'm hitting, I'm not going to hit it well the majority of the time.

I used to hit my Nike Forged Pro Combos really well, but instead of re-shafting them I got a set of GIs (Cobra FPs) on the advice of a friend who went from Ping S57s to Adams A3 combos because he just didn't have time to practice all the time anymore. I couldn't hit'm because I could never get comfortable looking at the offset or get used to the wide sole. So here I am back with smaller "player" irons with my 735s (though I'm strongly considering getting those old combos re-shafted soon).

My problems are in my swing, I know that. You just gotta play with what you're comfortable with.

I sorta think the majority of players who play blades (high handicappers who want to play Tiger clubs aside) Are people who just grew up playing them, which I can understand. If your used to looking down at a particular shape it may mentally throw you off to put a different shape under your nose.

Two quotes come to mind that might help explain why many of us continue to hit blades while the rest of the world seems to have gone in a different direction.

Pilots say about an airplane - if it looks right, it flies right. Blades look right.

Someone (I wish I knew who. If you know, please let me know.) said about a well struck shot hit with a forged blade - the feeling travels from the club face, up the shaft, and into your soul. For me, it's true.

Do what you wish but as for me, I'll hit blades as long as I am able.

Personally I can't hit a club consistently if I don't like the look of it at address. I hit my mp-32's far better and more consistent than my old callaway x-12's and my titleist 704 cb's. I know an mp-32 isn't a "true" blade, but it's the closest thing you'll find in left handed. Besides, it looks damn near identical at address.
